I fell down a rabbit hole of Resident Evil games videos recently. >inb4 games reee go to /v/Bear with me. Things like lore, cut content, etc and started seeing shit about how developers managed to take Resident Evil 2 from the Playstation 1, a 1.4GB game spanning 2 discs, and managed to shrink it down to fit on an N64 64MB cartridge. This included all bonus content, bonus content exclusive to the N64 version of the game, bonus modes, cheat codes, cutscenes, the entire sound track, and all 4 stories of the game (2 per character). This was all done without making the game look like complete garbage and without down sampling the audio until it sounded like shit. Without going into the details, the devlopers had to pull some wizardry level shit, including getting the blessing of Nintendo themselves to have access to their micro-code for the console to get the game to run and fit properly. I use all this as an example. When did developers (games, programs, etc) stop optimizing for their hardware? It's extremely rare these days to see programs that aren't bloated masses of shit. The average PC these days in most households has more processing power than ever but it seems we've heavily back slid when it comes to how programs are made. Is it laziness? Lack of understanding of new hardware? Closed environments where the hardware manufacturers refuse to work with the developers? Maybe even choice of what language is used? You would think with all the focus on energy efficiency, heat generation, and so on, people would WANT to make their programs run as efficiently as possible. What would need to be done in order to make proper code optimization mainstream? Where would you start? Pic unrelated

Every update is another 75GB+. Warzone is a perfect example of this. What could they possibly be adding to warrant such an inflated file size? It's insane. Again, this is just games but programs aren't too far behind in regards to bloat. It's not always file size, but how the program runs as well. Mobile applications are the biggest offenders. I just don't think it should be considered rocket science anymore to achieve SOME level of optimization, especially with the ease of access and capabilities of AI models like Claude or similar. Although I do agree that those absolute arcane masters who once upon a time coded works of art are long since gone. Either retired or dead, their energy returned back to the aether.

Thing is, if the base game already has all the maps, weapons, animations, skins, etc that make it 120GB+, what could an update contain to warranty 50GB+ at at time. They obviously didn't set out to make a 64 MB game, or else the PS1 version wouldn't have been so much larger, would it? They had to spend time and wizardry (together read: money) to optimize it the way they did. But they HAD to in order to access N64 sales, and they figured it was worth it.Consider a developer today. If they make a game that is 50 GB and sells, why do more? If it takes them six months to get it down to 20 GB without meaningfully compromising quality, how many consumers will that substantially benefit? Most gamers aren't feeling cramped by that 30 GB that could be saved. Alternatively, they could spend those six months on patches, expansions / DLC, or even just the next game the studio has in mind. All of which are likely to bring in more revenue than shaving 30 GB.
meagre resource situations breed creativity - look at ultimate and latterly rare on the spectrum, SNES, then N64. Absolutely mastery of the hardware making their games shine unlike any other could. Every design choice had to be intentional. Now there is no resource constraint - no need to be intentional in design, no need to innovate or excel to succeed.
