Getting cochlear implants for sudden & total deafness that occurred a couple years ago.The tech is pretty cool, doctors have suggested many options, several of the new models come with bluetooth so you can essentially stream directly into your brainim pretty tech illiterate, but this doesnt seem like a fantastic idea. I would appreciate if someone smarter than me could explain the specific vulnerabilities potential idiocy of having a device connected to wifi/bluetooth attached to nerves inside my skull.thx :)

>>109537050I'd prefer a toslink input, this way you can actually transmit perfect lossless audio directly digitallyThe bluetooth and microphone parts are extremely likely to be egregiously shitty, even the best miniature electret and mems microphones will have over 30db of low freq noise floor and the adc/dac used are equally likely to be dogshit.The bluetooth implementation will probably just be SBC with over 200ms latency, which can make low frequency detail metallic(audible with test tones, it can add a parasite metallic noise)What you want is toslink input outputted by a quality spdif interface(not realtek shit that never works), usb-c will be a safety liability and probably add ground loop noise, not good.At worst you may have to diy your own converter, considering how egregiously incompetent audiologists always are i would expect cochlear implant engineers to not even be aware of the importance of an high quality implementation.

>>109538517It doesn't matter a damn because cochlear implant technology limits the achievable sound quality below GSM codec. At best there are around 20 fixed bands of excitation across the frequency range at whatever part of the cochlea that particular electrode of the array ends up. You can simulate that with a vocoder and whatever the result is, it isn't going to be music, at least not to anyone who has actually heard with their actual ears before.

>>109540567Yeah, using weed helps my hearing, oddly enough. But it's a matter of the brain being "trained" for the implants inputs over natural hearing. You'll struggle the older you get the implant. It's not like it doesn't help, but it's not going to be the magical cure that a lot of implant companies try to advertise as.
