Most of them had what we called a shoutbox back then. One popular one used AJAX for sending messages. Forums died for a convergence of reasons.
Lots of them just imploded. Leaders wandered off, got interested in something else. Some were taken over by SJWs who banned or otherwise drove away all the interesting contributors. The internet was already consolidating by the time Discord started gaining steam.

Everything you mentioned is illegal or at least problematic, that's why they bothered with the hassle of hosting a forum in 2003+23, other people doing legal things would rather lean on a big tech platform like plebbit or the cord and get all the benefit. I remember when discord started implementing age verification many people started searching for alternatives, also when reddit changed their API pricing, and when xitter was bought by musk, but they couldn't find any as good alternatives, most of them returned and the remaining were not really liked on those bigtech platforms like hardcore chuds here, troons on bsky and mastodon, hardcore commies in lemmy, and pedos in telegram et al (those are just examples, so don't hyperfocus on them), the same you can say for windows and mac to linux; the "good" alternative is shit for most people that don't care that much about le privacy nor implementation details and are not brave to take the less convenient route.

IMO instead of trying to make the next failed shitty bigtech ad hoc service clone, it's better to make a whole general exchange protocol on top of tcp and udp, much like xmpp but better, that can replace every service and be homogeneous, and the most important thing it should be as simple to use and install that a grandma can use, while being hard or impossible to destroy by glowies and retards ddosing.
