What are the pros and cons of using SD/ MicroSD cards instead of USB flash drives for data storage?

Less aura

You used to be able to open phone's back, put it in, and never think about it again.
Not anymore.

Speed and form factor? Practicability, bulkiness.
Also durability, resistance to elements/magnetism/blunt force.
Access to writer and reader.

>braindead question about smallest form factor data storage
this guy is probably a criminal

SD card + USB reader is basically the same as a flash drive but less convenient so I don't see a reason to use SD cards outside of hardware that specifically supports them with a slot.
The market is fucked now but a year ago I would have said the best thing you can get for USB drive is a cheap nvme in enclosure. Even a cheap one is fast enough to make good use of USB3+

Pros: compact, good place to store games for emulators. Also gave you the ability to move all photos/videos/documents between phones with just a few movements, but now it's gone from 99.9% of new phones because you gotta pay for cloud storage and/or better model, goy
Cons: worst durability out of all storage options, however they can still serve you for years with no issues (as long as you have bought legit Sandisk/Samsung one). I have a bunch of MicroSD cards that work to this day, and ironically they outlived the phones they were used on. And they are also pretty fragile so don't forget to remove them before you disassemble your Steam Deck lol

I keep my files on DVDs

Pro: small, but delicate and volatile.
Cons: small, but delicate and volatile.

If the data they contain is important enough, then put it on spinning rust ASAP.

OP here. My main attraction to SD cards is their read-only switch for data security, but if they’re really that fragile, what’s the best alternative?

It’s a crime to spread the Gospel in some countries. So, you might as well do it discreetly.

They are not a long term solution. Tell your folks to get you a refurbished hard drive for the holidays.

You can swallow it if you get FUCKOOD

Why refurbished?

What does that acronym mean?

That depends.

Has anyone here ever had an SD card (or other flash medium) lose its data after sitting for a while? I've been hearing about this phenomenon for 20+ years and have never experienced it myself, despite going through hundreds of cards in my time doing photography and videography work.
Apparently people leave an SD card in a drawer for a few years, mount it, and find that the files have disappeared. I must be extremely lucky, because I can dig up off-brand compact flash cards from 2002 and everything is still there.

Old cards last longer because the density is less.
>>
>>109507320
That makes sense, but I remember this being a topic of discussion even more so back when high-end cards were only a few gigabytes. People didn't trust flash memory for video when it started replacing DV tapes in the mid 2000s. I just wonder whether or not it was as big of a deal as they made it out to be.

ATTENTION EVERYONE

i am hijacking the thread.
how do i make sure my rpi 4b has a peristent backdoor in it, even on sd card wipe?
i tought about eeproom but it can only do basic shit. netbooting a custom os by default only works with ethernet, and most people dont use ethernet.

how do i do it bros? i want to spy on my wife's boyfriend when he uses the pi at his apartment.

we got 512 KB to wrok with, and no linux executable encironment. maybe we can write the script directly to the sd card sectors on boot?
>>
>>109500793
The part about them being volatile is overstated. I have found 10+ year old SD cards in old camcorders and all the files played without issue.
>>
>>109496912
You can lose them REALLY easily.

Just tell your wife you like to watch.
>>
>>109504534
Because clearly you consider the investment on superior storage to be financially burdensome. Otherwise you wouldn't be asking about SD.
>>

I wasn’t really considering price. You see, I am a welfare extraordinaire. Anyway, HDDs aren’t as portable and aren’t they more fragile?
