It's literally the point of Android. Apps can control every single detail of your phone. You wanted an open platform? You got it. On iOS shit like this isn't allowed and the EU is actively suing Apple to force them to open their platform up to let apps do this.

Anon, this shouldn't even be possible
>>
>>109462082
It has a page with a QR code that you can scan at a McDonald's location to earn reward points. That cranks the brightness to max when you go on it, presumably to give their machine the best chance of reading it even on a shitty phone.
>>
>>109462098

>>
>>109462125

>>109462131
not talking about the qr example the other anon mentioned, maybe you want a more dynamic control of the screen dim that goes beyond the one included with android, where the less light on the light sensor means more dim.
>>
>>109462159 (me)
i know it may sound stupid, it does until you need something like that. it's something cool that you need to give permissions for. it's your fault if you give them without realizing
>>
>>109462159
>qr
How about making the user realize he needs to adjust the brightness or just show them a small text like 'HEY DUMBASS YOU NEED TO INCREASE YOUR BRIGHTNESS' outside of the qr code
>More dynamic control
Make a patch and merge it into AOSP

>>109462170
>it's your fault if you give them without realizing
The whole point of phones is that they should be easy, apps restricting basic features doesn't make things easy
>>
>>109462187
>making the user realize he needs to adjust the brightness
or we could use this convenient, little api to do that thing for the user, i think that could be pretty neat!
>Make a patch and merge it into AOSP
are you retarded? an API that does that is already on AOSP, otherwise the program wouldnt be able to dim the screen at all
>phones is that they should be easy
they already are
>apps restricting basic features doesn't make things easy
OP gave the app permissions, and if you look at OP's pic, he's still inside the McDonalds app. if he left the qr window he would be able to manipulate the screens dim again

why the fuck are you even advocating for more closed down devices? specially taking into account that this level of control is completely optional, you receive a popup asking for permissions and all, if you don't want it just say no, the app will work just fine. this is /g/ - Technology, you know?
>>
>>109462284

>>
>>109462284
>or we could use this convenient, little api to do that thing for the user, i think that could be pretty neat!
And then block the user from using the basic functions of his phone because in an onslaught of notifications for permissions the user said yes once
>are you retarded? an API that does that is already on AOSP, otherwise the program wouldnt be able to dim the screen at all
You just said that Android doesn't give you that much control. Fix it and push it so you don't need to download a 500 MB app just to have slightly more granular control over your brightness
>they already are
But they won't remain easy if we tolerate such antifeatures as the app being more important for the settings than the user
>OP gave the app permissions, and if you look at OP's pic, he's still inside the McDonalds app. if he left the qr window he would be able to manipulate the screens dim again
Read >>109462098 again
>why the fuck are you even advocating for more closed down devices?
Closed down for the program, not the user. You are currently arguing for the user to have a more closed down device because some app will just request something it doesn't need and then take away your control.
>specially taking into account that this level of control is completely optional, you receive a popup asking for permissions and all, if you don't want it just say no, the app will work just fine.
Why are you assuming benevolence for all programmers?
>>

What a kino sentence. What a time to be alive.
>>
>>109462347
>And then block the user from using the basic functions of his phone because in an onslaught of notifications for permissions the user said yes once
problem exists between... uhhh... occiput and phone? every popup is about 6 words long, spamming permission is retarded, you could end up giving the app access to even worse stuff, like the phonebook, and we're complaining about screen brightness? that's not the fault of the android API, it's the fault of scummy developers
>You just said that Android doesn't give you that much control. Fix it and push it so you don't need to download a 500 MB
what apps you using that occupy 500MB lol. the example that i was describing would be very appreciated by a small portion of the userbase and wouldnt make sense to include in the broader AOSP environment, AOSP isnt even the place for such apps. anyhow, it was just an example of how having access to the screen brightness API can be useful, I'm sure there are others that I can't think of right now
>But they won't remain easy if we tolerate such antifeatures as the app being more important for the settings than the user
as far as I can see, the block of the brightness is limited only on the qr screen, and could be solved by simply leaving it, it's not system-wide. the qr screen is meant to be scanned and left, don't know why OP wants to change the brightness there specifically
>Read >>109462098 again
Read >>109462120 again
>Closed down for the program, not the user.
closed down for the program is closed down for the user.
just because there are retards like OP doesn't mean there aren't people who would appreciate a program that can access that API
>Why are you assuming benevolence for all programmers?
just because there are some bad apples doesn't mean we should lock down the usability of our devices down (talking about a harmless API, not talking about being able to rm -rf / or similar, don't twist my words), be it user-facing or developer-facing

So your entire stance is the phone shouldn't be able to execute code?
Because that's what you're asking for. Instead of, I don't know, questioning what the code is going to be doing before you allow it to rape the system dry?

It's stupid fucknuckles like you that share their contact list in a fucking spyware posing as a game or a calculator app and get everyone you know added into a database of easy victims to constantly plague with scamming telephone calls... Prove me wrong.

>It has good deals.
And in exchange for these deals, you gave up what, precisely? do you even know? You've clocked you've lost control over that aspect, what else?

BTW these are the things you should question *before* you install any random crap you think sounds clever because you're too dense to actually think things through to the logical conclusion.

>>109461361
It's not even about them "doing whatever they want". As long as the idiots don't think about what they do, before they do it, they can keep making them do it to themselves.

>>
>>109462301
>>spams ask for the permission or outright say you need to enable the perm for the app to work at all
Isn't that something you should have thought about before stepping near the (cr)app? Shit like this only exists because it has been tollerated. It never used to be like this...

>>109462516
>it's the fault of scummy developers
As per my previous comment. It never used to be like this. And because when it happened it was tollerated, it proliferated.
Not unlike the trend of advertising on the intelliwebs. There was a time there was none. Then the banner appeared, it was tollerated so it proliferated - then it started flashing. Then it became the Popup, which proliferated that hard and was that detested spawned an entire industry to attempt evasion. Now nigh-on inescapable without taking measures. And it's all because dipshits cannot think beyond their next meal and and desperately grab for moar munny... and this is rewarded with patronage.

are you talking about the amiga days? because as far as I remember this has always happened with phone apps. retarded apps asking for too many permissions. in fact, i'd say it has gotten better, though that may be because now i don't use that many apps, and when I have to i get them from fdroid, which ironically is better that gplay on that regard. i do agree with the rest of your post tho, you give them a hand and they take your whole torso

>are you talking about the amiga days?
Whilst that was indeed true - tho 90% of amiga never saw much more than a local network - I was referencing a lot later...

>this has always happened with phone apps
Not always. That's a much more recent thing. About the same time every idiot that doesn't think about what they're doing started to get a 'tardphone. When the first tardphones launched they wasn't data rapey. No more so than the leakage of the common dumbphone, that had to be added on later - and because it was gobbled up layers of complexity added as control is removed until you're left with the shit you get today.

>though that may be because now i don't use that many apps, and when I have to i get them from fdroid
Likely. *what* is very important here, but more specifically, how. Various SDK will result in libraries used that provision functionalities...
