btrfs confuses me because half the people I know say it's the best fs and half say it's a joke fs and will cause data corruption guaranteed.
I've been using it since Fedora didn't let me pick anything else and I was too lazy to go back to manually partition my SSD and reinstall but I am wondering if I should use ext4 on my new PC.

There was an extensive RedHat campaign to shill XFS, and it funnily lost in RedHats own distro.
The one time the Fedora community managed to overrule RedHat orders was when they decided for BTRFS rather than RHEL shilled XFS.

I use BTRFS since it was experimental, so more than ten years, and i never experienced any problems with it.

ext4 doesn't have checksums and cant do compression.

What you can do, is to use the btrfs features that make sense to you. Like compression does make a filesystem faster, additional to saving space, when the CPU can compress faster than your drive can write. This means that the choice of compression (and if you want to use it at all) depends a lot on your hardware and use case.
Use subvolumes that make sense to you.
Disable cow on folders with large files.
