>portable
those portable air conditioners suck
>eurokeks actually believe their dehumidifier is an air conditionerquite sad how many of them defend this retardation.
>>109522271stop calling them portable air conditioners, they are dehumidifiers. when you call them air conditioners you contribute to the problem.
the tubes bro
>>109522271he was right, why did no one listen to him?
>>109522271>those portable air conditioners suckand blow !>>109522279>when you call them air conditioners you contribute to the problem. It blows chilled air.
>>109522296they fear the truth he speaks
>>109522279a dehumidifier is the same thing. same machinery same process.all you have to do is route the airflow correctly and alluvasudden, cold air go in hot air go out
>>109522273their retarded governments make this the only real option for most people
>>109522252How is that not the definition of portable? The user can just take it and put it in a different room at any time.
>>109522252Europe is like a different planet.
>>109522421>Europe is like a different planet.why are retards such as you and OP saying such things about AC?you think we do not have split system ACs in Eu?of course we do.
if you move it without having break up the cement and call in 6 illegal mexicans to lift it, it's portable
>>109522271>please pay between 1x-2x the cost of a portable air conditioner in maintenance costs for a real aircon system in a house you don't own goy>without even factoring in the huge cost of installation, the cost of the unit itself etcI won't argue that they're actually good, but its fucking obvious that people are going to buy and enjoy portable AC units instead of dropping huge amounts more money on the real deal.
>>109522466the window versions are much better than the "portable" versions
>>109522429The government literally forbids installing an AC on a bunch of shitty old buildingsin the middle of the city. Well, it's not like YOU could install one anyway because you're renting that 100 year old shithole.
>>109522504Yes, but you can't buy or use them in Europe because we have non standard meme windows.
>>109522558So install a split unit or a proper window that works with a window unit
>>109522657see >>109522547And no, there are no windows like that in europe
>>109522558Get new windows then, I don't see what's so hard about this. They're probably single-paned shit anyway.
>>109522687Buddy I spent like a minute searching and found an American company with a UK storefront that sells American style windows
>>109522308>It blows chilled air.... which is then immediately counteracted by the heat from the compressor being indoors, unlike an air conditioner where the compressor is outdoors.
>>109522379all air conditioners are dehumidifiers, but not all dehumidifiers are air conditionersa dehumidifier like OP posted has the compressor indoors, the heat of which counteracts the cooling ability of the unit (not to mention noise).an air conditioner has the compressor outdoors.
>>109522816>>109522273The one in OP's image has two tubes, meaning it blows the heat outside. Obviously still not as efficient as a proper system, but it's an AC.
>>109522252Beats Finnish AC
>>109522547>The government literally forbids installing an AC on a bunch of shitty old buildingsin the middle of the city. Most buildings dont have that issue, you are a retard.>Well, it's not like YOU could install one anyway because you're renting that 100 year old shithole.I have AC, seethe burger.
>>109522714That's literally illegal (probably)
>>109522857Couldn't this kind of be considered geothermal cooling?
>>109523012It is without the proper certifications, American Windows are American certified and those certs aren't recognized in Yurop (well I was checking for the UK specifically but I imagine it's the same deal elsewhere). There are exceptions like >>109522775 though where they are American windows but intended for sale in a European market so they have the proper certs
>>109522271Such an actual fucktarded belief. Those with at least one hose work just fine. You hear that you shouldn't use them from dweebs like the guy in the pic because for them somehow power efficiency also plays a role.Newsflash: the portable will not make your room reach 20 Celsius LESS. It will do it.
>>109522816Sure, the unit might be 50 Celsius. So it just has to work harder to make the room reach its target 20. Shucks for the unit I guess. It has to work harder like a little toaster, but why should I care?>electricity costsI don't care if I per year have to pay $20 more if I can delay getting a full unit for many years.
>>109522843>it blows the heat outsidewhich creates negative pressure indoors, causing heat to come back in from outside and (once again) fighting against itself, once again unlike a (real) air conditioner.A real air conditioner has the condenser and compressor outdoors and the vaporizer indoors. Less noise and heat indoors and no issue with pressure differences.just because they put an extra fan on the dehumidifier to blow hot outdoors does not change that it is sad cope. it is not an air conditioner. I am sorry my eurobros have to suffer under these delusions and their garbage dehumidifiers.
>>109523108I'm cool that euros are happy with their dehumidifiers. But they need to stop calling them air conditioners because despite conditioning the air, they are not "real" air conditioners, just like a transexual is not a "real" woman.
>>109522504cool but a lot of apartments won't let you install them they cost more, are more of a headache and the portable ones just werk?
>>109523246It has two tubes to the outside. I think one feeds ambient air and the other exhausts hot air. There is no negative pressure indoors. This thing is basically the same as those single unit ACs that you put in windows, only much less efficient because heat still radiates out of those tubes..Pic unrelated
>>109522308>blows chilled airYes, compressor dehumidifiers are air conditioners that don't vent outside.
>>109523246Two tubes means neutral air pressure, numbnuts. You're not very bright are you
>>109523246>argues like it's a single-hose unit>when op's pic shows the guy actually knows about the problem with single-hose units and diy'd a second hose into itare you an ai bot that just didn't look at the picture or have you just heard about the issue with single-hose units but don't know enough to know that dual-hose units don't have this problem?
>>109522271So does the "man" in that pic.
>>109524097that picture is a bit sensational, onlookers don't know what lead up to the arrest, maybe the police have been tracking the guy and actually have some evidence that the bat may have been bought to use in a crime
>>109522271dual-hose units are fine, it's the single-hose ones which suck. and yes, diy'ing a second hose onto a single-hose unit is functionally the same as buying a more expensive dual-hose unit, the second hose is just an upsell tactic and is otherwise completely the same as a single-hose unit. personally i don't think single-hose units should even be sold since they're shit for really no reason other than to raise the price of dual-hose units
>>109524336They're british, they know full well that the cops don't have shit.
>>109522252dayum gurl got legs
>>109524336So true, just like they had been tracking that one bloke for years saying he’d be stabbed and they exactly that that was his copout reply to get away, and he totally didnt bleed out from stab wounds then and there
>>109522834you're retarded
>>109522252What's the cardboard box for?
>>109524435Isolates air intake so it does not reduce pressure inside the room (which would then mean hot air from outside leaks through cracks). Increases effectiveness.
>mfw living in touristy historical town where the municipality bans all visible ACs from buildings. You can't even get modern PVC windows. They have to be historically accurate wood frame ones.
>>109524435to add a second hose to a single hose unit.to roughly explain it, AC's have two radiators, a hot side and a cold side, with a heat pump between them which to keep it short, moves heat from the cold side to the hot side, making the cold side colder and the hot side hotter.a single hose unit exhausts heat from the hot side through the hose to outside the room, but the air that is exhausted is drawn from inside the room itself, so replacement air is forced in such as from under a door, which won't be cooled air so the efficiency isn't great.the second hose of a dual hose unit instead draws that air from outside through a second hose, so the hot side is totally isolated from the room's air, which is more efficient.what op's pic shows is someone attaching a box around the intake vent for the hot side, and attaching a hose to that, effectively turning a single hose unit into a dual hose unit.
>>109522943No he's correct. The way city regulations work in Europe is that it's not just actual historical buildings that are impacted. Even surrounding recent buildings have to follow many restriction, such as no visible AC, to keep the overall "feeling" of the neighborhood authentic.
>>109522252>Bought portable AC unit for 260 quid>Draws air in from the back, compress it and cools it with propane or something. >Emitts cold air. >Hot air exits via a hose through a sealed window. >Room stays at a nice <20C all summer.Nah, this shit is nice. I get why Americans like this. Portable units are kinda noisy, but damn, it's like actually cold.
>>109524453Just /diy/ a feature box to cover it so they think its a planter or some shit
>>109522252The issue I have is after installing a split unit in my commie block balcony I can actually hear the outdoor unit even through the concrete wall, it's not superloud but noticeable, eapecially at night. Currentlly living is some shithole city so the the outside noise is already huge, but if I ever move to a house outside in country side then I need a solution of somekind to block/isolate the noise going from the unit to the building.
>>109522466>>please pay between 1x-2x the cost of a portable air conditioner in maintenance costs for a real aircon system in a house you don't own goyI don't see the issue here, my family installed AC in every rental apartment and house we went through, when it was time to leave, we just took it down and brought it it wherever we moved. Depending on the landlord, we either had to patch out the hole, or tape some nylon on top of it because next tenant likely wants to install AC too
>>109524336>evidenceFrom what I've heard, in the UK they tend to arrest people before they start to gather any evidence. That video by Gamers Nexus on some guy having been arrested after having legally bought some old Sega devkits comes to mind. Unless I'm misremembering it, they held him until they realized they couldn't make a case against him.
Another issue (which anyone rarely talks about) in Europe where there are many old buildings is that the ventilation in in these building is often minimum or non existent, so installing an AC in such a building while at same time having pvc windoss tighly shut, literally just cools and recirculates stale air in the room. Trying to sleep in an apartment like that is just horrible.
Just live somewhere that never goes above 25 C (77F for you africans still using that archaic system).
>>109524517you may be right, but i still don't like reacting to headlines and similar behaviour, like yelling at a cop for arresting a guy holding a packaged baseball bat as if they know immediately that's all that is going on.
>>109522547I live in Croatia. I had an AC since 1976 a Serbian Ei Niš one, then years later we switched to the Samsung one I still use it. Both work. I am considering switching the Samsung one to something newer that can heat at -15°c
>>109524562>ah, but what about this other entirely different thing?!
>>109524493like some kind of fake storage box/chicken coop, with wooden doors that have very coarse meshes on them for air flow. someone's probably done that but you haven't noticed since that's the point
>>109524541There so many fixes for this. The simplest one but one that causes noise, simply leave the window in the up position and tilt it. Open all the room doors while sleeping. Install door vents causes lowers. This is like the cheapest option but massively increases noise pollution if you have anyone else in the house. Then the expensive options are something like this : Vaillant recoVAIR VAR 60/2 D decentralized ventilation system with alternating airflow and heat recovery You lose maybe 7% of the temperature but the air gets recirculated. I have 4 of these RecoVAIR units in my house. I have zero mold and my CO2 meters rarely go above 600 ppm
>>109522466>Huge costsLike what 1000€ for a good AC can be as low as 400€ these daysAnd 200€~1000€ for installation costs. You pay that much rent in like 2~3 months. ACs aren't expensive you are cheap.
>>109524611most things seem cheap when you only consider it on its' own
>>109523246Did you even watch the video you linked? Single tube units create negative pressure. Double tube is much more efficient and creates no such problem.
>>109524594Anything but a proper system with mechanical air ventilation and heat recovery is not a solution (like opening a window lol). And getting that installed is way more expensive than just getting an ac
>>109524650Thats because it is. Don't eat shitty foods for a few months and instead get yourself cooling so you don't feel like absolute dogshit for 3 months every year.People in general are abysmally bad with money. Boomers are especially hilarious. My mother would cut the fucking kitchen sponges to save money, turn of all the lights, do all kinds of things that physically inconvienced her instead of say working an extra hour at work for the a lot more money to offset everything.Same with old people and ACs they'd rather melt and die then spend 20€ on electricity to let the AC run 24/7, but they'll buy some fucking gadget in Lidl for 20€ in a heart beat and never use it or go to a restaurant and spend 20€.My father bought some fucking Zepter Therapy lamp for like 1000€ todays money but bitched like it was the end of the world if I left some light on for the 20 minutes I wasn't in my room.People really never put this shit on paper. In summer I simply say I won't order out at all and my overall costs stay the same yet the AC runs day and night.
>>109524693One again you're wrong. It's simply a question of how much you're willing to spend. Having a small draft via windows when the AC is running or your house is heating is literally enough. You will however increase your bill by like 10% by doing that and decrease the cooling/heating performance by just as much. How many years is it going to take for a heat recovery vent system to pay off vs simply having windows open and leaving the air circulation natural air convection because of temperature differences.
>>109524711Keeping the windows open is not an option in negative winter temperatures and also in summer heatwaves. It's definitely cheaper just to buy a simple desk fan and 'cool' your house that way.
>>109524097>MyLordBebokill yourself
>>109522714>just install new windowsHoly fucking delusional
Avoid these threads. They are posted on purpose for this reason.
>>109525058
>>109522414>governments make this the only real option for most peopleI live in Europe. You can buy AC split got like 500$ including installment. No government permission or anything required, just call the company and you have AC in few days. What are you talking about?
>>109522466>maintenance costs for a real aircon ductless splits require pretty much no maintenance (maybe a deep clean every 5-10yr f you wanna be fancy) and rarely break, while these portable ewaste units are completely unrepairable low quality slop that will need to be frequently replacedthis makes no sense.
>>109525171There are places where the government straight up forbids installing AC units on buildings, and there are (lots of) places where you can only do it with a permission (which you probably won't get) or else they may fine you and make you remove it (this actually happens). m
>>109525187>that will need to be frequently replaced>this makes no sense. My portable AC has been working for like 5 years now and I just clean its filters every year.
>>109524567>he boughted an assmung ac...why? chinese stuff from midea is both cheaper and infinitely better quality.
I don't care about efficiency, I don't care about overall room temp, I just put one of those portable units behind me pointing in my general direction with the exhaust hose out the window and chill on my couch. It keeps me nice and cool.
>>109525205and the 3 splits at my home have been working with barely any maintenance for 25 years without a single failure...your point?even if your portable ewaste manages to last 25 years the gap in electricity costs you would've endured in that time alone would be so high it wouldn't even be funnythere's just no scenario where it makes sense unless you really cannot install a split for whatever reason (very rare btw)most people buying these (yourself included) are just retarded at maths, if you think it makes sense to go for a portable ac that's just half the price of a proper split when you will pay that difference in electricity costs alone in the first few years of ownership i seriously do not understand how you can be intelligent enough to live a normal life.
>>109524341Most dual hose units here are just two exhaust hoses
>>109525217>i don't care how much money it wastesfine... but in this case, why wouldn't you treat yourself to a proper ac that performs better, is more silent, and less likely to break?yet another scenario where portable ac don't make sense, it's like a milionare preferring a bike over a luxury car.
>>109525202>There are places where the government straight up forbids installing AC units on buildingsThen why are there AC units installed in my neighborhood hood? And the neighborhood next to it and so on?You said that most people can't install AC yet I live here and literally never heard about government banning people from installing something on a building you own, what sense does that make? Can you name these places where supposedly most people live where government banned installing AC?>inb4 you confused government with landlord you rent from/HOA or some other bullshit
>>109525236>...your point? You claimed:>that will need to be frequently replacedAnd my point is that my portable AC has been working without issues for 5 years, so it seems unlikely. What timespan are you talking about?
>>109525171>500$ including installmentFucking bullshit.I just bought a single Mitsubishi unit (not top of line) for my commie block living room and it cost $1750 with installation.A Gree unit would have cost $1150. It doesn't get cheaper than that. For reference, minimum wage after taxes is around $700.
>>109525248these historical places where you cannot install stuff to the outside do exist but are like where 0.1% of the european population livesit's not bullshit, just blown way out of proportion by americunts.I live in southern italy and the outside of every apartment is full of external ac units everywhere, people do seem to overestimate the electricity costs and rarely use them but everyone has a proper ac installed.
>>109525242that's completely retarded
>>109525258>What timespan are you talking about?...so you didn't even read?I said the splits at my house have gone 25 years without a single failure, most decent quality ac units will go at least 20 years of use, a split ac breaking sooner than that would be the exception rather than the rule, and even then, they are easily repaired.5 years is nothing, even if your portable ac lasts 10 or 15 years, that 2x saving already goes down the drain at that point compared to a proper ac that will last you double, and this isn't even considering the insane gap in energy efficiency.
>>109525260Ok it was without installation. With installation, the cheapest are like 800$. Of course this is worst tier and only one room so you gotta pay a little more for something for the entire house.https://www.mediaexpert.pl/agd-male/do-domu/klimatyzatory-scienne/klimatyzator-split-pompa-ciepla-powietrze-powietrze-gorenje-pandora-pan26in-kg-pan26out2-kg-z-usluga-montazu
>>109525247Because I was in an electronics store and saw a small AC unit for 299 eurobucks (down from 399€ because of being a discontinued product) and I tested it and found it to be powerful enough to cool my person so I took it home and it has been my friend for 4 or 5 years now.
>>109525248Nobody said most places don't allow them, that comes from you making shit up. This does affect a lot of people though. Also for one, lots of people rent, so installing anything is impossible, and two, even if you own your place, the government or the rules of the apartment may forbid it to install an AC without a permission.>>109525266>historical placesThere are buildings with special government protections as designated "historical monuments" where I live, which in practice means they're old ass fucking buildings in shitty that you aren't allowed to modify because some retarded boomers in the government said so. The downtown area is full of buildings like that.
>>109525275>...so you didn't even read?>I said the splits at my house have gone 25 yearsYeah, but your original claim was about portable AC and that's what I was talking about. It's a good thing that your split is working well, but that's kind of besides the point.
>>109525285>I have so much money that I don't give a fuck about electricity bills but I couldn't pass out on a huge deal for the cheapest sloppiest solution i could have...yeah this still makes absolutely no sense, and this reply did absolutely nothing to address my point.
>>109525217I used to have one and it cooled well but they're super inefficient. They constantly use 1000-1500W+ power while they are running. Using them all day and night would bankrupt me because of ridiculous energy prices and policies.
>>109525286>Nobody said most places don't allow them, that comes from you making shit up.>>109522414>their retarded governments make this [portable AC] the only real option for most people>>109525202>There are places where the government straight up forbids installing AC units on buildings>you can only do it with a permission (which you probably won't get)>Also for one, lots of people rentWhere does the government bans renters from installing AC? It's literally between you and landlord.I used to rent a place with AC for years.
>>109525297literally just find me a single example of a portable unit in service for 25 years.oh wait you still couldn't even if it was possible because every normal person that buys one throws it into the trash 2 years later after being driven mad by the noise and seeing their electricity bill triple after just a week of use.
>>109525304I don't use it 24/7, Anon. I live in a relatively cool country. Maybe on the 30 hottest days of the year on average, spread across summer. And not at night.
>>109525171For a private house, sure, but to have one intalled on the outside wall of an apartment, a permission will be required in most places, usually from the owner of the building (could be local council, or a private owner, or residents themselves), also in cases where the building is historical, protected etc, another permission for outside modification will be required.
>>109525327>maybe a month a yearhere in southern italy, before the most recent heatwaves these past few years people used to run the ac for way less than a month, like a couple of days at bestand despite the general population being on the poor side, we've all had proper split ac systems installed for at least 3 decades alreadythis does once again not address anything, if you're so rich that electricity bills don't matter at all, you would normally always seek the best possible solution even if it's only for a day, let alone an entire month every year.just admit you're actually a retarded poorfag that can't do math and move on. A rich person isn't renting a trabant because "it's just for a day"
>>109525365It's not even that expensive. Every single poorfag that I know has a latest iphone, macbook and air pods, if they can afford applel things, they can surely afford a one time ~1200 euro expenditure for a basic split unit.
3 kW is my limit - without paying electricity company for additional fees and upgrading wiring ~100 m^2 house, so low power ACs for 20 m^2 probably won't be enough seems I'm fuckedoutside part of ACs go around ~7000W, inside part (which can be more than one) ~ 2500Wthat thing probably won't go full blast all the time, but still seems sketchyAC alone might trip breaker, even without all the other appliances in home
>>109525316I see, my bad. Well that's not my post, and it's definitely not true in my country. It may be true in others, I don't know.>It's literally between you and landlord>just install an AC as a gift for your landlord whose apartment you're renting for a huge portion of your monthly salary>they will be happy they can rent it to others for even more money later, doesn't that make you happy too?Totally solid and reasonable logic, holy fucking shit.
>>109522346Has he destroyed his career with that spergout?
>>109525413>low power ACs for 20 m^2 probably won't be enough you're probably fine, especially if you don't turn them on all at the same time, power consumption to mantain the setpoint temperature after it is reached initially is usually less than 500w per unit>outside part of ACs go around ~7000W, inside part (which can be more than one) ~ 2500Wuh... you should understand that such rating is usually the actual cooling power provided and not the actual power consumption, which is listed separately, we have had a 5 kw unit with a 3 kw contract and it never trips the breaker.if your ac has a SEER (or scoop i don't remember which one is for cooling) of 4 (which is the average these days) that means that you need to divide that 7 kw cooling capacity by 4, an ac that provides 7 kw of cooling with a seer of 4 will only use 1,75 kw peak, the full spec sheet should also list the actual peak consumption.I understand where the confusion comes from but yeah it doesn't work like that you're fine lol
>>109525328How is that an European government doing exactly? Also if you have an apartment in a shared building then usually you have balcony where you can put whatever.>>109525417>>just install an AC as a gift for your landlord whose apartment you're renting for a huge portion of your monthly salary>>they will be happy they can rent it to others for even more money later, doesn't that make you happy too?>Totally solid and reasonable logic, holy fucking shit. So, where the supposed European government regulation comes in? Because that sounds like everywhere not just Europe.
>>109525457>the full spec sheet should also list the actual peak consumption.here for example, the not so efficient daikin ac i currently have in my room, lists a maximum possible power draw of 1.05kw but the actual nominal cooling power that is printed on the label (and what the 25 in the model name is also refering to) is 2.5 kw, with a maximum peak cooling power of 2.8kw.you'd think it would be very close to tripping the breaker when it's running on a 3 kw contract but it doesn't, the actual consumption is below a kilowatt at all times and once it's only drawing <300w at the setpoint it can be run togheter with the 5 kw ac that is cooling the living room + kitchen + the 3 kw unit in my sister's bedroomalso, upgrading to 4kw which also gives you like a 5+kw peak for quite some time is usually not that expensive, just upgrade if it doesn't work out, but it should.
>>109525479It's law passed by the government? In my country I need permission from residents (usually 51% ) to install anything on the outside wall (or make any modifications to it, so putting an outside unit on balcony floor is fine but then attaching piping and drilling a hole through the wall needs permission). Technically this also applies to closed balconies.
>>109525457>>109525492thanks for explainingmhmm, I should get an AC then, after current shortage/heatwave nonsense calms down
>>109525413a lot of people think AC's use more power than they do, because they see things like "7kW split system" and think it will draw 7kW of electricity when running at full power. they don't, that 7kW is actually referring to how much heat it can move, and heatpumps can move heat energy faster than it consumes electricity energy, usually by a factor of a few times (depending on various factors such as target and outdoor air temperatures).people get confused because they're used to kW referring to electricity, especially when it comes to electrical appliances, but kW is just a measure of power in general, not just electricity. some places advertise AC cooling capacity using BTU (british thermal unit) instead of kW perhaps to avoid confusion but probably for historical reasons as well
>>109525545>after current shortage/heatwave nonsense calms downyes, that is the most reasonable thing to do, you'll still end up with efficient heat pumps to use in the winter (great first step at getting rid of gas which is only gonna get more expensive) and the next summer isn't going to be any cooler than the last one anyways.of course there's no point paying for the premium now when summer is over in a couple of weeks.
>>109522687Make a window adapter insert using plywood etc. Not at all difficult and you can saw it by hand if poor. A hammer and a hand saw are pretty basic.
>>109522414>their retarded governments make this the only real option for most people why are you lying?
>>109525562personally, before understanding how heat pumps worked, i was also confused by the fact that an electric heater is already 100% efficient and my knowledge of the basic thermodynamic laws.I unironically thought ac units that could do both heat and cold had resistive heating built in, as stupid as that sounds, yes.this is one odd case where not being a clueless retard made this stuff less intuitive, "no what you mean an heatpump is more efficient than resistive heating it's not possible that would be over 100% efficiency and thermodynamics doesn't allow that"then of course, after reading about it, the concept that moving heat uses less power than creating it instantly made sense.the fact that resistive heating is the only electrical device 100% efficient and heatpumps are still upto 4x more efficient at it really tells you how good of a technology it really is.
>>109524659>>109524312>>109523883>>109523531Because the exhaust tube has a fan motor that pushes hot air out and the intake hose relies on passive intake there will always be some negative air pressure although it is a lot better.
>>109525591oh i forgot another thing that made it confusing:"so... this brand new heat pump technology everyone's recently talking about is already present in every split ac that has been installed for the past 30+ years and people are only now discovering that it's a thing?"apparently this is one part of AC technology where americunt is behind, their AC units just didn't come with a reverse valve for heating until recently, while every minisplit in europe has had it for decades already.the 30 year old ac at your grandma's house is a perfectly efficient heat pump but she just doesn't know and will keep burning gas for heating.why there isn't more public awareness pushed on this is beyond me.the government should be running adverts that state "gas is getting expensive, you already have a heatpump so use it retard"
>>109525591yea, that is another point of confusion as well. i need to teach my roommate now that he's got an AC in his room that he should be using the AC for heating instead of his resistive heater, as it'll be more efficient (and also teach him that he should use his ceiling fan in winter mode for additional efficiency gains but that'd probably be harder to convince him of since he hates using fans).saying they "move heat" is a simple and intuitive way to describe it, like it's not difficult to imagine moving heat from outside a room into a room could be more efficient than turning electricity directly into heat, though it's still not exactly intuitive that you can move heat from outside when outside is cooler than the room. if someone is determined to understand how it works the concepts aren't rocket science, the mechanism is pretty simple really, but not instantly intuitive if you've never looked into it
>>109522252I am getting real AC installed soon, which will basically make me the king of europe. make way, peasants.
>>109525508>It's law passed by the government? In my country I need permission from residents (usually 51% ) to install anything on the outside wallThis is normal everywhere in the world, not just Europe.
>>109525591>this is one odd case where not being a clueless retard made this stuff less intuitivethis is a common trap that can apply to many things. it has a few names such as "know enough to be dangerous", "mt. stupid", "dunning-kruger effect". it's really easy to think you know more about something than you really do if you know a little about it compared to if you know nothing about it. it's usually mentioned in a derogatory way but it affects everyone whether they know it or not
>>109525630>it's still not exactly intuitive that you can move heat from outside when outside is cooler than the room"air contains heat that can be extracted as long as the temperature is above -273 degrees celsius""-10c still contains a fuckton of heat compared to absolute zero (-273)"that worked for me as an explaination, i think a retard could understand it too but i get what your point is.>i need to teach my roommate now that he's got an AC in his room that he should be using the AC for heating instead of his resistive heateryeah we probably wasted hundreds of euros down the drain because the ac remote had dead batteries and a resistive heater was right there and i thought it must be the same thing efficiency-wise. if autists have trouble figuring it out there's no way the average retard is going to get it on his own.billions of euros and tonnes of CO2 emissions are being wasted because people aren't being informed of the possibility they likely already have, I shouldn't have to hear about this through watching technolgy connections.
>>109525671
>>109522429I have never seen that here in sweden. In fact im the first person I've seen with an AC at home. The only other places where I've seen ACs are in stores and offices.
>>109525671yea, if the air outside is below freezing (0C) they might think there's little heat energy in it, but that's only true from a human perspective standpoint, it's still hundreds of degrees hotter than absolute zero. 0C air has plenty of energy in it in an objective sense.i watches the tech connections videos, but for me my most surprising take-away from them was how this was much less known than i thought, at least for americans since that's his focus. i am an autist with little social experience so i don't really know what is or isn't common knowledge, but i at least assumed someone buying AC to install in their home would know about it's most basic functions
>>109522547>renting that 100 year old shitholeYes, and unlike your shithole, this one has real walls.
>>109525703>place with cold climate>people don't install ac because there's no need for cooling in the summer despite the fact that a split ac system is still the best option for heatingyup, just another case of people not understanding heat pumps i guess.doesn't sweden also have very cheap/green electricity? I'm pretty sure that's the reason electric cars have a 90+% market share there.
>>109525708>i at least assumed someone buying AC to install in their home would know about it's most basic functionspeople absolutely do know they can use the AC for heating purposes, they just don't know that it is the most effcient way to heat.most people have gas heating, they see no reason to use their ac with electricity when "gas is cheaper", it's only starting to click with some people now because gas prices are increasing.after all the AC instruction manual (which nobody has ever read anyway, only autists read manuals) tells you it can do heating but it doesn't say anything about how efficient that heating is, you'd have to read (and understand) the spec sheet or european efficiency label for that.
>>109525171It's almost as if Europe is comprised of multiple countries with different laws. Ameritard mind cannot comprehend this.
>>109525742there isn't a single european country where AC installation is flat out prohibited though, that's the thing.it's only a problem in some specific parts of some specific cities for preservation of historical buildings
>>109525735personally i would consider knowing how efficient something that is likely to be a major consideration for energy costs is is part of "basic functions". like i do know it's normal for people to put off heating/cooling or use more conservative targets because they have non-trivial costs to run them, so i would have imagined efficiency is a basic deciding factor when purchasing one (both getting one at all and also which one to get), but somehow that doesn't seem to be the case, which confuses my autistic brain
>>109525700I've done the math here several times, but even after our benevolent overlords stopped literally doubling the price of electricity via taxes, while doubling the price of firewood via refusing to buy from Russia, it's still cheaper to burn wood than to use our heat pump to heat the house. Granted, it's a shitty old heat pump, and with a new one it would probably tip the scales now, but it's still pretty close and it's a very good idea to have a backup when you don't live in the bug hive.
>>109524698>but bitched like it was the end of the world if I left some light on for the 20 minutes I wasn't in my room.My parents are the same lol. They grew up with halogen lamps and so they can't understand that modern LEDs consume nothing while providing a lot of light. It's the same with AC: back in the days it was actually expensive (at least here in Europe) but nowadays basically anyone could afford it if you save for a few months/a year.
>>109524698>bitched like it was the end of the world if I left some light on for the 20 minutes I wasn't in my room.my parents were like that as well, had it drilled into me to turns lights off, but this was also back in the incandescent days, a typical bedroom light (1) used 75W, these days you can basically light an entire house well enough with 75W
>>109525786>burning wood is cheapersure, if you don't count what it costs to your health...it also (at least in theory) produces a fuckton of co2 which will in turn increase that energy cost in the future (of course we all know this isn't a real factor as the actual problem is taylor swift's private jet but still)if using an heat pump costs 25-30% more i'd still choose to pay more for the heat pump.also don't you have to acquire the wood somehow? no idea how that works, maybe you just have it delivered to you somehow, but i know people that have to go and acquire it on their own which also costs time, electricity is delivered instantly for free through your power lines, which is very convenient.you also have to store that wood somewhere taking up space and so on.
>>109522943Well already 16% of appartments are owned by the state and won't get any AC. But the number is actually higher because in this kind housing complex you also have private owned appartments under the same rules of no AC. So already it's like 20% of housing that'll never get AC.
>>109525171>What are you talking about?Well in GERMANY you are by law not allowed to install a split system permanently yourself without a professional company doing the install. This is based on some eco laws because the gasses inside those machines are bad for the environment and to install them someone needs to handle that gas (filling the system, finetuning etc). Also, most people are renting in that country so they need to go through a ton of paperwork first and most likely still get it denied because installing this involves drilling a hole into the precious wall. If they get caught with an illegal AC it's grounds for a rent termination and everyone already is scared to lose their apartment because there are next to no apartments available right now. The units themselves could technically be had for as little as 600 eurobucks but since they MUST be installed professionally those companies fucking scalp the absolute piss out of people. In the end it's a 3000+ euros job which you can imagine most just can't get done for a couple weeks of heat. Up until now people managed just fine but in the last couple years summers got more and more brutal more frequently and the infrastructure simply isn't built for that climate so everyone is slowly realizing that they need to change something on their homes. Since perma installed ACs are usually out of the equation due to costs most people simply opt for the mobile AC which is cheap and legal. There are also portable split systems now but those may still cause trouble if your neighbor is being anal about the noise and cries about it towards the land owner or if you life in an enriched area where gentlemen love to do surprise visits and take souvenirs because you need to leave your window open for the pipe between the two split AC parts. The cheapest and least trouble are the mono bloc systems like in the OP but they are inefficient as fuck. OP shows a popular 2-pipe mod that increases the efficiency somewhat.
>>109525790>back in the days it was actually expensivethe r410a inverter hitachi units my parents installed 25 years ago (when led lighting still wasn't really a thing i think) are only like 30% less efficient than a low end/midrange ac you can buy today, the big effciency jump came when inverter units replaced on-off systems but that was ages ago.from what i've seen it's also never raccomended to replace an old ac unit for a new one, the time it would take for the new ac to save enough power for it to re-pay itself is usually more than a decade, lighting has seen a much more drastic improvement in efficency than ac did, i really don't think the overestimation of power consumption comes from that.
>>109525805>produces a fuckton of co2I am not running a TOKAMAK fusion reactor. Burning wood does not "produce" any CO2. Wood is grown by using solar energy to pull CO2 from the air, turning it into hydrocarbons, which I can then burn to return CO2 to the air, and the cycle repeats. So yes, you delusional retard, if you want to make a problem out of increasing CO2 in the atmosphere, burning hydrocarbons that are have been sequestered underground (like kerosene from mined oil used to fuel Taylor Swift's private jet, and produce the electricity that you apparently believe magically appears in your wall) is your boogeyman.
>>109525821>Well in GERMANY you are by law not allowed to install a split system permanently yourself without a professional company doing the install. This is based on some eco laws because the gasses inside those machines are bad for the environment and to install them someone needs to handle that gas (filling the system, finetuning etc). That's true for many countries for ACs where you need to put refrigerant yourself. Google AI claims that in USA you also need a licensed professional too. (EPA 608 certification)>Also, most people are renting in that country so they need to go through a ton of paperwork first and most likely still get it denied because installing this involves drilling a hole into the precious wallIn no country you can just drill a hole in a place you rent without permission though.
>>109524698>rather melt and die then spend 20€ on electricity to let the AC run 24/7a monobloc AC (like most people use in europ because cheap) pulls more than 1kw from the plug. now do a simple calculation. 1kwh = 40 cents. 40 cents x 24h = 9.60€ per day for the AC alone. either you inexplicably have 2 day summers or you're talking out your ass. or maybe you're a burger who pays fuck all for electricity.
>>109525752I agree, but in Germany your landlord is not going to let you install AC (and why would you waste your money on someone's apartment). Even if you're a homeowner, your neighbors can give you shit if you install it. That's why everyone is buying those Midea portasplit ACs.
>>109525853>and produce the electricity that you apparently believe magically appears in your wall65% of the energy production of my country already comes from renewables, the same is true for most other european countries, the rest comes from gas.but sure let's pretend an heat pump is going to run on 100% oil and that the % of sustainable energy isn't going to continue increasing.you haven't addressed the health concerns which was my main point and only disputed what was secondary, retard.
>>109525863Don't forget that this would only take one AC for one room into account. Things would get spicy fast if you dared to cool down an entire house.
>>109525878Most Euro countries just buy nuclear energy from France
>>109525878Sure, I'll let you move those goalposts. I am not lighting a fire on my floor like you do in India. I am getting my 100% renewable energy from a little chamber with an air inlet that pulls from outdoors and an outlet that goes out the top of my house, and I imagine the wheat and trees in the general vicinity of my house are happy about it but I haven't asked them.
>>109525869the portasplit is still 100x better than the average porable slop at least, but I still think spending 1000€ on one of those things is very retarded, very sad that it's the most reasonable option in such circumstances.>Even if you're a homeowner, your neighbors can give you shit if you install itI don't understand why this even exists as a problem, the only thing i could think about is the noise the external unit makes but even ac units from decades ago are usually very quiet, let alone modern ones.the cheap (less than a portasplit installation included) entry level daikin i recently got installed is so quiet that even at night you'd have to check if the fan is spinning to tell it is switched on.
>>109524321??? why do you weirdos want him to be a tranny so bad it's suspicious
>>109525709I'll take a soviet era concrete block over a musty dilapidated piece of crap that hasn't even been properly maintained yet the government thinks it's the fucking Colosseum and must be heckin' protected from ACs and proper windows (yes, you aren't allowed to install modern windows in them either).
>>109525892which doesn't change the fact that it is green energy, so?>>109525904i'm moving the goalposts? where? you're literally still not addressing what my main point was and i'm the one that's moving goalposts? kekw>burning wood is somehow renewable because the trees in the vicinity of my house will use that co2...this is bait, right?by that logic, driving a gasoline powered car is also renewable.
>>109525863They're also loud as fuck. You can't sleep while they're running.
>>109525863ACs don't run at full power all the time, once the room has cooled down it only needs to run occasionally or at a minimal power (if it's an inverter type) to maintain the target temperature. how efficient that is depends on how well-insulated your room is (and if there's any heat-generating things in it, like how many people, if there's things like computers or other electric devices being used in it, etc)
>>109525919>don't understand why this even exists as a problemIt's not reasonable behavior, no need to search for a reason. People are fucking vile and stir up shit just for the heck of it.
>>109525884If you own a house there is literally no reason to not install permanent split.Portable AC is for people who rent and use it for like few days a year. (like me)
>>109525938Why don't you tell me where you imagine wood comes from?
>>109525951hint: most houses are also rented.a typical house in germany is 600k+
>>109525964All the people I know who live in a house own it. Renters live in apartments because they want to be close to city. So it must be just your country thing.
>>109525811you can always put the external part of AC split onto your balcony, you dumb fucks. The problems you describe exist only in head of retarded burgers.
>>109525970>most people do thing>aLl ThE pEoPlE i KnOw DoN't Do ThInG

>>109525984Ok. Quick search then. In my country:>In Poland, about 87.2% of the population own their homeIn Europe in general:>About 68% of people in the European Union own their homesThis includes aparments too and I imagine renting is more popular for apartments not houses. But I can't find data that easily.
>>109525959>yeah that co2 is becoming a tree againdo i really need to explain why this is a retarded logical fallacy? you're speaking as if 100% of co2 is recaptured by trees but of course if that were the case global warming wouldn't be a thingthis is like saying "natural gas causes 0 carbon emissions because it comes from nature!!!" yeah it literally only works out when you leave it there though.
>>109525854>where you need to put refrigerant yourselfYou don't need to put the refrigerant in yourself for the vast majority of mini split installations. Yet, it's fucking illegal in some EU countries to install them yourself.
>>109525959>heavy fuel oil doesn't ackchually emit CO2 and sulfur because the carbon and sulfur were already there like, naturally at one point
>>109526042you still have to do the tubing and shit yourself and the refrigerant will leak out into the atmosphere if it's not installed correctlythe fact that the refrigerant comes stored inside the machine doesn't change anything.
>>109526032>>109526057For someone so concerned about imaginary problems you sure are ignorant about your own beliefs. Natural gas, as well as oil, and really any other hydrocarbon we pull out of the ground, has been sequestered there and, in lieu of human activity, would remain sequestered there as good as forever. You pull coal out of the ground and burn it, you have now unsequestered that carbon and increased the total amount of carbon in circulation. Wood comes from trees. Trees we plant on large plots of land and then cut down to turn into furniture and fuel, after which we plant new trees that grow until they're ready to be cut down. No carbon is unsequestered that wouldn't have been via disease, weather, or wildfire, and we make sure the carbon is resequestered afterwards just as nature would have, except a bit faster. Perfectly carbon neutral. And this is why your government agrees with me, classifying biomass as a "green energy" source.
>>109522252holy shit they're becoming sentient

>>109526042The mini split systems that are closed circuit right when you buy them and can't be detached from another are perfectly legal in Europe. The ones that come in parts are only legal if installed by a paid company.
>>109525716Its hot in summer, hot enough to have trouble thinking. All fans immediately sell out in every store, but despite that stores refuse to stock AC.>doesn't sweden also have very cheap/green electricity? I'm pretty sure that's the reason electric cars have a 90+% market share there. No, it's very expensive because of taxes. The taxes for electricity actually costs more than the electricity itself. The reason why there are many electric cars is because people "care about the environment" and because there is less taxes on electric cars.
>>109522252Do Europoors really?
>>109526382cont. The cost of electricity increased so much that you could report it to get welfare for electricity, or in other words you get money back for some of the electricity you paid for.
>>109526065It will leak out when the unit is replaced too. This has nothing to do with it.
>>109526322It's worth noting that custom piping AC is also legal. Just not legal to install yourself, but majority of people would rather have someone do all the installation work anyway. It's not even that expensive.
>>109526446uhhhmm... no?you're supposed to recover the refrigerant and have it disposed/recycled/whatever before uninstalling an ac system, you don't just casually vent it outside the system
I'm not allowed to install radiant barriers or awnings or anything like that. But at least my electricity is subsidised, so I just blast the fuck out of my portable and go "owh, sorry" whenever I get told I'm using a bit too much energy. But I do want the heat to fuck off already.
>>109526592>you don't just casually vent it outside the system
>>109525622The intake->exhaust loop is separate from the room air it's cooling. It does not pull any air from the room. It can't be done with a single tube, only double tube does that.

>>109525622>the intake hose relies on passive intake there will always be some negative air pressurein a double hose configuration that intake is from outside, so in theory it has nothing to do with air pressure in the room.

>>109527825Eh, my single hose unit came with a raincoat style membrane you mount to your window, and that's how most people install them anyway. Putting two hoses through a zipper is approximately the same level of difficulty and stupid.
>>109527825>a dual hose further complicates things and takes up even more space?
>>109527825what he's saying is that he finds it weird that there's so few ready-made 2-hose units available, which means you wouldn't have to do makeshift shit like OP. what complicates things is having to source your own hose and coming up with a reliable method of sealing it.my one doesn't have the vent coming out the side, it's on the back like the exhaust, so chances are it's gonna be taking up the same space that the other hose already needs
>>109528278>two zipperoi that complicated innit

I honestly believe this whole "not allowed to have AC" is a lie for most countries. And in the 1 or two where it's a thing it's either limited to historical bulidings/neighbourhoods or would never be applied. Especially not with the heat we've been having.
>>109529910That's the problem with these eu vs us threads.US don't understand that laws don't really get applied much in EU. So they see a law that says "death penalty for walking too fast" and don't realize it actually means "300kmph speedlimit for e-scooters on sidewalks, one red dot for going over (6 dots means 20$ fine)"
>>109529910There is a ban in Londonistan. The official response to anyone questioning it is that there is no ban (for new buildings), there are simply regulations which prioritise alternative cooling methods such as opening your windows at night. Whether or not you are able to in a high crime rate area is not their concern. If you haven't tried passive cooling, you have no right to active cooling, and if you have tried it, it clearly works, so you still have no right to active cooling, and so either way it will be confiscated and you may be charged if there is a crime you can be found guilty of.You see, there's this thing called the heat island effect. The countryside holds moisture, this heats up, is released, and acts as a way to capture heat, a heat sink if you will. The city has no such moisture so absorbs all the heat the sun has to offer. Now if you add in AC units they will take the heat out of the buildings and dump it into the air. Does this create more heat? Well a heat island in a city is up to 10C worse than if there were no city. If you have AC used by most people in the city, the nighttime temperature is 1C worse, in the worst case, which is untenable. And then there are CO2 emissions as well, which as we know, places like Britain and France are high CO2 countries with their... combined wind and natural gas... and net export of nuclear power... well that's not the point!
>>109529133I'm waiting for a volcano to go off somewhere and put everyone into a mini ice age so they can stop bitching about climate change

>>109523246you know cooling a room with your definiton of an air conditioner also creates a pressure differential from the temperature drop which also draws in outdoor air
>>109534126>only downside really is that since the compressor is inside they can be louderas if the compressor doesn't also produce a fuckton of heat tanking efficiencysure noise is a big issue but it isn't the only difference from a regular split, far from it
>>109534210you forgot the lossess from the compressor making heat inside.it isn't housed on the outside unit like you'd think it is.
I just put huge buckets of ice under my bed. Works for the night. No AC chemicals, no real expenses, no dry air. I sleep well and enjoy fresh air and get a specific location of my house into good temperature.
>>109534854well i can't comment on inherent efficiency differences between having the compressor outside and having it outside, other things being equal, because i just don't know.now of course i know that things like compressors have inefficiency and inefficiency results in waste heat, and if the goal of cooling then waste heat contributes against efficiency, but i really don't know how much of a difference this makes, which is why i didn't comment on it (or rather, i didn't comment because it's not obvious that any difference is big enough to mention)

>>109534873where do you get the ice from?if you get it from your freezer, then you used an AC to make it, since a fridge/freezer is the exact same technology.>AC chemicalsthey're in a closed loop, meaning you aren't exposed to them at any point, this includes fridges/freezers which use the same kinds of refrigerants
>>109534859it CAN be on either side just fine. but sure most will go with indoor compressors to make the outside unit lighter. i guess that's ~ball park another 1/6th to that 1/6th extra energy that you use to move that heat outside? no i'm not going to bother with calculus for this one. and there are some other things, you could for instance maybe insulate the heat pipes somewhat more. but really in sum total the observation remains: all the effects together don't matter much and someone putting up one $150 solar panel somewhere pretty much overcompensates for all of these extra losses. it's barely a problem. thing works.
As an European I can always install AC, but Americans can't get rid of D.C.
>>109534899this but also making ice takes more extra heat pumpinglike, not just because ice has even less heat, it's becoming harder work per heat unit differential that you removethe fridge that makes this differential is also more likely to eventually struggle (to make buckets of ice) with its own heat in the same room (so it's even more of a differential from warm room to minus something C ice), although I guess you could vent THAT in reasonably cool nights many won't.if your target temp is actually say 24C doing it by AC-ing to the outside say 32C it's actually going to consume somewhat less energy than making a smaller quantity of -18C ice that also cools the room to 24C for exactly the same amount of time.

>>109534067I see what you did there, but that is actually the hot coil loop
>>109534980the freezer making ice is much smaller area being made cold, and has a way higher insulation value. The heat generated by doing so is vented into the air of the room, and thus the house. It effectively is vented "outside" as far as the fridge is concerned. Unless your entire home is hot enough to be basically uninhabitable, the fridge wont be struggling to make ice.
