>color grading and/or editing
makes it sound like only did the basics with it.

There's only one serious option for mid-high level (but not movie-scale) video editing, and it's after effects.

Ironically, for movies the requirements on the video editor is much lower, because they will usually use some at least semi-custom path-traced special effects, and a lot of practical effects. They also have infinite compute and infinite editor man-hours.

I'm not happy about it, I'd like a alternative, but it's something people rarely understand because when people think video editing they mean the trivial basics like cutting clips and color grading. Real video editing means lights, particle systems, scripting the relations between layers... At least 10 layers and 12 hours of work for a 10 second clip

>>
>>109450850
Shotcut is better for colour grading, it's got 10 bit linear GPU accelerated pipeline, kdenlive is stuck on 10 bit CPU only, and so runs like ass for 1080p native, I got by on it using 480p preview, it has few 10 bit effects, it's basically 8 bit CPU only. But in terms of everything else, kdenlive is better and easier by far.

>>
>>109450972
Hey anon, I would recommend kdenlive for that, as you won't just yet benefit from the 10 bit linear pipeline of Shotcut. Kdenlive is a few updates away (bout half a year) from getting GPU acceleration and 10 bit support for the rest of the effects. If get bad fps in preview, lower the preview res, or use proxy files. Kdenlive uses OpenTimelineIO, so once Shotcut supports this, you could interchange between the two. I have a high quality svt AV1 render preset for kdenlive I can send.

it's a bit barebone right now but for a beta I'm really digging where it's going. smooth workflow and performances. only grip right now is i can't seem to find a way to change interpolation type for keyframes and encoding is limited to h264/aac right now. I could see it becoming the affinity photo of video editing with it's relatively cheap one time personal license.

Then there's Blender for cartoons and videos with CGI elements:

And there's really solid video editing software for those of us who don't work in the film industry too (100% of this board), such as:
Shotcut
Kdenlive
OpenShot

Basically, OP and his thread are retarded.

One thing Adobe did that we can't seem to replicate is the seamless integration between the entire suite. It wouldn't be enough to just make a Photoshop or Premier Pro alternative, we need a project spanning everything for professional creators.
Last time I was on Windows a friend asked me to help him touch some stuff up for a niche magazine. So I made use of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. It was very nice that not only the interface was similar for all three, but I could import the raw Photoshop file into InDesign and it would be updated as I make edits to the original Photoshop image.
To actually attempt to compete with Adobe means competing with their entire suite. It take the same amount of effort as creating a desktop environment from scratch.
One thing I think is slept on is leveraging GEGL (GIMP's engine). GIMP doesn't do it justice.

It is a great software. Good for effects (with fusion) and leading colour correction. Apparently fewer crashes than adobe.
Also good just for cutting.
Also much cheaper than adobe.

Fusion does need some optimisation and more cool stuff though. So much potential.

I can recall dickin' about with 3D rendering on my Atari ST... We're talking 11Mhz o CPU and 512KB (that's not a typo) of RAM here. Set that rendering when I go bed, it might have finshed a frame by time I'm back from skewl, shit.

I neglect the name of the package, I keep thinking "Lightwave 3D" but know it wasn't that 'cause I always wanted n couldn't affords.

But the point in mention is there was a demo file, had two little spinged articulated desk lamps. And a demo animation wherin a pair knock a ball between, the little one jumps on it and balances knocks it over to the larger one that attempts to imitate and flattens it.

See that in much higher resolution in movie intro's now. If them folks wasn't involved in the fabrication o that software, I wager they used it.

It's funny how difficult it is to find a list of Hollywood films that are actually edited in Resolve. All of the lists insist on lumping grading and finishing in the list.
Because that's what Resolve is. Color and finishing, with a shitty NLE tacked on.
The overwhelming majority of Hollywood is Avid. Distant second is Premiere. Resolve isn't even a blip for professional editing.
