Day whatever of waiting on model f order to ship
cherry mx 3.0s wireless with brown switches is fucking loud and clacky and not even tactile. getting the refund. massive disappointment.
>>109522853>Fell for brownsTry clears they're like if browns were made acceptably
>>109522962yes i did fall for them. i have never seen or interacted with a mechanical keyboard until today and its left an extremely bad impression.also no, im not buying more switches for a board that i dont even like out of the box.
>>109523066Ur refunding it just buy a different keyboard anonKinda the thing with this hobby is there's a million different things to keep track of so you'll likely run through a bunch of different switches and layouts until you find the one that works for you
>>109523066That being said I kinda hate mechanical keyboards. I find them fragile, unreliable, poorly made in a lot of cases and I don't like the maintainence. That's why I have a model m.
>>109522165what did you order?
I just received this one in the mail and it has the magnetic key switches and it's great but I still want to kill myself so>>109523134I noticed also that mechanical cherry switches have a limited lifespan. They are a consumable product. I wonder if the hall effects switches here will last longer. They are hot swappable in this case so I think I'm good. I can jerk off on this keyboard on purpose.
>>109523766>mechanical cherry switches have a limited lifespan.50 million (or 100m on the new ones) actuations is a large enough number to make it so you won't be hitting it during your entire lifetime with normal typing. Yes, hall effect switches have a theoretically infinite lifespan, but it's not like normal contact based MX switches were practically limited by their lifespan anyway.
>>109523917>50 million (or 100m on the new ones) actuationsnot in my retarded experience with balls
>>109523941Try typing with your fingers instead of your balls then.
>He doesn't use a Model M with a USB controller conversion modNGMI -- Your switches have a finite lifetime, my springs will last until Mount Rushmore is unrecognizable.
>>109523946i don't know how>>109523917>hall effect switches have a theoretically infinite lifespanthey still have little dickhead springs and plastic parts that glide into eachother like assholes with lubrants and probably the plastic parts themselves are offgassing and becoming autistic liquids over time
>>109523962Pay these sheep no mind, springchad.
>>109523766I did buy a he keyboard after getting sick of cherry switches chattering and it had the same issue"50m keypresses" but it's very likely you'll be replacing individual switches in a matter of months even on a high end keyboard just because the solder joints wear or the switches begin to chatter.
>>109523764Beamspring round 1. If you order one without any extras it's like $299 right now so I threw them an order just for the novelty of owning a beamspring keyboard Don't really know how well it'll work in practice.
>>109523991i tried putting rubbing alcohol inside the switches because you can't exactly take them apart and ended THROWING the keyboard up into the toilet
I have a Filco Majestouch2 Keyboard 104-key with Cherry Brown keys, if you can afford one I don't know why you would buy anything else.I have a tried a couple of the TKL options from Aliexpress that people rave about and they are average at best, the key stability is awful and you get a varied response depending on where your fingers hit the keys.I also think anything louder than brown is annoying unless you are buying the keyboard especially for games.
>>109523997>Beamspring round 1wow... I remember seeing it like 2-3 years ago but it left my attention.Model F is cool. Pls do a quick review when you get it.
>>109524191Ya I'm still very skeptical about it but whatever my money's gone I'm gonna try it I want it to be good cause I love the idea of beamsprings
>>109524061RIP Filco. They were always kinda overpriced but they were at least good boards.
Been thinking about getting a properly shaped foam fill for my F122 repro instead of fucking around with loose polyfill and PE foam cutouts. What would be the best way to get the right shape? Or maybe there's some type of self-forming foam available? The issue of this repro is that to save weight the case is thin aluminium, meaning the whole thing sounds hollow and reverberates, so it doesn't sound as good, but also the assembly curve is so close to the steel backplate that you can't feasibly force foam under it. Or maybe I could use some other type of thin foam, like Porox.
>>109523951>with a USB controllerYou, my friend, are the one who is NG to MI.
>>109526245That's why I was disappointed to find out only the 1st gen board had the zinc case, that shit is savage. But I'm not buying a board without an F row.
MX Browns?MX Browns!
Topre gang, Topre gang, Topre gang (Topre gang)Spend three racks on a new chain (Yeah)My bitch love do cocaine, ooh (Ooh)I fuck a bitch, I forgot her name (Brr, yeah)I can't buy a bitch no wedding ring (Ooh)Rather go and buy Balmains (Brr)
>>109526245Sorbothane would definitely get rid of the hollow sound. Might not even need to cut it to a specific shape & just lay down a sheet of it on the bottom of the case.
>>109521167Man, i just looked at the prices for Unicomp Model M full size "classic". I bought my Unicomp for 80 bucks back in 2011 and thought I was being overcharged. 150 is highway fucking robbery.
>>109530581Ya I remember back when they were 50 bucks but the issue was they didn't use the original tooling so they weren't as well built as the new ones, so I went for a genuine m instead at the timeNew ones are actually worth buying
>>109530581You can thank the tariffs for making "made in america" more feasible :)
Got this on a super deal, my first real keyboard. All my life, I've been using dirt-cheap membrane keyboards, entirely skipped the mechanical ones, and now I'm going full analog.I can't wait.Keychron J2 HE TMR WiredLike it was 66 usd after taxes in Romania, given the competition (with taxes applied) it felt like a steal, we'll see.
>>109530207Am Yuropoor so I don't think I can get my hands on that. Maybe I could try getting some thinner PE foam, like the stuff sold in hardware stores for floor panels. I got a roll of 1cm thick one and that was defo overkill.

Do 60% keyboards with f keys exist? Found picrel on amazon and it seems decent enough. I want a keyboard to pair with it, but I dont want arrow keys. I use all my f keys pretty often as keybinds in games, so they're non negotiable.
>>109524061they're extremely overpriced for what you get. PBS keys that get shiny after a few months and no hotswap switches. cherry switches are trash too
>>109532158you should be able to rebind keys.
>>109532220Sorry, let me clarify, I'm looking for a keyboard that does not have arrow keys, but still has function keys, since the numpad already has arrow keys on them, and I'd rather use those than ones attached to my board.
>>109531175I have two battlecruisers, one at work and one at home. Luv them, gets lots of good comments. I think i paid 130 in 2021 but they went up over 200 before they stopped making them
>>109532158No. Closest you'll get is 68-70% but they usually include arrow keys. You could hand wire like pic related. Or...https://dinofizzotti.com/blog/2021-02-07-fnrow-v1-a-configurable-function-row-layout-mechanical-keyboard/
i bought an epomaker galaxy 100, although ive been having some issues with it (the spacebar specifcally) so I'm thinking of getting a refund for it and getting something else. I do enjoy the sound and feel of it though. Does anyone know of any other 1800 / 96%-fullsize keyboards that are similar?I was looking at maybe getting a Neo98, Zoom98, Akko Mineral 02, or does anyone have any other rec's
>>109534086neo boards are very good. I have a neo ergo and only good things to say about it. I'm sure meletrix boards are also good but I haven't had oneI stay away from the non-custom chinky stuff like epomaker, keychron, akko, etc
sorry for off topic (mechanical)im wondering if anyone has experience with the hhkb studio? is it good?ive been longing for a good mechanical keyboard with a trackpoint
>>109534152that's not off topic. it's probably fine but very overpriced for what you're getting. hhkb has also built its reputation on topre and for whatever bizarre reason they chose mx switches for that thing. the gesture controls are also probably a meme
>>109529945Topre is killjust get an EC PCB, a compatible plate and the EC Naeviesno need to fiddle around with domes and springs and dogshit Topre compatible stabilizers
the only battlecruiser you need is an F1-8X OG on a plywood desk with a torrefied sitka spruce soundboard suspended 1 inch below it and joined at the corners with Baltic birch dowelsit's time to make your desk an acoustic extension to your keyboard
>>109534222i see, the keyboard looks nice but from the sound tests ive seen it sounds very thumpy and probably loud, definitely felt like the price is a bit astronomicali also feel like the trackpoint feels worse than on the thinkpad, maybe thats just the nature of a trackpoint with a longer stickdo you know if there are any good quality mechanical keyboards with trackpoints that dont have an insane price attached to them?im willing to go to 150 eur but more is fine if the keyboard is reputable and good
>>109534435>do you know if there are any good quality mechanical keyboards with trackpointsthere are basically nonethe only other keyboard I can even think of with a trackpoint is tex shinobi but I wouldn't really recommend it because it uses weird non-standard 0.95u keycaps and shit, but it does fit your price range.
>>109534296>just get an EC PCB, a compatible plate and the EC Naeviesat that point you might as well just get an HE keyboard and put raeds in it since the switch is identical in feeling but the technology is superior
>>109522165Back in the day you had to wait like 3-4 years for your order
>>109526245>>109526766Wait what the fuck lmaoThis guy spent half a decade autistically making sure every detail of the repro is as close to the original as possible, and then on the round 2 he just ditches the old cases and throws in some shitty ad-hoc aluminium one? That's beyond retarded
>>109529945Wash your fucking window
>>109534435>do you know if there are any good quality mechanical keyboards with trackpoints that dont have an insane price attached to them? These are semi-common in the split/ergo market, though a lot of the time you have to DIY, the availability on prebuild boards is still limited. For example https://holykeebs.com/products/corne-choc offers to prebuild one with a trackpoint for you, though it's a bit pricey. You might also be able to find some on aliexpress.
I bought this on Amazon:>YINDIAO Ajazz AK820Is it going to be alright? I did some research on keyboards last night (first time in my life) and found some others around $250 that looked nice, but then decided I'd just spend $50 on this from Amazon instead.Im coming from a full size mechanical keyboard, so Im mainly getting this for the space savings. Also hoping this board will have a nicer sound and less latency than my Logitech board.
>>1095346722nd gen cases were M-style anyway, cept he made them out of metal instead of plastic. the original zinc F repro is still available for whoever wants it.
>>109535042>the original zinc F repro is still available for whoever wants it.I'm happy with my F77, but that anon says he wanted a battleship and it's apparently only available in aluminium
>>109524061Awesome things. The chassis is loud as fuck and the keycaps are average, but it's the sturdiest mx board out there. Zero bullshit, just a standard keyboard.t. mt2 mx blue tkl
>>109534672>>109535042The Round 2 refers to the beam springs that now use a more classic breadbox style case, and I got an F122 which is based more on the Model M than the old terminal ones that he initially reproduced. The OG F122 had the top case made out of plastic, and here it's cast aluminium. It's still 4kg like the OG F122 but it has a more modern layout, a more robust case that won't crack like the old plastic one, and the hollowness is just a side effect of using a better material for the top case while keeping that extra empty space that now acts as a resonance chamber hence why it sounds hollow.I have other nitpicks about it as well, like the awful looking extra gap by the F13-F24 row, or how the assembly mounting holes cause it to be shifted to the right when attached to the case, but that's aesthetics. The mechanism itself works really well and all in all it's a very nice keyboard. The fact that a single guy managed to reverse engineer this all by himself and get it into production is a feat on it's own.
>>109535874>The Round 2 refers to the beam springsNobody was talking about beam springs.
>>109535920And Joe doesn't refer to his FSSK, F104 and F122 as "Round 2". He doesn't really use "rounds" for the Model F variants of his at all, just the beam springs. For the "second round" of the Model F's he chose to use aluminium as he decided to recreate the Model M keyboards in a Model F fashion as per popular demand, since the F62 and the F77 are rather unpopular layouts, as cool as the zinc alloy cases were. And in that sense, the "shitty aluminium" case is a straight upgrade over the plastic ones, especially the brittle ones of the F122. The F62/F77 weren't 1:1 either, Joe's alloy ended up being denser than that of IBM's.
What are some go-to brands? I'd be happy with:>Metal, as little plastic as possible>Whatever they're calling the normal layout with a numpad these days >No lighting whatsoever (Aside from normal stuff like an indicator light for caps/num lock)>Wired>Black>Preference for cherry brown as that's what I'm used to using, but open to new switches if the technology has improved >User serviceable, something I can replace parts on if necessary, or keys if the text gets worn off from useLooking for sturdiness and reliability. Use case is regular word processing and non-competitive gaming. I'm not looking for gamer branded shit at all.
>>109535874>>109535950I didn't need an autistic rundown for something I already summed up in 2 sentences.
>>109535958You want what's called a 100% size and those are unfortunately not super popular in the hobby, so your choices are boomer companies like filco that overcharge way above what the keyboard's worth, or relatively niche stuffMetal is also somewhat rare>Wired>Black>No lighting>User serviceableThese are very common and standard though, and switches these days are also often hotswappable which means if it doesn't come with browns, you can easily order browns separately and swap them out with zero soldering (or try the new switches, or try various other switches to see what you like best...)So the main difficulty is finding a metal 100% that's not extremely overpricedOr if you wanna spend $300-400 you can also just buy an F104 (or F122) from Joe
Picked up these 6 for 200€ a couple of months ago (they were dirty but I cleaned them) and sold the one complete model M for 140€. Will people buy the model Ms if they're missing keycaps and their SDL cables? I already had 2-3 model Ms and I was really only interested in the model Fs.
Love this little guy like you wouldn't believe. Non retarded layout, neat bilingual keycaps, nice SKCL greens, even has a cute little buzzer that you can toggle to ring on each keypress
what's so good about topre that justifies its cost? why aren't there a million clones like with cherry?
>>109536592Cool. We had Zenith TVs growing up, had no idea they made keyboards.
>>109536415of course people will buy them, you'll just have to price them accordingly. you'll most likely make a profit by sourcing the replacement keycaps instead of selling without. the cable is the real bitch, i've seen them go for almost as much as the board itself.
>>109536829duh but if it sells for peanuts, I might not bother. The SDL cable costs $55 + shipping + tax + tariff + tip, keycaps from Unicomp are similarly expensive. I'd sell it for 60€ to a guy who wants to replace the controller with a USB mod and get a new set of nerdy or regional keycaps, and I wondered if these people actually existed
>>109536921look up similar listings to get an idea of how much you can expect. pay attention to things like cable, keycaps, feet and birthday sticker, cleanliness and any marks/dents.
Hopefully found a permanent solution to wobbly keycaps.
>>109521167Got an Aula F75, which I really like and think it's a very solid keyboard. Are there any better keyboards? Had a keychron before this and thought it was a solid choice. I still think it is, but aula is better
>>109523991>"50m keypresses" but it's very likely you'll be replacing individual switches in a matter of months even on a high end keyboard just because the solder joints wear or the switches begin to chatter. This, had to relace my spacebar switch because it was sending double keys
>>109536592Zenith's Heathkit division had some nifty keyboard kits.
any ergonomic keyboards vendor located in europe that you guys would recommend?
>>109541048you think you'll ever get tired of posting that shit?
>>109541075It's literally just for bumping the thread, get your panties out of a twist faggot.
>>109541085won't answer the question yet *i'm* the one with a twist?

Yooo my phenom actually arrived, this shit bussin
>>109536592thats one of the keyboards i never actually bought for my collection. enjoy.
>>109536415ive sold model ms with cut non detachable cords from recyclers for $15-20
