If you upload a PNG file to 4chan, it will create a shittier version by transforming it to JPG, and will show that one while browsing on mobile. The mobile file will have a "m" at the end of the name.
I've only found instances of this on /pol/ (onb4 go back) so far, and only on files of size > 1.4 MB.
Why is that? Why show the low quality version of an image to mobile users, considering that phones usually have higher resolution displays than desktops? Just because it reduces bandwidth?
This basically makes text unreadable on mobile. For a board like /pol/... That's kinda odd, it defeats the point of reading news or whatever. Unless it's done on purpose.

It's because of the limited bandwidth cell phone users usually have.
When posting from a mobile device, we assume you are mobile as in moving through a city

I hope you illiterate retard realize that mobile users are the ones affected in this case, and that you will always be able to access some desktop website from a phone.

>>109479408
Sure, that's what I assumed. But why give it such shit quality? It went from 1.4MB PNG to 76KB JPG LMAO

The orignal image wasn't posted by me.
Also, you can still retrieve the original one on desktop. It will show you the JPG only while browsing on a mobile browser.

phoneposters save the mobile versions of the pics and later use them in their own postings
absolutely rebarbative

don't want mobile versions of pics? use a desktop user agent. or one of the 4chan apps.
they are a remnant from 10+ years ago or whatever, when mobile internet was still a pita and relatively slow.
>>
>>109480122

you still can't read small the text from the OP in a smaller screen if the image is compressed to hell, you absolute retard.
4chan could easily pass that image through optipng to save some bandwidth

This feature is a relic from when most people had data caps, it's not necessary anymore and the only reason it's still around is because this site never gets any updates that aren't harder captchas or more fingerprinting spyware. It's not an issue anymore nowadays with unlimited data unless you live in some shithole country.

That's not even the worst part, when you ffprobe that JPG, it's the using the baseline profile and chroma sub sampling.
I'm pretty sure most phones today can decode JPG progressive with full chroma resolution at like 100 MP/s.
I don't understand what the fucking purpose of JPG baseline 420 blaze it is on the modern internet in 2026.

There are now altchans that support webp at least. We get banned if we mention names but they are growing in numbers so it's not as hard to find them anymore.
Avif is pretty controversial and it does seem that Google succeeded in killing Jpeg xl. Practically speaking Webp seems like it's going to be the next thing whether people like it or not.
In my honest subjective experimentation with Webp I've found that it offer significantly better compression of Anime images compared to JPG but not in photographic images.

>Webp = 96.16% support

>Why show the low quality version of an image to mobile users
Because mobile users are careless retards anyways that won't give a shit 99.9% of the time. Also they take up the majority of the bandwidth.
Doesn't matter if phones are marginally higher res (many aren't anyway), the screen is too small to see the detail regardless.

I'm not sure if "shilling" Webp with actual ads is even necessary desu, it's doing just fine getting adopted by a huge number of websites these days.

webp has problems beyond just having garbage compression.

I'd add support for jpeg xl before I'd bother with webp.

in fact I'm probably going to write a script where if someone uploads webp, my website converts it to a {filename}.webp.jxl.
>>
>>109485057
The only reason webp usage is rising is because Google is telling all webmasters that their site is complete garbage and will get -100 score in Pagespeed if they don't use WebP to save 0.01kbyte in image size.

I had clients bitching at me because I used webp to get better pagespeed scores and the images ended up looking horrible, so had to revert webp conversions. If Pagespeed was not pushing Webp, adoption would still be 1% like JPEG2000 and APNG.

The effort needed to convert your own personal clips to be uploaded to this fuck ass website is for the birds.
The amount of times I converted some gameplay clip from mp4, removed audio, make sure the compression isn't fucked, choosing between webm or mp4, etc. Just to have some fags ignore it or simply don't engage because it ruins their argument and derail the thread or simply the thread dies soon after.
No small part as to why effort posting or OC died on this site.
