>>109516646The problem is that the regulators in those supplies, when they fail, fail in the direction of passing on whatever the input voltage into the regulator was rather than going open circuit. I don't recall what the internal DC voltage off the transformer is in a C64 PSU, but the 7805 will take anywhere from about 6 to 30 volts. In short, it's a ticking time bomb, and when it fails, it blows the shit out of your Commodore. Best idea is to switch to a new PSU and just keep the old one on the shelf for looks, although some people have hollowed out the originals and put new guts into them, but the amount of resin they use inside those things is a cunt.t. retrocomputing turbo autist

Right now you have an OS that's designed to sell things to you, with an AI interface (plus every "app" is designed to distract you etc). Back a generation and it's a more primitive salesman, back further the OS company is making secondary software and trying to shill that at you, back further and the company is still making the secondary software, but bundling it with new PCs and using distribution deals to make money - the core interaction the user has with the computer is mostly still about manipulating the machine, further back you remove the abstraction of GUIs and type in commands or if you're smart enough write your own, and far enough back you're practically just programming - typing programs in from magazines or writing your own, using casettes at best.I think that's all it is. A genuine interest that's simply more fun when you strip all the bullshit away and simplify it. To varying extents.
