Terry A. Davis, the creator of TempleOS, died 8 years ago today. Say something nice about him and his operating system.

probably the smartest person to ever post on /a/

Nice trips. And he posted on /a/? I never knew he had any interest in anime.
>>
I thought Temple OS was pretty cool but I didn't like how racist he was.
>>
>>109529275
I felt sorry for him because of his defects and felt relief when his suffering stopped.
>>
I liked him because he was racist and I liked when he started to drink beers. Don't care for his OS much, seemed like a college project that got out of hand.
>>
he could do much more. see you soon terry.
>>
>>109529518
Interesting, I'm the complete opposite

rest in peace
>Minimal abstraction is a goal
>Everything runs in kernel, ring 0, mode.
>One language and compiler for command-line, scripts, songs, automations and code.
>No object files. Use JIT.
TempleOS+HolyC is super interesting and refreshing, it inspired me to start making my own language+OS.
Hobby OS'es are filled with same'y UNIX clones written in C, i wish more hobby OS devs had the insight and creativity to build something better instead of reimplementing 50+ years old APIs, i don't see a point in chasing the C/POSIX rabbit, just use Linux/BSD at this point.

Terry A. Davis was a genuinely original mind—someone who built TempleOS not as a product, but as an intensely personal universe where curiosity, humor, and craft all lived side by side. TempleOS, with its distinctive programming environment and bold, uncompromising simplicity, has inspired countless people to play with low-level systems and learn “how computers really work,” even if only as a creative challenge. His work also carried a kind of fearless artistic streak: he didn’t just write software, he built a whole world to think in.

"CIA niggers glow in the dark" remains one of the funniest things I've ever read. God bless Terry.
>>
2016 election tourist here and I watched him livestream with another 2-5 people when they'd post alerts on this board

It's a very good hobby OS, if you want a kernel that stays out of your program's way like DOS did, but that does a lot more than DOS. If your broken program takes the system down because the OS doesn't thoroughly protect programs from each other, you just reboot, and that's okay on a single user hobby OS.
>>
rest in peace terry, people cared about you and your os, you will be missed

He had the right ideas about programming and computers.
>>
he was right about user-first operating systems. respect the user and stop protecting them from themselves, fail hard and fast
he was also right about where computers went wrong.
both of these ideas and more influence my design decisions to this day and I hope they see other thinking programmers through this dark age of bloatware

Rest in peace you crazy based coding genius.

Wasn't the idea for that to get him kicked out of his parents' house?

I generally don't like racists but Terry was just mentally unwell and kind of funny with his racism.
What racists forget is that you have to at least try to be funny, otherwise it's just dumb and boring.
