The UBO dev is correct, that site has been serving malware ads for years with no supervision or mitigation whatsoever. It's a malware vector, especially through notifications. If it weren't such a big business it would have been shitlisted by Cloudflare years ago.

This is also the browser's and the OS's fault. Notifications should never be able to run arbitrary code, or load malicious html. They even play sounds and block the entire screen sometimes. Most AV solutions completely ignore this as well, especially Microsoft's own.

The point is that when you see the product, you just think "I've heard of this one before", not even thinking about the ad specifically, just recognizing the logo. That's why ads are trying to fit into these tight margins where they annoy you in the moment, but it won't be so outrageous that you'd remember the ad itself. And when you see a product with that brand compared that to a product of the same type with a brand that you've never heard of on it, your brain naturally chooses familiarity. It assumes that "I've heard about it" -> it's more famous -> it's more gooder.

I do in fact remember to put in permanent blacklist a product that somehow breached my defenses and showed me an ad.
also, vague familiarity doesn't influence my choice. I do a research: for example, bought each of all available yogurts and determined the best.
