My company is stuck in the past and I have no pull to change it. I troubleshooted a floppy disk error yesterday. My manager also thinks that 8GB of RAM for new computers running Windows 11 is "plenty". Then their computers completely freeze up on them and they complain all the time. My manager was gone and I was only only IT on-site for a company-wide meeting when the girl who was presenting to everyone had her laptop freeze up and I had to power it down mid meeting and get it all started back up. >>109530676The original paper on "Waterfall" is really very reasonable. Part of what happened is the guy responsible the DoD implementation of those ideas only read the first part of the paper so he missed all the stuff in the latter parts where Royce addresses the issues with the process and how to mitigate them. After that, everyone just associates "Waterfall" with "inherently horribly inefficient and time wasting bullshit" when the actual methodology incorporates iteration, exploratory prototyping, and so on. >>109536470I tell them straight up.>Sure does. It isn't the coding part that's the bottleneck, it's all these extra stages and bureaucracy. I'm waiting on human PR reviews, then I'm waiting on human QA, and people always have something trivial they'd like to add or adjust, restarting the entire process. None of this is necessary. The shartiest SaaS I worked at even had not one, but TWO entirely separate PRs for their two different dev/master branches, an extra layer of potential failure and fakework
Can we just go back to waterfall? Was that so bad?
>>109536593They basically turn Agile into waterfall. Then we get the worst of both worlds in one. The business/product side simply has no ability to actually generate good requirements on a revolving 2 week interval. It all comes down to the engineer doing and explaining everything to everyone and this is probably why our jobs are quite safe. The modern corporate SDLC world is entirely incapable of utilizing AI to the max, but startups are.
>>109536593It required planning in advance, if we could just start now we could get results quicker with minimum viable product. For other problems, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. We have time to plan and make unit tests/architecture/refactoring later.

got a job offer (not from apple tho) ~200k a year, no stock, just base + bonus as a software engineering contractornot my first choice, I'm trying to lead these guys on until I get an offer or formal rejection from the interviews I have going on, but they're pushing me to accept asap. What are the implications of accepting and then leaving like 2 weeks before starting?
>>109538907Reject until you get 300k a year
>>109532520Standard sliding window pattern, not even a variation.I'm curious, have standards gone up over time? I feel like jobs back then were less abstract which made leetcode way more useful. Even then I think that the average engineer couldn't solve this conceptually. Not whining that things might be more difficult now, just curious what it was like. Leetcode is fun as fuck if you're not having to grind it.

Is this a fine structure for a cpp project? I've seen a lot of different patterns. The .Core btw is a static library that is included into both the tests and main app project. However, I've seen project structures where instead the Core and Tests were in a single project/ folder as subfolders.
>>109540188literally just copy paste the image into chatgpt and ask it ngga
>>109540188Not sure. Unit tests as a different compilation target is fairly common from what I’ve seenb. One thing I don’t like is that your include directory structure doesn’t map well to your source directory structure. It doesn’t have to be 1:1 but if you have multiple targets within the same src directory you should organize your inner directories around that. And one CMakeLists.txt file per target. Of course this advice is for adequately complex projects. If what’s on the picture is all the code you are going to have it’s overkill.
