While he generally also wanted to release all of that, one of the huge aspects of the GPL is that you can take that code and do whatever the fuck you want with it, as long as you’re not trying to profit off someone else’s work. It’s really quite beautiful. Fork away- I’ve given up on trying to contribute upstream. I fork, use Claude to get what I want, and assume the maintenance burden going forward of bringing in dependency updates and sometimes rebasing on upstream. Sure, you don’t want to do this too often, but with AI it’s way less work than it was before. Embrace change, guys. We are more empowered than anyone to take advantage but lemme tell you I have worked with people who don’t know the first thing about programming and have been able to tighten up and ship their slop apps; if we don’t embrace the tools we will be replaced by those who do.
