One person controls the single global signing key.

Every update pushed to 400000 devices is signed by Daniel Micay. He already proved in 2018 he will destroy signing keys and brick thousands of users devices on purpose when he feels wronged. That same key can push any code, silently, automatically, to any phone, at any time. verified boot guarantees the device will accept it.

You would have no way to know what was added.

While I agree philosophically more with Rossmann, I appreciate Mr. Schizo's Dead Man's Switch.
If Israel tries to compromat him, he simply destroys the keys.

I never understand why GOS and the team around it has some sort of weird cult-like vibe. Any discussion on "what do I replace android with" always deteriorates into "NOTHING IS SECURE EXCEPT GRAPHENE".
I mean literally no other topic in open source software or private software or what have you has this kind of combativeness.

>all modern operating systems ultimately require trusting whoever controls the update signing keys
>GrapheneOS is not unique in this respect; Windows, macOS, iPhone, Pixel, Samsung, and others use the same trust model
>the main difference is governance and operational security around those keys, not the existence of trusted signing keys themselves
So what is your more secure and private alternative OP?
>>
>>109468341
Because
>what if I just...
is a slippery slope. We have over a decade of experience of garbage custom ROMs and OEM Androids not even having the most basic security features or gaping fucking holes in their security.
Open bootloaders, root access, disabled selinux, random apps with all permissions and root access, etc etc

Grapheme puts an end to this nonsense with competent devs and basic common sense. If you are retarded, just use ANYTHING else. The options are there.
But there is only 1 Graphene OS.

That's why people like me get so mad when retards like you suggest stupid shit FOR GrapheneOS
>>
>>109468707

Ultimately it is not a tech problem, it's an institutional trust problem.
From one point of view you can say that big corps like Apple or M$ have a lot of skin in the game and a lot of stock price to lose if they pull retarded shit like throw a tantrum and brick client devices, whereas a small FOSS dev team has no such guarantees and if the head maintainer goes off his pills he can just burn it all down one day.
From another point of view you can say that big corps like Apple and M$ are too big to care about customer experience so they may do anti consumer bullshit, enter into agreements with security services, etc. whereas a small dev team with a committed head maintainer have values.
It's a purely human problem, you cannot engineer a solution to it.
>>
>>109469027
so in the end, grapheneos is just as trustworthy as microshit and apple.

tim apple, bill gates and david micay. they are all the same.

Wtf are you talking about? How does destroying singing key will break devices?
>>
>>109466068
This is in fact how signing was always supposed to work. Ask yourself why GPG signs everything with a key attached to your email address, for example?
It's because signing keys are supposed to belong to people not machines. There is supposed to be an identity behind it.

I've used Android for well over a decade. Google already has my "life story." So really what's the point? It's not like I'm going to morph into a different person or my "identify" is suddenly going to change. What benefit I am going to get by switching now?
>>
>>109470965

>>
>>109471026
I get it. I agree. Nothing about me is really going to change. Google already knows my hobbies, my interestes, places I frequent, where I work, where I live, my taste for big assed latinas, my shitposting habbits on 4Cums... None that is going to change and they already known everything. So, what? I inconvenience myself on an OS to protect "data" (((they))) already have?
Makes no sense.
But, you're right. Cell phone newcomers? Yes. Even iPhone users moving to android would benefit.
>>
>>109470965
For me it's not about my identity or trying to hide stuff or whatever. It's more about the basic principle of me telling my device exactly what I want it to do and it doing exactly what I want it to do, instead of it telling me to get fucked and eat shit, which is how stock consumer OSes tend to operate. I'm okay with being told to get fucked for not having a stock OEM signed ROM, I like to keep mental notes of entities that do this sort of thing.

>Any discussion on "what do I replace android with" always deteriorates into "NOTHING IS SECURE EXCEPT GRAPHENE".
which is factually true, it's the most secure BY FAR general purpose os available on the market right now, linux-based OSes, hardenedbsd, openbsd and macos included. It's also VERY hard to reach their level of security on custom yocto linux, even on seL4-based os it's a massive amount of work (that's my day-to-day job)

it's ridiculous how easy and "cheap" it is to get the most secure general purpose os in existence these days, grapheneos with pKVM-based desktop mode will be INSANE value for secure environments, I could see a future with grapheneOS running on armv9-based tiny desktop machine.

First, most Europeans on this board actually live in free countries where destroying evidence against you is actually legal (nemo tenetur se ipsum accusare) and second, you don't actually need this code for your data to be 100% secure. Just set the reboot timer to 2 hours with no unlock and have a 64 character unlock password. Of course only GrapheneOS actually supports these stronger passwords.

As for the comparison - the reason why Chink phones are a threat is because the Chinese can use them to spy on US citizens, while US phones can't do that without the user installing Chinese spyware themselves.

Are you scared about targeted, malicious updates by the feds taking over GOS? You are not forced to use auto update. Builds are currently reproducible, so you can build and push all updates yourself or download public update builds, which means they could only target everyone to get to you.
If you are scared of GOS being infected with backdoors for all users, you can inspect the source code (& take your meds).

In general EU doesn't have the crazy US destruction of evidence laws.
In the US is it a crime to destroy evidence even if there was no crime or even a real investigation.
All they need to show is that they were maybe gonna do an investigation and that you deleted something.

On a side note, never keep any encrypted files or drives that you legitimately forgot the password to, because you can be held indefinitely until you give them the right one.

Are you retarded? You can call 911 even from a locked phone, that's the advantage of modern file based encryption. Plus, it's the BFU unlock password, which you only need to enter once. Afterwards, you can unlock via the keys in the secure element, either PIN, biometrics or both (2-factor, once again a GOS exclusive feature). The reason why I even mentioned the reboot timer (something you are evidently unfamiliar with) is because it returns the phone to BFU if it hasn't been unlocked in X hours.

So practically speaking
>phone gets stolen or collected by cops
>for the next four hours they could, in theory, extract the keys from the secure element. This has never once been accomplished and there isn't even a theoretical framework on how to do this. Or they could force you to use biometrics + PIN to unlock it, which you can refuse, even in the US.
>after four hours of no unlock, the phone returns to BFU and needs the ultra long passphrase because the keys have been erased from the secure element, biometrics and PIN are now worthless.

If you think such an attack is realistic (it is not), no one is forcing you to use the internal updater. You can sign your own firmware and build your own updates.

But that is really useless because as an open source project, GOS gets the same type of public scrutiny that PostmarketOS, /e/OS, Sailfish and others would get. It is impractical to hide male ware inside a public update that would get pushed to all 400k+ users in stable. Even if you believe such a scenario is practical, this would apply to all open source operating systems, including Arch, Gentoo and even Alpine.
The only real practical way for the feds to push a malicious update is to push it only to you in particular. Even ignoring the difficulty in finding your device in the first place, you could simply avoid being targeted by downloading the public updates from the GOS website and install it locally, as many users do.

Why wouldn't it be realistic? Its a huge target. And no, I don't believe you would be able to hide malware in an update. But once it is compromised, the project is done. The trust is gone. Everyone will have to reinstall. The momentum is gone. It's enough to stop the immediate threat towards authoritarianism. Which is the goal.
>>
>>109477993
So what you're saying is, while they could not realistically push an update like that to spy on people, they could use it to destroy the project?
>>
>>109478002
That would be the longer term effect, yes. They could probably do some short term direct damage with a backdoor update before the GOS infrastructure is taken offline. But it's simple cause and effect.

When signing keys need to change for whatever reason, it's detrimental to the project
Just look at copperhead and calyxos. But this would be way worse. So I hope there are enough mitigations in place to protect against it.

>>
>>109478275
You are not thinking about this properly. While this may not impact you significantly, it has an enormous effect an its momentum, and thus its success. Authoritarians want to have control over population, a few dissidents don't matter, and smaller groups are easier to control. It's about the masses. Same thing happened with Bitcoin. They stopped its momentum and now they can control it.

They just want to stop mass adoption of something they can't control and will cause them to lose power. That's it.

You can't, really. If anything threatening gains too much traction, an incredible amount or resources will be spent to stop it. You can avoid pretty much anything individually, but not as a large and growing group. They'll splinter communities and put forks in the road before any of that happens. Nobody who cares has the power to stop it.

Stopping centralized power is very difficult and can pretty much only happen with a political revolution stopping mass centralization of power of both public and private parties. None of what I see happening in the short term. Anyone who has tried or will try it is silenced one way or another.

So what should average users use, as a privacy respecting OS?
>>
>>109482540
GrapheneOS preferably for everything. Use desktop mode. Use the built-in terminal to run (GUI) GNU/Linux applications. Pretty much every FOSS applications can run on a GrapheneOS device.

If you have to use x86 for any reason. Use a coreboot distribution like heads as boot firmware. Use an operating system like secureblue or qubesos.

To be fair. Not a single operating system can be set-up privately by an "average" user. So you'd need someone that has enough knowledge to set it up for them and instruct them how to use it in a way that ensures their privacy and security. This goes much further than the operating system and even base applications. It's the services that are the biggest hurdle.

The entire relationship with technology needs to change for average people to have a private computing experience where they are in control. Education needs to change. Technical support systems need to change. Stores and vendors need to change.

There is no demand for it right now. People just buy what is available. Use the services that are presented and advertised to them. Associate themselves with people who do and think the same way. Distance themselves with weirdos who don't go with that flow.

As long as that is the case. Nothing will change, and the power structure will stay the same.

It's just not convenient.

and for what? to keep google from showing a lawn mower ad after I searched for new lawn mowers?

>Switching between profiles
Perfect is the enemy of good. You don't need different profiles for everything. While it's preferred for proprietary malware, just using an actual private OS with a lot of permission control helps a lot.
>Having to use a browser for everything to minimize apps
A browser is prefered. You can make it more convenient by pinning web apps. It doesn't have to be a hassle.
>Ruined warranty of phone
A Google Pixel keeps it warranty when a third party OS is installed.
>and for what? to keep google from showing a lawn mower ad after I searched for new lawn mowers?
That's just a direct effect you see. There are many more both on an individual level but more so on a societal level. Downplaying that doesn't help anyone.

Then explain why I should be overly concerned? I see a lot of talk about using Graphene, but no one has yet explained exactly WHY we should be using it - other than (((they))) are spying on you!! Ok.... what exactly is going to happen if they (((they know))) I watch YT videos, buy shit off eBay, where I went Saturday afternoon,, or shitpost on 4Chan?
I'd be more than willing to consider switching, but I am not going to out of some unspoken boogieman.

The problem isn't if or when someone knows you do something. It's about you being in control of what you share and with whom. You can close the curtains of your home. You can't close any curtains on a device you don't own.

GrapheneOS just gives you power and control, like you have in your own home. If you want to give access to everything on your device to every application you install, you can do so! Nobody is stopping you to share anything with anyone. But only you decide who has access to what, and nobody else.

When you use the stock OS, you give Google and others way more access than you are really aware of. There are people in your home continuously examining you and everything that happens and sharing it with the entire world, without you even knowing what is going on.

At this point GrapheneOS is the mark of the pedo.
It is 100% compromised at the provider level and serves as a honeypot, if you have GrapheneOS, you are doing the opposite of hiding.

banned by feds because the hardware outperforms the three majors and still does (samsung, apple, google). This is exactly why they banned Huawei. My P30 Pro still shits all over modern pixel 10s apart from the curved screen.

Then why are there so many bot posts trying to discredit it? Sure seems like a coordinated effort. This is pretty obvious because they never propose a better alternative, telling people not to use a security tool because it's not perfect has a net negative on overall security if the alternative is to go back to stock android.

It is true and it puts me off to the point I just use an iPhone now

The way he behaves is very odd and I get that people usually that smart and dedicated to doing something for free usually have some extreme neurodivergent difficulty but he's almost on another level of high functioning toxic autism

You need to crack the whip as the head of the FOSS project because you constantly have a lot of people below you that make it their mission to pull the project another way and don't know what they are doing but him just insulting anyone that says anything other than something positive about GOS is just borderline insane.

It is hard to deny though aspects of the project are miles ahead and better than anything else

Any other rom almost universally has the flaw where you can flash an update through TWRP to bypass android security because there is no bootloader locking, even on Pixels and Oneplus where the ability is there the developers just ignore it.

This is a small thing GOS supports that makes it different and its very easy to understand which I think is why it has the following it does, there is no other custom rom that even comes close to a secure yet stock experience on Android.
