literally nothing changed, you were never able to actually uninstall anything since the system partition is read only, all that changes with A17 is that when you "uninstall" system apps they will now stay in your list of disabled apps and you will be able to re-enable them with a single tap rather than having to do install-existing command
...I'd argue it would still be better to give the choice like before but people are retarded and disabling makes more sense than disabling + hiding the package like before, the end result is the same but it's easier to recover the uninstalled package in case you fuck up.

exactly, plus the app is hidden from your app drawer as well.
the only difference from uninstalling is that the app is still taking up space in your internal storage and can be re-enabled at any time without having to re-download it from the internet.
this is the same exact behaviour as previously ""uninstalling"" system apps in android <16, with the only difference that you had to use an adb command to re-enable such apps rather than doing it through settings, there were only downsides doing it that way.
google just removed that nonsensical ""uninstall"" option that was just disabling but with more downsides and no advantages and people that don't understand how android works now are mad.

yep you heard that right, they decided to decrease the time between android versions at the time when they're the most stagnant, literally just a marketing move to increase fragmentation further and push devices into ewaste more quickly for no benefit.
A16 did revamp the entire UX as they usually do every once in a while, but every other release has been laughable, most of the changes aren't even available in AOSP and are just pixel related stuff.
increasing the time between android version to a major release every two years and maybe a minor .1 release every year (like they used to do up until A8 oreo) would've made so much more sense but we of course jewgle wouldn't do that.
