We all know that Windows is, by default, bloated, slow, spyware, buggy, slop, etc.
But all of this is because of the userspace. What about the NT kernel?
Is windows NT better or worse than Linux kernel?

I recommend the dreamcast.

Depends on what you want, if want something robust -> windows and if you want lots of bells -> Linux.

nt is 30 years old at this point, no?
and linux has been continually developed since then

its like comparing a spitfire with an intel pentium 1 to a ryzen 9800 and asking which company makes better chips, based on this comparison

>its like comparing a spitfire with an intel pentium 1
ugh. brainfart. didnt proof-readmy post
disregard the spitfire part

NT is worse in everyway.

He is actually right. On Windows (NT), things like windows and compositor and graphical display are all part of the kernel.
On linux you have X11, X12, Xlibre, Wayland, Arcan, ...
Also other differences
>clone+exec versus CreateProcess
>NT has support for Process tokens, linux does not
>registry support is part of the kernel in NT
>Users in NT are more than just numbers (IDs) that then need auxiliary software to do anything with
>>
>>109526891
Your process
|
| CreateWindowA()
v
USER32.DLL
|
| converts ANSI -> Unicode, eventually CreateWindowExW
|
| NtUserCreateWindowEx(...)
v
---------------- kernel boundary ----------------
|
v
win32k.sys / win32kfull.sys / win32kbase.sys
|
| creates/manages HWND, window hierarchy,
| input state, window manager objects, etc.
v
Kernel-mode Win32 window manager

On windows, window manager is kernel mode which is why windows XP with full compositor is still faster than just bare X11 with no compositor. If you drag a window on really old hardware (or a VM with very low power settings), you will notice a lot more lag with X11 than with Windows XP

So you can have ads on your fridge?
Typically that were android/linux is used for, inshitification.
Look at the web for example it mostly runs on Linux yet the web has one of the worst dark patterns you ever see with technology.
And linux has enabled companies like google to get rich collect so much data like you wouldn't believe it, like android phones are tracking machines all over the web all over the world.
Now tell me any PC (Windows) that does this to that extend?
I will wait.

no, so you can run doom, obviously
fkn hell, you normies need to get taught everything

Windows NT was the name of an OS and distribution of windows 30 years ago, but NT is still the name of the kernel that windows uses today.
Hence why most win32 functions will eventually call ntdll.dll
>>
>>109526938
fun bit of trivia.
but this also means that a direct comparison can be made then...
and its pretty bad if im to be completely honest
win 10 was already bad. and m$ft outdid themselves with w11
>>
>>109526970
Sure but I am talking about the kernel, not the userspace
Things like win32 API, process scheduler, drivers, driver API, etc.
>>
I love the Win32 API!
>>
>>109527011
i never interacted with the kernel directly.
but, you know, first impressions, the resulting expectation, and such

NT definitely has a better scheduler than linux because linus is retarded and thinks process scheduling is a "solved problem"
thankfully you can just plug in sched_ext schedulers now but microsoft was never arrogant enough to think they had the perfect solution
>>
>>109527029
>I love the Win32 API!
Far more stable than what ever slopnix standards that are being followed in linux.
>>109527042
Yeah and Linus also is anti ACPI, which is literally the thing that makes many operating systems just work on amd64 (x86-64) that isn't the case with arm because they use device trees, all of the nightmare with android devices and arm as a whole are supported by Linus.

it started as a micro kernel then they moved shit to kernel mode because '93 was too slow for micro kernels. they have been adding the micro kernel shit back since windows vista. but i don't think they will be going 100% micro kernel again anytime soon.

it's been getting some interesting scheduler features
>https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/procthread/fibers

Also all Windows strings internally are UTF-16. which is part of the reason why Windows can consoom more memory than linux and macos

>is it better or worse
idk
>>
I have heard that the nt kernel is great and all that but since it is inseparable from windows and all that slop it kinda makes it pointless, doesn't it?
>>
>>109529797
well it makes sense to discuss it because we are starting to get FOSS implementation of NT (React OS)
>>
>>109526790
Nope, you're just a retard.
Linux is """continually developed""" because the dumbass has decided to include drivers right into the kernel.
The kernel has been feature complete for both NT and Linux since the 90s. All the kernel itself does is handle filesystems (= file i/o), handle memory (= virtualize ram) and handle the video framebuffer (NT) or tty (unix).
Proof: literally anything you can do with today's kernels you could do thirty years ago. Only the surrounding low-level APIs changed.
>>
>>109529834
oh boy, give it another 20 years.
>>
>>109526907
Windows XP does not have a compositor. The compositor was added in Vista.
>>
>>109526907
This is not actually correct. And I checked the source code to verify. Whilst it is true for other ansi functions that they call the unicode version. The internal GUI functions are generic and use a flag to specify ansi or unicode. CreateWindowExA and CreateWindowExW call the same worker function.
