yes i did fall for them. i have never seen or interacted with a mechanical keyboard until today and its left an extremely bad impression.
also no, im not buying more switches for a board that i dont even like out of the box.
>>
>>109523066
Ur refunding it just buy a different keyboard anon
Kinda the thing with this hobby is there's a million different things to keep track of so you'll likely run through a bunch of different switches and layouts until you find the one that works for you
>>
>>109523066
That being said I kinda hate mechanical keyboards. I find them fragile, unreliable, poorly made in a lot of cases and I don't like the maintainence. That's why I have a model m.

>>109523134
I noticed also that mechanical cherry switches have a limited lifespan. They are a consumable product. I wonder if the hall effects switches here will last longer. They are hot swappable in this case so I think I'm good. I can jerk off on this keyboard on purpose.
>>
>>109523766
>mechanical cherry switches have a limited lifespan.
50 million (or 100m on the new ones) actuations is a large enough number to make it so you won't be hitting it during your entire lifetime with normal typing. Yes, hall effect switches have a theoretically infinite lifespan, but it's not like normal contact based MX switches were practically limited by their lifespan anyway.
>>
>>109523917
>50 million (or 100m on the new ones) actuations
not in my retarded experience with balls
>>

they still have little dickhead springs and plastic parts that glide into eachother like assholes with lubrants and probably the plastic parts themselves are offgassing and becoming autistic liquids over time

I did buy a he keyboard after getting sick of cherry switches chattering and it had the same issue
"50m keypresses" but it's very likely you'll be replacing individual switches in a matter of months even on a high end keyboard just because the solder joints wear or the switches begin to chatter.
>>
>>109523764
Beamspring round 1. If you order one without any extras it's like $299 right now so I threw them an order just for the novelty of owning a beamspring keyboard
Don't really know how well it'll work in practice.
>>

i tried putting rubbing alcohol inside the switches because you can't exactly take them apart and ended THROWING the keyboard up into the toilet

I have a Filco Majestouch2 Keyboard 104-key with Cherry Brown keys, if you can afford one I don't know why you would buy anything else.
I have a tried a couple of the TKL options from Aliexpress that people rave about and they are average at best, the key stability is awful and you get a varied response depending on where your fingers hit the keys.

I also think anything louder than brown is annoying unless you are buying the keyboard especially for games.
>>

wow... I remember seeing it like 2-3 years ago but it left my attention.

Ya I'm still very skeptical about it but whatever my money's gone I'm gonna try it
I want it to be good cause I love the idea of beamsprings

RIP Filco. They were always kinda overpriced but they were at least good boards.

Been thinking about getting a properly shaped foam fill for my F122 repro instead of fucking around with loose polyfill and PE foam cutouts. What would be the best way to get the right shape? Or maybe there's some type of self-forming foam available? The issue of this repro is that to save weight the case is thin aluminium, meaning the whole thing sounds hollow and reverberates, so it doesn't sound as good, but also the assembly curve is so close to the steel backplate that you can't feasibly force foam under it. Or maybe I could use some other type of thin foam, like Porox.

Do 60% keyboards with f keys exist? Found picrel on amazon and it seems decent enough. I want a keyboard to pair with it, but I dont want arrow keys. I use all my f keys pretty often as keybinds in games, so they're non negotiable.

they're extremely overpriced for what you get. PBS keys that get shiny after a few months and no hotswap switches. cherry switches are trash too

i bought an epomaker galaxy 100, although ive been having some issues with it (the spacebar specifcally) so I'm thinking of getting a refund for it and getting something else. I do enjoy the sound and feel of it though. Does anyone know of any other 1800 / 96%-fullsize keyboards that are similar?
I was looking at maybe getting a Neo98, Zoom98, Akko Mineral 02, or does anyone have any other rec's

sorry for off topic (mechanical)
im wondering if anyone has experience with the hhkb studio? is it good?
ive been longing for a good mechanical keyboard with a trackpoint
>>
>>109534152
that's not off topic. it's probably fine but very overpriced for what you're getting. hhkb has also built its reputation on topre and for whatever bizarre reason they chose mx switches for that thing. the gesture controls are also probably a meme
>>
>>109529945
Topre is kill
just get an EC PCB, a compatible plate and the EC Naevies
no need to fiddle around with domes and springs and dogshit Topre compatible stabilizers
>>
the only battlecruiser you need is an F1-8X OG on a plywood desk with a torrefied sitka spruce soundboard suspended 1 inch below it and joined at the corners with Baltic birch dowels
it's time to make your desk an acoustic extension to your keyboard
>>
>>109534222
i see, the keyboard looks nice but from the sound tests ive seen it sounds very thumpy and probably loud, definitely felt like the price is a bit astronomical
i also feel like the trackpoint feels worse than on the thinkpad, maybe thats just the nature of a trackpoint with a longer stick
do you know if there are any good quality mechanical keyboards with trackpoints that dont have an insane price attached to them?
im willing to go to 150 eur but more is fine if the keyboard is reputable and good
>>
>>109534435
>do you know if there are any good quality mechanical keyboards with trackpoints
there are basically none

the only other keyboard I can even think of with a trackpoint is tex shinobi but I wouldn't really recommend it because it uses weird non-standard 0.95u keycaps and shit, but it does fit your price range.
>>
>>109534296
>just get an EC PCB, a compatible plate and the EC Naevies
at that point you might as well just get an HE keyboard and put raeds in it since the switch is identical in feeling but the technology is superior
>>
>>109522165
Back in the day you had to wait like 3-4 years for your order

>do you know if there are any good quality mechanical keyboards with trackpoints that dont have an insane price attached to them?
These are semi-common in the split/ergo market, though a lot of the time you have to DIY, the availability on prebuild boards is still limited.
For example https://holykeebs.com/products/corne-choc offers to prebuild one with a trackpoint for you, though it's a bit pricey. You might also be able to find some on aliexpress.

I bought this on Amazon:
>YINDIAO Ajazz AK820
Is it going to be alright? I did some research on keyboards last night (first time in my life) and found some others around $250 that looked nice, but then decided I'd just spend $50 on this from Amazon instead.

Im coming from a full size mechanical keyboard, so Im mainly getting this for the space savings. Also hoping this board will have a nicer sound and less latency than my Logitech board.
>>
>>109534672
2nd gen cases were M-style anyway, cept he made them out of metal instead of plastic. the original zinc F repro is still available for whoever wants it.
>>
>>109535042
>the original zinc F repro is still available for whoever wants it.
I'm happy with my F77, but that anon says he wanted a battleship and it's apparently only available in aluminium
>>

The Round 2 refers to the beam springs that now use a more classic breadbox style case, and I got an F122 which is based more on the Model M than the old terminal ones that he initially reproduced. The OG F122 had the top case made out of plastic, and here it's cast aluminium. It's still 4kg like the OG F122 but it has a more modern layout, a more robust case that won't crack like the old plastic one, and the hollowness is just a side effect of using a better material for the top case while keeping that extra empty space that now acts as a resonance chamber hence why it sounds hollow.
I have other nitpicks about it as well, like the awful looking extra gap by the F13-F24 row, or how the assembly mounting holes cause it to be shifted to the right when attached to the case, but that's aesthetics. The mechanism itself works really well and all in all it's a very nice keyboard. The fact that a single guy managed to reverse engineer this all by himself and get it into production is a feat on it's own.
>>
>>109535874
>The Round 2 refers to the beam springs
Nobody was talking about beam springs.
>>
>>109535920
And Joe doesn't refer to his FSSK, F104 and F122 as "Round 2". He doesn't really use "rounds" for the Model F variants of his at all, just the beam springs. For the "second round" of the Model F's he chose to use aluminium as he decided to recreate the Model M keyboards in a Model F fashion as per popular demand, since the F62 and the F77 are rather unpopular layouts, as cool as the zinc alloy cases were. And in that sense, the "shitty aluminium" case is a straight upgrade over the plastic ones, especially the brittle ones of the F122. The F62/F77 weren't 1:1 either, Joe's alloy ended up being denser than that of IBM's.
>>
What are some go-to brands? I'd be happy with:
>Metal, as little plastic as possible
>Whatever they're calling the normal layout with a numpad these days
>No lighting whatsoever (Aside from normal stuff like an indicator light for caps/num lock)
>Wired
>Black
>Preference for cherry brown as that's what I'm used to using, but open to new switches if the technology has improved
>User serviceable, something I can replace parts on if necessary, or keys if the text gets worn off from use
Looking for sturdiness and reliability. Use case is regular word processing and non-competitive gaming. I'm not looking for gamer branded shit at all.
>>
>>109535874
>>109535950
I didn't need an autistic rundown for something I already summed up in 2 sentences.
>>
>>109535958
You want what's called a 100% size and those are unfortunately not super popular in the hobby, so your choices are boomer companies like filco that overcharge way above what the keyboard's worth, or relatively niche stuff
Metal is also somewhat rare

>Wired
>Black
>No lighting
>User serviceable
These are very common and standard though, and switches these days are also often hotswappable which means if it doesn't come with browns, you can easily order browns separately and swap them out with zero soldering (or try the new switches, or try various other switches to see what you like best...)
So the main difficulty is finding a metal 100% that's not extremely overpriced

Or if you wanna spend $300-400 you can also just buy an F104 (or F122) from Joe

of course people will buy them, you'll just have to price them accordingly. you'll most likely make a profit by sourcing the replacement keycaps instead of selling without. the cable is the real bitch, i've seen them go for almost as much as the board itself.
>>
>>109536829
duh but if it sells for peanuts, I might not bother. The SDL cable costs $55 + shipping + tax + tariff + tip, keycaps from Unicomp are similarly expensive.
