linux is just an app on windows now, this setup really is the sweet spot, atleast for me, I need ms office apps like word and notes for college, games (steam and xbox) for myself, the only reason I really needed linux environment was for learning x64 assembly, and the compiler course, all I had to do was to install the ms wsl extension on vscode and I was good to go, there is no Visual Studio equivalent on any native linux distro, and I like to do graphics/game dev, most resources for that target windows, it feels good that I get to do everything I want without worrying about power management (low battery life) or anything else breaking at all, all os and bios updates happen without hassle, there is no lenovo vantage for linux btw, so bios updates would have been a problem, also no battery saver mode and other features on native linux.
>>
wsl is for babies who couldn't figure out cygwin/msys2/vm.

WSL2 is just better than msys2 bro, I have used the latter before, i don't think anyone over 85IQ can get "filtered" by it, its installation is not different than most other stuff.

wsl2 pros: you have linux on windows
wsl2 cons: you still run windows
>>109528735
nah those are shit
>>
>>109528922
Despite the memes, windows is actually the best we have.

wsl2 cons: worse performance and dogshit compared to wsl1

those 2 don't go together sorry, windows is work + games, desktop linux is nothing.
>>109529529
objectively better than native linux so still a win.
>>
>>109528735
I know literally nobody who uses wsl instead of running linux natively or at least in a VM or docker.
>>
>>109529607
it's the opposite, nobody on windows who requires linux environment, uses it for running GUI stuff, so vm isn't needed unless you are testing enterprise stuff.
>>
>>109529094
wine is not an emulator.
on the other hand, wsl2 is a complete virtual machine.

the difference clearly shows when you try to run something intensive. on wine, nvidia drivers and cuda just works for adobe suite/games. but running linux software in wsl, i can't use the gpu at all.

>nobody on windows who requires linux environment, uses it for running GUI stuff
Actually, many people do. Linux VMs are quite popular among professional software devs. Mainly because many companies don't issue Linux work devices, so you're given a Windows machine and told to use Linux in a VM. I've seen it countless of times here in EU.
>need to make Linux software (be it a GUI, driver or a daemon)?
>here's Windows, manage your own Linux VMs
>are you a webdev and you don't want to use a mac?
>here's Windows, but you'll need to use a Linux VM because we're all on mac/linux and windows is shit

Corporations are often seeking security compliance certifications here and it looks like Linux is either not something recommended by security experts, or nobody knows how to deploy work-ready Linux devices. So you're basically stuck with Windows+Linux VM or in some cases macOS.

>>109528686
Wsl can't make the AMD drivers less shit or windows use less memory.

When wintards prefer Linux VM to using native tools on their system lol

WSL is great because Docker runs on it and I run dev containers on Docker
>>
>>109528686
At work, they install so much "security" crapware on Windows that I feel like I was forced to switch.
I don't mind. Sure, accessing Microsoft shit got more annoying, but everything else is better.
>>
>>109528686
Have you tried it? WSL2 is totally broken. Routinely crashes and gets into weird broken states where it must externally be wsl --shutdown'd to be started again, often thrashes a windows disk if you operate with linux commands on it, can suffer from memory corruption bugs, etc.
>>
there was a lot of hype for this a couple years back what happened with it?
>>
>>109529680
You can use the GPU but you need to enable it in the wsl config.
>>
>>109528686
i use sometimes windows as "an app on linux", just like you use "linux as an app on windows". and in general have a better experience (as long as i passthrough a second gpu).

back when i was on windows though, wsl2 was alright, but not without issues. just on top from my head: it has shitty networking stack that you constantly have to fight; it has issues with i/o in genera (especially between windows and linux filesystems); it hoards the ram and doesn't release it back (because it's just a vm); it storage consumption can unexpectedly get out of control; and it managed at least 3 times at different occasional corrupt my vhdx disks.
>>
>>109530512
Nothing. WSL was a failure, so Microsoft tried again with WSL2 and it's still a failure. Windows is still bleeding users and developers.
>>
>>109529680
>can't use the gpu at all.
WSL2 fully supports GPU acceleration out of the box.
>>
>>109530547
1. Desktop Linux has 7% user share
2. more developers develop for windows than for desktop linux.
>>
>>109530587
Can't use WSL graphics in a HyperV client, relevant for corporate environments.
>>
>>109530639
Nobody has developed for desktop windows in absolute ages. The only thing now is electron slopware, which is natively multiplatform.
>>
>>109530649
Good point. Related to that, use of hyper-v nukes use of any intel official tools (e.g. cpu voltage tuning) because they are gay and refuse to run on an hyper-v enabled device.
>>
>>109530664
>Nobody has developed for desktop windows in absolute ages
Games
And gorillion other stuff which i am too lazy to type for you.
>>
>>109530639
When WSL was released desktop Linux had a 1% market share.

Also as the other anon said, most people use cross-platform tools and sometimes just choose to only compile a Windows version. Most software people use every-day is cross platform.
>but muh games
Irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. There being 10 thousand games that only target Windows hardly matters especially with Proton existing. Games are not critical software that people need or generally care about.
>>
>>109530841
Not developed for desktop windows anymore. Same deal as electron, except largely consoles as main target.
>can't find a single other example
lol
>>
>>109529094
Reluctance from many corporations VS Incompetence from a single corporation
>>
>>109528686
It's not the sweet spot though. Why would you run something more stable on top of something more prone to breaking itself? It's like building a fortress on unstable ground.

Entire operating systems are not magically reduced to "apps" upon revealing your unmanageable subliteracy and technical incompetence.
