It is used to identify you and therefore control you (harvest data, etc). The more data you give to companies, the more they profit and the less say you have in what kind of AIDS (ads etc) they insert to the products you use.
The same applies to any situation where you are forced to make an account seemingly for no reason, for example see that pop-up "sign-in with a Google account" on every website?
