Would you switch OS if Microsoft started charging a subscription fee for Windows?
I haven't used Windows for a decade
yesbut then again I'd probably just use windows 10 or 11 without subscription feewindows 10 iot ltsc has support to 2032 and windows 11 iot ltsc to 2035 or something like that
>>109462723Sometimes I forget that there are actual windows users besides companies so I thought you asked if we'd switch to windows.
>>109462723Modern windows is already unusable for free, let alone actually paying. The only windows I would be willing to pay for is if they made an updated version of windows 2000.
I'd keep using W11 until the live service slop I play no longer supports it, then i'd go back to linux
what kind of FAGGOT uses windows in 2026
>>109462723No, I’d adjust the registry to keep using it for free. Microsoft makes its money off of Azure and Enterprise stuff. They’ll offer Windows 12 as a subscription option, but it’ll be called Windows 365 and targeted at enterprise. They want as much market share as possible for consumers and making people pay a monthly fee to use their PC isn’t gonna go over well with them after 30 years of Windows at this point.
>>109462723Imagine giving money to Microsoft to thank them for what they have done to Windows and encourage them to go on. I can't even imagine.>>109462851I can't even imagine how hard these retards would turn our beloved 2000 into shit.
>>109462723>Would you switch OS if Microsoft started charging a subscription fee for Windows?Yes, but only if they bundle Office365 with it + Xbox Game Pass. I'd pay up to ~$30 for an all in one package. But they should lock it down by default (windows s-mode) so MS Store only, like every other sane OS does. Google Playstore, AppStore etc. That way they could also kick Steam off their platform without being a monopoly, because it's their security model + Steam has Linux. Even iOS is allowed to kick Epic Games / Fortnite. I'm just afraid that people would jump Windows, if they kick steam, which is retarded, buy a console at that point, if you want to be locked to one platform.
probably, but for now i would rather use windows than wayland.
>>109462838on what os did you think the most popular active player games in the world are played on?
>>109462723ima keep using windows until i get bored of the games i play then ill switch back to linux and once again go down the rabbit hole of basement dwelling activities file surfing and editing configs to rice my desktop
>>109462723AS it is right now? YesIf they somehow put together a really good coding team (pretend for a second) and made a version of Windows that was more inline with Windows 7 or 8 and was purposefully created with the sole purpose of having a Windows operating system, then yes, I would pay a subscription for that. I would pay for the non-shit version of windows. But we know they aren't doing that, and we know the people in charge of doing that are incapable of ever doing that.
>>109463631You can still use X, nothing is stopping you
>>109463378You're a genuine fucking retard, and I shouldn't have to explain why turning windows into MacOS wouldn't work and would result in MacOS instantly eating Windows' lunch.
>>109463631No, there are no serious alternatives.forgot that part as its obvious and irrefutable.
>>109463378Also a genuine wrist-slapper for not knowing why they discontinued S-mode in the first place. It was made for corporate environments, but who buys a corporate OS that can't use any corporate software?
I would pay 500 for another decade of support for win 7. What the fuck is wrong with you if you would pay for shitdos 11, slower than a fucking pentium 4 running windows xp?
>>109462723>One nifty trick to expand Linux's market share.
>>109462838This. I've ben running Linux since my basedboi Enlightenment WM XFree86 Linux 2.2 days. I read OP and thought "why the fuck would I ever run Windows unless it's on an employer's system and tied to a paycheck?"I literally forgot that people exist that willingly use it.
>>109462937you
>>109463378I always just shut off s mode, it's pretty easy and it makes refurbished laptops a lot cheaper
>>109462723>forced onboarding>forced to make a microshart account before you can even use Windows>forced to c0ns00m slopdates that bricks your computer >forced to keep telemetry and spyware services running out you can't use your computer>spend an unnecessary amount of time debloating just for all of it to reappear after another forced "update">slopdows shitdates are written by AI>hey what if we charge users $30 per month to just be able to log in? yeah fuck that shit. that's why i switched out of that dumpster fire 2 years ago.
>>109462723Yeah I'd switch back to win in a day or two probably
>>109462723havent used windows in like 15 years, get fucked retard
>>109462723No, because I already don't use Windows 10 or 11.
>>109462723>Would you switch OS if Microsoft started charging a subscription fee for Windows? No because I only use windows for work, so my work would just have to pay for it.
>>109464053Onedrive eating up your cpu and battery in the background. Hilariously it automatically tries to back up all your files despite a 5gb limit for free accounts. So literally 20 minutes in you get haggled with notifications to upgrade to more cloud storage. Kys macroslop. It wont be subscription cause MS knows how much everyone hates this turd and the expectation of windows being free has been set in everyone's head already.
>>109464276Windows has never been and never will be free. And no, contrarians trying to get upvotes, you know full well I'm not considering piracy.
>>109464643So what's your point here? Cause you obviously know about the $0.00 cost to upgrade to 10 a decade ago and 11 today from your older windows pc.
>>109462723Depends. If I can still activate it without paying and if it's still an actual OS, not some cloud based AI slop cancer, then no, I will continue using Windows. Otherwise I will look into alternatives.
>>109463378Here's your (You), now go away.
Windows on its worst day is still better than linux on its best
>>109462723There would be a mass exodus the likes of which has never been seen before if microsoft, one of the worlds most valuable companies already, actually tried to get the average joe to pay for windows in its current state. Linux is already prepared for 99% of office work, the other 1% would be solved in months if push came to shove.
>>109465109Yeah, on opposite day.
>>109463963>why the fuck would I do anything with my systemthat's certainly a lintroon take
>>109462723>Would you switch to using Windows if you had to start paying a monthly fee for it? Uhm, no
>>109466786I never said that
>>109462723why would I pay for an OS that I could get for free?
>>109462818And they would magically not put this subscription model in these supported versions why exactly? Im probably being baited. Go fuck yourself faggot
>>109463654Android and iOS, both are Unix :)
>>109467140>troonixtard has to play dumb to copekek, its ok u have no friends to play any games with lilbro
it would have to be as unintrusive as windows 7 to make it worth it
>>109463654I don't regularly think about gaming demographics
>>109463719>result in MacOS instantly eating Windows' lunch. How? This is just for security. And you still have hardware freedom over macs, so I don't see your point.>>109463726>they discontinued S-mode in the first placeThey didn't. And obviously corporate envs will get dev access.>>109464040>I always just shut off s modeOof...>>109465059>go awayChill anon...
>>109462723I'm still on 10 anyway
>>109462723Why would I change to windows if I not only have to endure this garbage but also pay for it?
will not switchwill not updatewill not pay
>>109466835Yes you did
>>109463654>on what os did you think the most popular active player games in the world are played on?Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch System Software. I couldn't care less about gaming though.
>>109467168>What's the most popular gaming platform?>Nooooo! Not like that!
>>109462723No fucking way would I pay for Windows. The only people using Windows are boomercorps.Every job I've ever done (except my first internship at a bank that was literally all jeets) had everybody using MBPs, even the secretary

>>109462723>$12/mostill too expensive.
>>109462723What more can they hope to offer, besides more Copilot usage? And to rub the salt into the wound, $99 per month for unlimited Copilot integrated into windows.
>>109470308Day of the rope and flush cant come soon enough.
>>109462723I wouldn’t switch if ms paid me $12/mo to use winblows
At that point I probably wouldn't have a choice. I'm not paying to do stuff with my own PC.
>>109462723No because then people will think I switched because they started charging.
>>109462723Yes, Windows having a subscription fee is a killer feature, and would make me switch from Gentoo to FreeBSD
>>109462723If they offered something in return then I would pay for it. Like having OneDrive storage, Office365, XBox Gamepass or similar. I can can imagine that they would add a Windows+ subscription in the future that adds all that while still offering the peasant free version so that all the third worlders don't cry about it. The noise pollution of Linux cultists screeching about it 24/7 would be really annoying but it can't get any worse than it is right now.

microsoft figured out a long time ago their target audience for windows is poorfags and refactored their entire business strategy around itget windows on more machines, gather more data about the users, make governments and advertisers more happythis started with heavily subsides windows xp oem licences being shoveled onto underpowered budget machines, eventually culminating in completely free updates (including for those cheap oem licences) and inexistent licence enforcement

>>109476729Freetards haven't had an argument for decades. They've been parroting this Windows subscription strawman for over a decade. The thing is it's already existed for years. Some businesses just WANT to rent Windows VMs with all their IT support covered and have no actual infrastructure to take care of themselves. MS themselves offer it, as well as tons of 3rd parties. Not that freetards would ever understand anything involving the real world much less businesses and having jobs.
