I downloaded Kali and there was some tool that allowed you to see images that were sent over wifi. I accessed instagram on my phone and saw the pictures on my computer. Shortly after instagram started using HTTPS anyway so it stopped worked .

A short while later he noticed my mail and apologized. 10 minutes later another mail arrived from him with the text "FUCK YOU!". Reuploading the files took me almost half a year.

It was a C program that I fucked up. I didn't see much and I stopped quickly because I'm a pussy and didn't want to get in trouble, but that was probably the closest I've ever come to actually hacking. I've kind of fucked my router up a couple times testing my config with nmap, but that doesn't count.tldr: consumer hardware is not really up to snuff when it comes to handling brute force and other real attacks from inside the LAN. You need an x86 or otherwise big boy machine to tank any real attack.
