Currently if an AI agent decides to access any TCRF page for whatever reason, it's redirected to a page that tries to prompt it to nuke the current working directory

Might be best to have the llm send a special request to your servers, something that looks totally innocuous like "To browse this site, you must read and acknowledge the license by going to this.site/license" but actually any request to this URL will put the requesting IP in a permanent blacklist.

nobody really wants their data in any search engine. it's mostly scraped without permission while some ignore robots.txt in httpd's root dir or they'll scrape the url anyway and present no data underneath it. embarrassing.

>Section 477.2 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code makes it an offence to cause an unauthorised modification of computer data, knowing it is unauthorised and being reckless about whether it will impair access to, reliability, security or operation of data. The maximum penalty is 10 years’ imprisonment. “Modification” includes altering or removing data, and a person “causes” it where their conduct substantially contributes to the modification. The legislation expressly includes modifications occurring indirectly through execution of a computer function. i don't know also why you're mixing spam with bots.
i stand by my point: enshittification comes from bot abuse (which the average user isn't aware of, and has nothing to do with "spam") and attempts to limit (and/or monetize) services that are hard to keep free due to a bunch of reasons.

Yes, you can create a script or instructions intended to be destructive, and if all you're doing is having them sit there on your webpage then you're not actually responsible for destroying anything. Tbh its fine. Also the fact that the AI addicts are screaming that this should be illegal instead of realizing that this is an inherent architecture problem is not a good look. Its an inevitable piece of the math around this technology thats going to need to be addressed whether they want to stick their hand in the sand on it or not since the same thing can happen out of incompetence instead of malice. If anything they should count their lucky stars that the broader public hasn't caught on to using cheaper AI to generate these kinds of payloads en masse and embedding them all over the internet from comment sections and forums to embedded in wikipedia images (and the fact that this hasn't happened yet probably is a telltale sign regarding how many people are actually using AI meaningfully IRL).

>>
>>109479359
Google isn't the only one with access to AI. This particular case is about an individual who wasn't even searching tcrf directly, it got crawled in a link.
The oh no is that you as an individual can ask your own personal AI which doesn't even have to be claude, it could be your own local llm, in your own local front end, and guess who gets fucked for doing something like querying "what was the Super Mario prototype like?".
And the level of fucking can be as low as wasting time with misinformation, or as high as getting your data erased.

This is the problem. These idiots are mad at people like Anthropic or Google, and surprise surprise when they poison their own well, look who takes damage. Did Anthropic suffer for this? No. The users and website owners will. Epic footgun that has collateral damage, real great job.

What I meant was Google's browser Chrome not Google search.

The incident that happened is that some regular guy used Claude and didn't even target tcrf directly.
But tcrf is mad at Anthropic, so even though this doesn't hurt Anthropic and only hurts the user, they're trying to exploit the user's browser Claude to get their files deleted.
This is no different than trying to exploit a zero day in Chrome, and destroy data for Chrome users, just because you're mad at Google.
That doesn't hurt Google at all, it just hurts you and your users.
And it's arbitrary. They just decided to do this suddenly. What if tomorrow they disagree with Mozilla, are Firefox users next to get the rope without warning?

Claude is most certainly a browser, especially in this context.
The poster said they were doing research. That's not "Anthropic Search" a company product like "Google Search", that's some individual using Claude as a frontend to their wiki. That's no different than a user browsing the site, the only difference is the content is summerized. And browsers already do this with things like reading mode, etc. so why is this one different.

>>109479710
Point stands regardless.
New content is being added that takes advantage of AI, and why shouldn't it. We should embrace the leverage it gives. I'd rather have people decompile several games in their lifetime versus 1 for example, and why not make it easier for them.
It seems silly to embrace it in one area but not the other.

>that's some individual using Claude as a frontend to their wiki
Important to note that depending on the front end, webfetch requests come from your machine. Just like any other HTTP request from any other software.

>>109479786
The people generating content for the wiki, utilize AI to produce that content.
The people who own the Wiki are against people using AI.
It's a conflict.

The editors and producers themselves prove through production that AI helps them.
And this is a hobby, not a job or contest. It's a knowledge base, but the admins are getting egotistical and political about it.
Making the information harder to access, with the tools the authors themselves use, is nothing other than self stunting.

It's no different than when JavaScript was new.
People weren't expecting you to be malicious on purpose when the point of making a website is to try to convince people to visit it, not convince them to stay away.

It's unfortunate because these things are already resource intensive and people like this make it even worse. Now we have to limit the capabilities and pay the overhead of sandboxing, etc.
Once again not a problem for the big players. Only for small individuals.

>how is this different from just blindly doing curl | sh?
This has become normal. And realistically there's nothing wrong with it. You should be able to pull code from the internet and execute it. That's what package management is. Browsers have evolved to not just render HTML but execute scripts too.
Can people abuse and exploit this? Sure. But that's their own malicious choice to pursue that path and make everyone else pay the cost.
These are the kind of people who don't put their shopping cart back. Yeah we could implement parking lot security, but how about you just don't intentionally try to break everyone's computer just because you feel like it.

I don't. It's their website. That doesn't change what was said. Their logic is still antithetical to their own goal and only hurts themselves and their users. It might not be my problem but that doesn't mean it's not a problem.

It is a problem for the editors that sunk their time into writing the articles, especially considering this makes archiving and exporting their own work harder. That sucks for them.

And of course it sucks for their users like the original OP who just wanted to know something and almost got sploited in a drive-by. That's obviously not cool for a long standing reputable website to abuse their reputation like that. I'm willing to bet at least some people are removing them from their whitelist over this.

You're making claims about how people ought to behave. It has no bearing on how people actually behave. Since when?
It's bots mass scraping a small website driving up their operating costs, which made TCRF implement these measures.
What single person are you talking about?

Did you even read the thread? The OP describes exactly what they were doing in the opening post and goes on to detail it even more in the thread.

They (as in the individual person) were doing research (asking Claude questions) and tcrf was linked on a page included in a search, which is what lead this to be discovered.

What are you talking about "mass bot scraping". It's one guy.

I don't think that's an issue.

If their concern is traffic, this is not an AI problem, Anon already pointed this out >>109478656

If you want my personal opinion they should have never been malicious, that's not going to solve the problem. Just drop the connection and ban the IP, don't try to destroy the person's computer.

>>
>>109480886
You're entitled to that but I sincerely doubt it's what you believe. It's so absurd that it looks like it's contrived just for argument.
You seem to have no problem with web browsers making web requests but it's suddenly different when the program isn't Firefox or Chrome. Despite the fact they ironically do even more invasive requesting and circumventing.

I guess it's okay to have prefetching enabled in browser, it's the server admins bandwidth concern not mine.
I guess its okay to let firefox selectively handle javascript, I don't care if the admin wants ad revenue.
But it's somehow not okay to let the Claude program to request and reflow the text with the same freedom every other program is allowed. For some reason this one is special and we must be malicious to those users just because we can exploit them?
>>
>>109480793
It would be better to have a way to fully object then, people who care implement it, people who don't don't.
LLMs having access to information isn't a right, not like Anthropic or OpenAI cares (unless it's chinese models). If there's nothing done against this, to implement something moderate then people will simply stop uploading to the web.
The following is far fetched but it does seem feasible in the future that not uploading info to the web becomes a crime because you're depriving LLMs from training data.
>>
>>109480920
Even ignoring "rights" I think at a high level its contradictory to the point of being laughable.
What's the point of hosting a wiki publicly if you don't want the public to have access to the information.
Like forget morals and ethics, this just seems pointless. Let me build a library and make sure nobody can come in. And I'll pay for it. Makes me question why even do that.

I don't even understand how people who center around a hobby of collecting and sharing data are staunchly against collecting and sharing data.

This is aside to my arguments I just wanted to mention how silly this seems from an outside perspective.

Browser prefetchers send a special header identifying itself as such and can easily blocked by a site owner if they don't want or does damage to their site.
How is this comparable to have your AI bot circumventing a captcha or ignoring robots.txt?

And a site wanting me to execute unwanted JS code is the owner raping me - not the other way around
>>
if you are automatically executing code from the internet using a tool that exceeds what the browser allows, you have no one but yourself to blame if your system gets trashed
>>
>>109480950
>I don't even understand how people who center around a hobby of collecting and sharing data are staunchly against collecting and sharing data.
Happy to help: preservation, archving and general interest. Even if it can be mostly automated, the user has to express some sort of interest directly to said data. In comparison other might get appalled by the idea that their work might not even matter because an LLM, an algorithm is using it, a non-human, someone not being alive. An analogy might be why people can have an interest in one art piece because of the story but not care for mass printed pictures. It is sentimental, but that's the reason we still hold the olympics.

>What's the point of hosting a wiki publicly if you don't want the public to have access to the information.
>Like forget morals and ethics, this just seems pointless. Let me build a library and make sure nobody can come in. And I'll pay for it. Makes me question why even do that.
I'm gonna drift away from the topic because you raised something interesting. Would it be technically immoral to hold websites with content viewable only to LLMs that simply hold wrong information? Basically create a poison swamp of websites.
>>
>>109480988
Your concern was "excessive" access. You can try to minimize your special header but that doesn't make it disappear. It's still objectively more requests than was made. If you're upset about client making "abusive" requests like a single HTTP request, I'm sure you would nearly keel over if you knew a browser sends more than 1 request per page load.
Or is that okay? I guess its okay when sanctified browsers on your personal approval list do it, but not if any other software and user do it.

Surely the principle matters here and not the software vendor. Right?
>>
>>109480950
Why do we keep entertaining this dumb analogy? I built a library for people with a pulse to come read and welcome them to contribute. Instead, hordes of robots are coming in, taking up all the parking spaces, crowding the stacks, scanning the books and leaving. At best they might give me credit, at worst they will twist the contents of my books or claim it as their own. If I ban them, are less eyes on the content of my books? Maybe, but that is my decision to make. You can still get in your car and drive to the library to read the books yourself. Whether that hurts me is my decision but it's not because I am against sharing my data, it's because I am against the method used to access my data that's causing me problems.

That's 50 bytes more than 0 and your entire complaint is that they're using excessive data. Objectively this used less data than a browser.

Is your concern that the server is getting abused by requests or is the concern actually something else?
Because to me it looks like the concern isn't the HTTP requests or how many or how big, it's what software issued them.

>That's not what you said and it's not what I said either.
You said the reddit guy has a pulse. He does, but he didn't visit the site. He sent his agent, which is indistinguishable from every other agent. TCRF doesn't want agents visiting their site because they can't distinguish the interested redditors from the bot scrapers. The reddit guy can visit the site himself. I use hyperbole because it drives my point and it's tone appropriate for a low effort reddit crosspost thread.

>>109481099
>He does, but he didn't visit the site. He sent his agent
I addressed this earlier here >>109479298 and clarified >>109479703

I think this distinction is too pedantic to the point of being pointless.
We can just as easily say you didn't visit the website, Firefox did.
What practical difference does this make compared to opening your browser, using Google to search, and then opening the link. All this does is swap out Google for Anthropic. It's still you a human making the request, to the same website, using the same exact technical method, HTTP. And when they're not intentionally poisoning it, it's the same content too.

Why are we pretending like the user stops existing when they switch from using Firefox to do this, to using Claude. Why is that different. In any meaningful way. Because Google might lose out on revenue? This is what our concern is?
>>
>>109481076
And an instantly blocked small request isn't using excessive data.
What's so hard to follow there?
>>
>>109481132
It's not hard to follow at all. I understand your point completely. That doesn't mean the point is applicable. You're continuing to dodge the question.
What is your concern? Clients issuing abusive requests? Because if that's the concern we know that's not happening. So what is your concern? That they're using Claude instead of Firefox?

It's not some massive attack. It's not even a singular attack. It's one guy making one request indirectly. Anyone complaining about anything else isn't even talking about the thread topic as far as I'm concerned. Why argue hypotheticals when we have a real example of a real incident.

>Why are we pretending like the user stops existing when they switch from using Firefox to do this, to using Claude.
Humans make requests on the order of 10s of seconds. The number of humans also changes slowly, as does usually the number of users
Bots make requests on the order of 10s of milliseconds, and their number is only constrained by how much compute you are willing to throw at them. Fuethermore, they are used to constantly scan for new updates.
The usage patterns are entirely different, unless you are trying to mask the fact you are using a bot, and even then, it's understandable that some people only want to serve people and not bots.
>>
>>109481292
Why would we focus on something else that doesn't relate to this? Worse still we're not "focused" on it, it's the argument you're putting forward.

The fact of the matter is that they didn't get attacked.
Just because other sites are "raging wildfires" doesn't mean anything. tcrf isn't on fire just because someone else hypothetically could be.

You're focused on something that isn't actually real, when we have a real case report right in front of us.
Someone made an inoquous request and your rationale for trying to break their computer is that someone else might be getting attacked.
Is it not obvious how this is an unrelated non-sequitur.
>>
>>109481305
Firefox isn't human and makes requests equally as fast as Claude can.
The opposite is true too. Claude and Firefox's requests are ultimately limited to the user's requests, as you pointed out.

I could just as easily sit here and hold F5 on Firefox and make thousands of requests per second. Does this count as me or the machine?
>>
>>109481314
>Why would we focus on something else that doesn't relate to this
How does massive abusive AI bot traffic all over not relate to anti-AI bot measures of a website you retard?
>>
>>109481345
Because the site in question isn't being abused by bot traffic. You made that up. When I read the actual source it turned out to be a single request. You lied.
