One other thing if you're into sonic purity - in general many old DACs were also ADCs, you could feed in a signal and it would convert it and create a digital bitstream. It's common in old parts from the '80s and into the '90s and beyond. It's how your Windows codec has both ADCs and DACs, it doesn't have separate ones, it's all handled by double-ended devices.So if you really wanted to be accurate you'd figure out which ADC a digitally mastered album was created on and feed in the digital bitstream and use it hopefully, as a DAC, which is possible on many old units.

R2R Dacs have a different sound than Sigma Delta DACS. 99% of DACs on the market are Sigma Delta, thats why people think they all sound the same. But no, they sound completely different.Sigma Delta = Oversamples the digital audio into a fast 1-bit or low-bit stream, then uses noise shaping to push digital errors into silent ultrasonic frequencies.R2R = Uses a fixed grid of matched resistors to turn digital bits directly into an analog voltage level step-by-step.Sigma delta is cheaper to make and measures better (SINAD etc), but R2R sounds better. It's like comparing CD to vinyl.

That is another problem and ringing can "fool" sampling algorithms resulting in vastly degraded performance. Never do anything with a digital audio file or bitstream, if you can help it. Everything you could possible do is bad or could be bad, is likely to hurt the signal. Just pass it to your DAC at its native bit depth and sample rate and make sure your DAC can handle it properly without resampling, or even ideally, oversampling. One of the most musical players I have is my Philips CD-100, the original first CD player. It has a 14-bit DAC and despite this, and the no-oversampling mod I did, it is one of the most musical players you could possibly hope for. They go for nutty money now too, the mechanism is all brass and steel and uses magnetic levitation so there is no wear and all the moving parts hover in space.

By constantly interpolating things, working in floating point, then down-converting (DACs don't do float directly!) etc. is bad. If you need EQ just do it in analog at the preamp, most preamps have bass and treble adjust and they might even have a defeat circuit so it can be cut out of the signal path with relays.
