I did one tech event at a brewery for Boston Tech Week and was annoyed this seemed to be what it was for. Not a big deal if it's a general social hour, but it was pitched as a presentation on a subject I wanted to hear about. By the time they started the presentation, they clearly had no real interest in it and just wanted to get back to drinking.
My local events are the same, but they're at least pitched as a social event and not a presentation on a specific topic. Only complaint was I was the only person who worked in tech. Near everyone else was unemployed or in an unrelated industry looking for generic business networking.

I've been to more expensive conferences than this and really its great for networking, talking to vendors and seeing if they have a job available, collecting socks/t-shirts, sneaking into vendor customer appreciation drinking events, or adultery (if that's your thing). I went to maybe a dozen infosec conferences across the US a year or so ago and there were maybe 4 sessions total where I was like "yeah I should implement that" or "I hadn't considered this ADCS escape mitigation".
