We'd be PERFECTLY fine with DSL speeds even in 2026 if ads were still just a couple 8kb GIFs and websites 50kb worth of html.
Even 720p video can look perfectly fine if you use good encoding.

The 9001 JIGGABYTES PER SECOND connections are solely to make your live less miserable due to the fucking retard bloat java hell and video ads.
>>
>>109477288

This is why I have a Pihole and ad blockers. I'm using a computer from 2010 as a desktop and it's fine for web browsing.
>>
>>109477288
Can't stream and play lockstep videogames at such low speeds, need at least 100mib
>>
>>109477542
Why do zoomers believe this?
>>
>>109477288
honestly I wish we lived in a time where every ISP provider just focused more on latency than fucking retarded amounts of bandwidth, if we had 30mbs but with better routing, we would be living in a time where you could play a game with your friend from both sides of the coast with like 40ms of latency.
>>
>>109477288
Having lived through dial up, ADSL and other such early-internet connections no I'd rather keep my 1Gbps connection thank you very much.
But we certainly don't need websites that connect to 500 other "partner" websites/servers every time you load them.
>>
>>109477288
Nah fiber internet allowed me to pirate shit in minutes instead of days like in the ADSL days.

I remember when GTA 5 came out on PC and the 60GB download took over 20 hours to finish over DSL. With fiber, it downloads as fast as my disk can write it. If you really want to cut the junk data, just install a pi-hole or adguard home on your router.
>>
>>109477542
even if the entire game is being hosted on the server and streamed to you like a video, that still isn't true.
Video games use a microscopic amount of connection bandwidth, less than 1mb/s in most cases.
>>
judging by the thread seems like really fast broadband is solely needed by gaymen
>>
>>109479488
It's not needed by gaymen either.
>>
>>109477590
I would swap gigabit for ADSL any day if we could get back the mid 2000's internet. Gigabit is pointless if there is nothing worth downloading.

>Even 720p video can look perfectly fine
When YouTube started doing full-screen, DSL wasn't going to cut it there is no way anyone is going back to waiting for a video to buffer for most of their watching time again.
>>
>>109477978
Piracy is mostly dead now though, a fast connection is pointless if there is nothing to download. Back in the day there were torrents for pretty much everything that existed.
>>
>>109477288
No. I have 2Gbps and am already planning for the 10Gbps future.

Being mind raped by intrusive ads is way worse than waiting for buffering. Also, buffering actually used to work, which was nice.

Speak for yourself, redditor. People with jobs and hobbies beyond shitposting on imageboard stuck on 2002 tech find more benefit in fast internet than any fake coping mechanisms you can come up with. Especially true for those of us who were actually alive at the time and have experience with dial-up and DSL. What's the deal here? CRTs aren't enough? Zoomers and alphags have to latch onto slow internet as obsolete tech to hail over everything better?
>>
even high connection speed don't really help since websites are slow as shit nowadays, fucking youtube takes almost 2 seconds to load every page, regardless if there's video on it
CDNs everywhere and gigabit speeds yet everything feels sluggisher than used to be in 2007
>>

There still is.

World Of Warcraft ran fine on 2003 internet speeds
>>
>>109477542
streaming primarily needs bandwidth not that low latency, and with modern codecs even not that much bandwidth.
games don't need much bandwidth, just low latency.
With good AQM and packet pacers (read: linux) those things can be done simultaneously.
You only need to overprovision bandwidth if you're dealing with a shitty network stack or if your video encoder shits out bloated frames.

I still use DSL at my beach house and it's fine if there's only one or two persons using it. It can stream 1080p netflix / youtube and all that, and pages load up fast enough. Downloading takes forever though
>>
>>109477542
Lockstep games only transmit user inputs and game state hash. The only thing that matters for them is latency, but the bandwidth they can run on is tiny. That's the whole point of deterministic lockstep networking.
>>
I like fast game downloads and hosting my media on a server

>>
>>109492148
Remote vehicles requires sending multiple video, data, and sensor streams to the controller
Mesh internet requires more bandwidth: more hops, route redundancy, and every node acts as a route for other people's traffic
Downloading a file creates a copy, network storage gives you a view and streams the file as needed while keeping file remote. Completely different, unless you think piracy is stealing.
>>
>>109492242
>Remote vehicles requires sending multiple video, data, and sensor streams to the controller
And it has to be 4k 120fps why?
>Mesh internet requires more bandwidth: more hops, route redundancy, and every node acts as a route for other people's traffic
You know mesh networking already exists, right? You can test the bandwidth requirements yourself and learn that you're full of shit.

>>
>>109492389
Remote desktop uses very little bandwidth unless you use abominations like vnc (in which case it still uses very little bandwidth with modern protocols and the bottleneck is latency and not speed).
>>
I work at a fiber ISP but only have VDSL 250mbit at home. It's slower than our cheapest fiber package and also a lot less reliable since it's fucking DSL. Luckily DSL hardware is finally being discontinued by the DSLAM manufacturers so even shitty ISPs are forced to switch to fiber.
>>
>>109492376
It has to be 8k so it can see small things far away because it's moving fast.
Downloading and uploading files are separate line items from remote file storage. I didn't list "transfer data packets between machines" I listed what I listed.
>>
>>109492431
Run a vnc or find a remote desktop software that runs smooth and usable in 56kbps. I dare you.
>>
>>109492443
Nigger why would you need internet for that. All the data in sensors passthrough car's internal circuitry.
>>
>>109492448
vnc always has been and always will be hot garbage, that is not the same as "remote desktop". That's like saying you need the largest NAS ever because videos encoded as raw image bitmap sequences one per frame take several tb's to store while in fact 700mb does the trick for a properly encoded video at 4k.
>>
>>109492442
Also anyone who thinks that DSL is "good enough" is going to have a rude awakening when we terminate his contract and turn the shitty old DSLAM off
>>
>>109492471
So. Did you find that remote desktop software yet?
>>
>>109492470
It's remote
The vehicle isn't doing any processing because it's cheap
>>
>>109492489
You fucking profoundly retarded faggot. Vehicle does all the calculations in itself. It's not "cheap". Sending the "brake" or "is this car too close" requests to a remote signal to get processed is retarded and will introduce copious amounts of delays. Just like you.
>>
>>109492510
Nobody's in the vehicle so who cares if it has to go at a reasonable speed or at a safe following distance? Also, not cars but drones and trains and subs and also cars.
>>
>>109493097
>Also, not cars but drones and trains and subs and also cars.
Whole different categories of vehicles. Drones are dump. Most likely they actually send requests. Cars other hand are driven by citizens and a unpredictable delay can cause car to not force-fire brakes, resulting death of people retarded like you.
>>
>>109477978
Yeah my speeds are good for piracy basically, including illegal streaming and downloading a lot of youtube shit.

not quite.
websites often use framework packages that are hundreds of kB in size and sometimes hosted on different domains, so there's a lot of extra downloading and slowdown added
>>
Makes no difference to me. Despite living in a city, apparently the cheapest ISP plan available to me is $100 a month for 500MiB/s. Apparently Spectrum decided to remove all of their lower-tier and cheaper plans so everyone has to pay $100 a month even if all they do is read email. And there's no point in trying the "I'm gonna go to your competition" trick to get a retention rate, Spectrum knows they have zero competition in this area.
The really sad part is I could just get an unlimited 5G data plan through my cell phone provider for cheaper than the cheapest home cable or fibre internet plan I can get. Feels like they are trying to push everyone onto smart phones and wireless networks.

>>
>>109477288
AI killed DSL/POTS, mobile carriers bought traditional ISPs to have access to core infrastructure for data centers and they've already decided they don't care about residential customers. AT&T is killing Lumen's DSL next year.

No, I work with various systems, one of them are PACS systems for hospitals, clinics and labs, some imaging requires fast broadband, we are talking of imaging that requires be seen by specialists minutes away.
Ultrasounds, X-rays are the lightest, but take a tomography of 2K slices, that shit requires 300 Mbps at minimum, otherwise it takes more than 10 minutes to send and diagnostic could be late. Nuclear medicine, Magnetic resonance, angiography takes the most broadband requirement.
Low resolution images in these studies are a death sentence, and not receiving a single image is unacceptable.

The other fields I work with is CDR/voip, which are pretty much logs to calculate insane amounts of information, I filter a lot of that shit, out of 90GB of daily info I may take around 1GB into databases. Bash/python filtering is essential. And CCTVs, which you know, is video. And finally, the infamous ERPs/CRMs, which relies on tons of PDF files from terrible government servers.

What I agree on is we have a lot of industries that should optimize its data, protocols and fucking websites. It is insane the number of companies that rely on terrible practices, protocols and legacy software. Patents are a pain in the ass and the main reason humanity hasn't reached the stars yet or hasn't cured cancer. Then you have standard definitions that takes decades because a bunch of huge manufacturers thing they can do better with their own standards only to realize their mistake, finally agree on something and by the time it gets released, there's already a newer and better standard, then discussion comes back and nothing gets done for another decade.

Internet is bloat nowadays because of shitty and half-assed infrastructure caused by patents and terrible progress by the organizations of defining standards.
