>fell for the Wix meme
I have wix for 3 more years and I'm looking to build something like this squarespace site: https://rayintakath.com/#/elemental-series/
Basically: gallery click project detailed project view prev/next navigation + gallery clone underneath.
I got close using the wix Multi-State Boxes, but their height is fixed, so short projects leave a huge empty space before the gallery. Couldn't find a way to set the individual states height automatically.
Is there even a way to do it or should I just pay for another service?
>>
>>109544302
I can't picture it, can you post a picture of what you're doing or something?
The main section is a bunch of boxes alternating left/right, with padding. The gallery is a masonry layout with text appearing on hover

Basically I want to make navigation easier.
My site currently has a gallery that links to new pages for each project.
I want the user to move freely from page to page, using a "clone" of the main gallery below each expanded project.
Just like in this reference: https://rayintakath.com/#/elemental-series/
I could more or less achieve that with multistate boxes on wix, but the box does not conform its height to the different contents of each project.
Looking for alternatives.

My phone does have space for two sims. If I put my old sim in too will it continue working as it should and then seamlessly start using the new one with my old number once the 24 hours are over? I know absolutely nothing about phones technology chads, go easy on me.

I've been having this weird problem lately on youtube and only youtube. In the middle of almost every video, mostly the newer ones, there's an artifact in the middle of the video that renders the parts near it blocky when movement happens. This problem happens when viewing on the website, when viewing through mpv and when downloading with yt-dlp. Other video websites such as dailymotion and vkvideo have no such problem.

I'm currently on windows 11 and I'm sick of it, especially updates that ignore when you disable updates, the horrific usage of ram, AI everywhere, Microsoft accounts etc.

some phones can record at 120fps or more, though it's usually used to make slow-mo footage since there isn't a huge benefit for video faster than 60fps, at least as far as most are concerned.

>>

>>
>>109546630
Privacy laws have nothing to do with anything. ISPs in the US are required by law to do the 3 strike letter faggotry when they receive copyright complaints. If you use a VPN exit node in the states, the exit node operator's entire job is to say "common carrier" and throw copyright complaints in the bin. That's literally all a VPN does. The exit node can be in another country too except there they say "good luck bringing me to America retard"

So I got a 144hz monitor
Will reducing my display to 60hz actually change performance in any way or the display somehow not use any computing power by itself?
Let's assume there's a demanding game where you aim for 60fps instead of 144, would you see any difference?
>>
>>109549428
With Freesync/Gsync the monitors hz matches whatever fps the game is. If the game is 60fps then it automatically drops from 144hz to 60hz.
>>
>>109549428
on a lot of monitors you actually get worse blur running at 60hz instead of running at 120hz and only rendering 60fps

Either there's a flaw to using Proton's free VPN (yeah, I know) or I was a retard and forgot to turn it on in the first place that day (possible, but I find unlikely), but I got a letter from my ISP for torrenting. Any other possible ideas on what happened?

I'm pretty good at keeping track of upcoming dates in my mind, so I don't bother using a calendar (physical or digital), but figured I should get into the habit of using one as a safeguard and documenting. Any recommendations?

Maybe this is outside the scope of a calendar application, but I'd like if it had some kind of journal feature to also keep track what I did that day.

>Youtuve won't let me watch videos without signing in
YouTube is hit or miss for me in this regard. More times than not though, I can watch without signing in.
>Reddit also keeps throwing up a login popup to stop me from browsing without signing in.
I'm assuming you're trying to visit it on old Reddit? Reddit is rolling out a log in requirement for those visiting via old Reddit (supposedly to "fighting scrappers/spammers", something along those lines. If you get that message, you can still use the site, though at the cost of being on the ugly new UI. Messing with a VPN, it seems like they're selectively applying this restriction to some areas of the US. For now.

I'm setting up dual boot between linux and windows, trying this for the first time. Is there a way to have a common or shared profile for a browser between both OSes? If it could share tabs and extensions and violentmonkey scripts going from one OS to the other. Bonus points if it can seamlessly share 4chan XT settings as well.

I tried putting the profile folder in a common HDD both can access, it kinda works but on Windows I have to login to everything again and YouTube for whatever reason doesn't load properly. I haven't tried Firefox Sync yet.

>>109553649
you could try leaving the firefox directory on the windows drive and then mount it and symlink it on the linux side. depending on where on linux your profiles are (something like ~/.mozilla/profiles) you could cd in that directory and then do a `ln -s /path/to/windows/profile .` I doubt that's gonna work but it's worth a try. alternatively if you dont mind wasting space you could rsync the directory from the windows partition to the linux partition. you'd have to ask the linux thread for specifics tho

It's similar to how you can detect how somebody wrote a paper or letter without having seen them. Due to a person's inherent personality, they'll use the same linguistic mannerisms over and over again. AI detection does that, It detects code snippets and patterns that are repeated over and over and over again in other code snippets that it's analyzed that have also been generated by AI.

I'm on linux, opensuse. AMD GPU.
For the past couple days, occasionally certain windows on my computer will flicker for a frame or two with a bar of RGB noise (picrel is roughly what it looks like). To my knowledge this bar doesn't extend across the entire screen unless it is a fullscreen application.
This usually only appears if there's a lot of movement on screen, like during a game or when switching between several images in an image viewer.
I've tried updating my drivers when I noticed this first happening, I tried toggling enable fullscreen tearing, I've tried toggling HDR, I've tried toggling 10 bit and 8 bit per pixel color, and nothing so far has fixed this.

Is this most likely to be hardware in my computer dying, my monitor dying, or me being in need of new drivers that aren't available yet?

Why is my wired speed specifically so shit?
I always just thought it was my internet and never thought much of it since it wasn't 'slow' just not super fast, but after seeing a phone game download 14gb in hardly any time at all over wifi I got suspicious and did some digging.

My download speed on wifi is over 5x speed I am getting (~94mbps with ethernet, to over 500 with wifi)

Quick searching all leads to the same canned reddit responses that don't seem likely - either a broken/bad cable or port. I've tested all 5 cables I could find (all cat5e or cat6), on two separate PCs as well as trying directly into the router vs the wall. The likelihood that across all those combinations is that the cable/ports are bad seems low to me. I'm sure its possible and I can order a brand new ethernet cable but there's a simpler fix I'd like to try it first.

I've also tinkered with a bunch in-windows network adapter settings that did nothing to change my speeds (some of them actually halved my upload so I reverted them). And all my other settings/limits in the hardware that I can see shouldn't be cucking me to 100mbps so I don't know why it is so slow.

I think its more likely that the cables are made for 100Mbit/s since I've had them forever so they're all just pretty old but they still work so I just think its unlikely that all of them are faulty.
Is the plate thing something I need or can I just try buying a newer cable for like $10 and hope it works

If its a simple fix I'd like to do it. But if its not I'm probably better just swapping to wifi for downloads when I really benefit from the extra speed and then using a scuffed 90mbps for gaming/streaming shit

I'm trying to convert some anime mkv files into mp4 files using ffmpeg and need to know the following:
How do I carry over all the audio tracks/streams?
How do I carry over the subtitles?
The current command I'm using is:
ffmpeg -i 01.mkv libsvtav1 -crf 20 -preset 1 output.mp4
This will only carry over the default audio track and chapters.

Those 100Mbit cables are light and flexible because there's only half the wiring and it usually shows up when you look at the connector.
>>

>I think its more likely that the cables are made for 100Mbit/s
No it isn't. Cables haven't changed much since they started using catwire for Ethernet. They can all run 2.5G minimum. 100Mbit cables are ones that only use 2 pairs and have an oldschool telephone hooked up to the other 2.

figured it out when I looked in the modem manual
2 ports in the back of the modem were capped at 100mbps and 1gbps respectively
for whatever reason the one feeding internet into the router was the one in the 100mbps port. Swapping those 2 ethernets fixed the whole thing

thanks for the help lads
>>
>>109569270
Your internets come from a dumb modem with 100Mbit and 1000Mbit ports and after the modem comes a router? Post the gear.
>>
>>109569306
I might just be using old terms I'm too stupid for this shit
there's the main gateway device from the isp (I call it the modem, it looks like a space heater) with several ports, 2 ports were in use and upon logging in one showed 100mbps the other 1000
Then there's a network switch (I call the router) that has like 10 ports that feeds internet into wall jacks in different rooms. The switch has lights that indicate if they are getting 10mbps, 100mbps, or 1000mbps and all the ports with an active ethernet were showing 100mbps light
So I just swapped the modem cables
>>
>>109569358
Right. The thing your ISP gave is a modem+router combo, with Wi-Fi I assume. A switch is just a switch, it doesn't even speak IP nor care for it, it delivers Ethernet frames around.
>>
>>109569392
Makes sense, if it works it works I guess. I never really had an issue like I said at the very start I didn't even notice it until I randomly saw how fast something downloaded on my phone compared to what I was getting on steam.
I'm guessing that the other port the 1000mbps was initially feeding is for the TV stuff (since my wifi/phone still gets the same good rates it was before I swapped them). And I don't really use that very often outside of sports but I can always swap it back if its an issue

-c copy will copy video, audio, and subtitles without encoding
-c:a copy, will copy audio
-c:s copy, will copy subtitles
-c:v copy, will copy video

if that doesn't work, you may have to map each track, 0 indexed, so
-map 0:a
will copy all audio tracks from the 0th input, you can find more info here https://www.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html, or ask google gemini

According to college standards why is using AI generated logic flow bad in Computer Science? Why are you not allowed to use AI to generate examples of what you need if you can't find what you're looking for through web results or have a hard time figuring out the functions and logic you need for a complex system? I'm goes straight to AI to find a solution but often time it does offer examples that you simply can't find for your specific needs and it makes finding the functions much easier that are associated with what you need to build.

>explain passkeys like I'm a drooling retard
Your phone's PIN is something you know
Your phone is something you have
A passkey satisfies these two factors by making your use your pin (or fingerprint) with your phone at the time of login to prove you are you

Someone far away can know your phones PIN but they don't have your phone with them, so they don't authenticate
someone can steal your phone but that doesn't mean they know your pin so they can't authenticate
>do I need a physical yubikey or whatever
no, you can use one but you can also use a phone, or a laptop, or a password manager
>what happens if I lose the yubikey or the device on which I first set the passkey up
passkey is never the only way in, you still have multiple backup options depending on the site, they will have you set up backup options before they allow you to login with a passkey
>why is it more secure than me using a password manager and TOTP 2FA on a different device
it is equivalent security but isn't vulnerable to phishing like TOTP, some people still give out their TOTP over the phone when talking to what they think is a support rep
>I'm not retarded and never fell for a phising attempt
You can keep using TOTP, but passkeys do have the small advantage of not having to type your password

Case you want your mail client to render HTML isn't big and fat the necessary evil?
>>109577761
Haven't used VPNs lately but back in the day I created separate routing table entries just for 4chins.
The thing is when your VPN is on you still got connectivity to your usual internet gateway (home router), it's just that only the VPN endpoint is routed thru it. Then the so called default gateway is set to whatever the virtual VPN endpoint is. Now what I did was I added the two (AFAIK there was only 2) 4channel IPs to also go thru the usual internet gateway.
How to do all that is highly OS specific, I was using Linux and I did some configuration with systemd-networkd.
>>
>>109578140
>Case you want your mail client to render HTML isn't big and fat the necessary evil?
claws-mail has three options for html rendering, well four if you count "none". dillo, litehtml, and webkit. webkit is a full-featured html renderer so you can use that plugin if you want full html support. i don't use any of them since i don't care for html support

>>
>>109577761
Split tunneling just means they created a separate network namespace for the VPN connection. You can do that yourself. Or get a different provider client that does it for you. Using VPN for everything by default is dumb anyway unless you're stuck on super sketchy dorm wifi or something.

>>109578140

>>
Does picrel look like an elephant to you?
>>109579957
Who are you quoting?
Anyway, that's what I said, you can throw in any arbitrary IP blocks and tell them to go thru any arbitrary gateway.
Another example: I had a beefy 4G and super slow DSL but the DSL had much better ping. What I did I took both in use, used the 4G router as my default gateway (0.0.0.0/0) but routed my DNS (a specific block) thru the DSL router. (also I threw in 4channel thru the DSL as posting pics was denied from mobile internets)
Moral of the story is it's completely irrelevant which connection or adapter is "real" or not. You can mix VPN or multiple real gateways, OS just reads the table and makes a routing decision based on it.
>>
>>109580004
It's kind of a bullshit field. You're basically manufacturing excuses for bad security practice by performing rituals and reciting cybersec liturgy when anyone asks questions.
>can't someone in the 3rd world do this over the internet
A lot of times, yes.
>>
>>109580031
If you're using a VPN presumably you have a reason. Like you want to guarantee bittorrent traffic won't leak onto your normal internet connection. Default routes won't do this because your OS will start looking at non-default routes when the default connection becomes unresponsive.
>but i have a kill swi-
That shit doesn't work either.
>>
>>109580127
Right. The problem is the VPN software tends to revert back to the "normal" routes after the VPN disconnects which is kinda bad IMO. If the connectivity stayed broken there would be no leakage.

If you have to decide between using a credit card directly or through paypal, is there an obviously worst option privacy-wise?
Theoretically I think paypal would be better if you could trust it, but its hardly trust worthy.
In the end both could be linked to your identity, so maybe this is a toss-up, but I wonder if there's a clearly better and worse option.
>>
How risky is it to dl movies directly? There are certain pages on twitter that share dl links to really high quality stuff.
I'm less concerned about malware because I've heard it's impossible to hide in video files. But my country is notoriously harsh on consuming pirated media, which is why I avoided torrenting so far. Can dl links get you in trouble aswell?
>>
>>109580517
You don't have any privacy in either scenario. You shouldn't use PayPal because it's a shit company.
>>
>>109580523

>I'm less concerned about malware because I've heard it's impossible to hide in video files
Not impossible but rare. DDL users are who gets hit when there is an exploit.
>>
>>109580523
Probably not. I'd suggest learning more about XDCC. It's an old fashioned way to pirate. I was doing it before torrents ever existed. I had a friend in Germany who was really into it and I was surprised he was doing it instead of torrenting but it makes sense with their cucked laws.

That's the name they gave to the specific kind of bots, what's really happening is just file sending on IRC. Then there was the "fileserver" way of getting files, it's technically all the same.
>>
>>109580517
A credit card is better if paypal is the other option. Paypal can close your account anytime without good reason and they have strict rules against all sorts of purchases. Both are linked to your identity and everything is traced but it's doubled if you go with paypal.
>>
>>109580786
Well XDCC has it's own set of commands and everything, yeah it's just a bot sending you files over DCC on IRC though. Usually running on iroffer. I don't know shit about technology so I'm not quite sure how to word this question; please be patient with me and answer it like I'm borderline tech illiterate.

From what I understand, hardware requirements for software standards have been gradually increasing since forever. 4GB RAM was monstrous for a computer in 2000. By 2010, it was pretty standard. Nowadays it's not enough even for a cellphone.
Storage capacity works the same way. 512GB of storage space would've been ridiculous in 2000. By 2010 it was merely 'pretty solid.' Nowadays it's just considered the bare minimum for a laptop depending on the use case. I assume that in 10 years it will be laughable.
So on and so forth. Processing power, battery capacity, camera specs, it's all the same behavior. Electronics seem to observe a kind of inflation the way currency does.

What happens when we reach the upper limits of density with these types of components? Like what happens when it becomes physically impossible, not just prohibitively difficult or expensive, to build parts that can outperform generations prior in the same footprint or smaller? What do we do then? I hope I'm making sense here
>>

It seems to happen only at low fan speeds, but the frequency doesn't really match (pictured example is ~40 chirps per minute at 700RPM). The sound disappears if I set it to high RPM for a short time and doesn't return for hours/days. I cleaned the fan, nothing is touching its blades and outside the occasional chirping it seems to be working just fine. Any ideas what it could be or what else I could check? Can I somehow use the storage space or the phone itself even for a pi hole...or any other cool projects? It just lays there doing nothing anyway
>>
>>109585739
I think if you don't have root you might struggle to bind to port 53 and even using termux wouldn't help. But you could have some ultra dumb and jank setup where you have a TCP proxy on the pi going to a DNS server running on some other port on the phone.

Probably the smarter thing is to look into setting up a ramdisk, doing most of the read/write operations for your pi hole there, and doing periodic backups to the SD card.

About to wipe out GPT on /dev/sda. Proceed? (Y/N): y

Blank out MBR? (Y/N): n
MBR is unchanged. You may need to delete an EFI GPT (0xEE) partition

After doing this, I reboot to confirm everythings working before proceeding with the cloning process. Windows 10 doesn't boot anymore (just black screen with blinking prompt but doesn't register input). However the partitions on the disk remain unchanged and I can pull data out of it. The PC is really old it's a 2008~ HP mini desktop with a Pentium Dual-Core E5300 (it is a relatives PC) so I am almost sure this is not an EFI/UEFI issue because this computer is too old for that. Also W10 was installed/upgraded on top of W7 that originally came with the computer.

How do I fix this /g/? I'll say that my pc skills are pretty damn rusty, on my personal computers I have w7, w10 and debian that I installed a looong time ago. Something I noticed was that my unc pc would boot up in seconds despite the oldass e5300, I know Windows 10 can use some sort of rapid/hyprid sleep booting process so I am almost sure I somehow messed up with it, or Windows say the GUID-partitions change and refuses to boot.

I have a problem that's making me go insane for how weird it is. I'm using Arch Linux and I just bought a new internal dvd drive since my old one broke but it's having lots of problems reading cds: all of them crackle at certain parts, mostly parts with high volume, and playing them through audiocd-kio is buggy as hell. The crackle is present even in rips, which take much longer than expected. The weirdest thing is that the drive works fine in other PCs, I was able to test it. I have no idea what's going on.

Why doesn't this shit just work?
The only demos where I've seen it work properly is HDR photos like the link below and videos in YouTube:
https://www.wide-gamut.com/test/image-hdr

But when I enable it it washes out all SDR content making it look unusable, when I try it in a game the game at best looks exactly the same as in SDR.
Even on my PS5 which should be as plug-and-play as possible I calibrate the screen and the UI looks dark and games look worse than SDR.

there's nothing wrong with the concept of 3D either but in practice it still ends up being a stupid gimmick you've literally proved this with HDR yourself for yourself with your own testing at best it it ends up looking about the same as SDR 99% of the time only time it ends up being even remotely impressive is when used with content tailor made purely for HDR like the demo images

i need a rec for a ground loop isolator/hum eliminator. there's a lot of these on the market and they look like garbage.

if i plug my amp and speakers into the same outlet as my PC i get horrible ground noise through the speakers. the only solution i have was to run a cable around the room to a different outlet specifically for my amp/speakers. the PC soundcard output is a standard 3.5mm to RCA on my amp.

i'm curious specifically how these affect sound quality and volume. i wouldn't want something that simply acts like a noise filter.

on the market i see a difference in quality for these things, the lower end seem to be for car stereos and basic bitch TV setups, but i'm more concerned about protecting the quality of my stereo audio, without any interest in paying for audiophile snake oil.

You can scan cards and maybe even pull some info from them. My debit card for example tells my name, currency, expiration date among other things.
There's this (outdated) Linux program called CardPeek, idk about else. It basically comes with a bunch of scripts meant for communicating with various type of cards. You can try SIM cards for example if you glue them back into the full frame. (note that the frame shouldn't have the gap between the full size and mini/micro/nano, it can break your card reader by bending the contact pads!)
>not quite sure what exactly is the intended purpose desu. Scanning physical passkey
>physical passkey
It's a standard card form which all cards use. In my country I can log into some (most) government services with my ID card. You configure your browser for a security device and then enter the ID card's PIN when asked.

Again, the idea is the same: you got a device that holds private keys and does cryptography with it, mostly authentication. Phone's SIM does this to authenticate to a cell tower and a credit card does this by authenticating to the bank.
Then there's the USB security key that can be used to authenticate to a web service that supports it. Also some operating systems have support for authenticating the user to administrative privileges via the USB key. (with Linux I can "sudo" with the key)
>you say /the/ national id cards but i don't know what that refers to, maybe that means something to anyone in another nation than me
Not sure how many countries do it but there are various European countries with chip IDs. It's not very popular though as ID'ing with online baking has been the thing since smartphones got popular.

Smart cards are circuit cards, going back to old java cards. They do have different iso specs and proprietary software might be required to read, it's not like plugging in your usb or sd card.

From what i remember in USA, they were mostly considered security cards, though some banks use them.

In EU it's far more common choice in the civil sector. Majority of banks use smart cards credit cards, Mobile telephone number use SIM-card, with is in fact another type of smart card.

National ID smart cards is a EU project, standardize encryption and the storage of biometric data in your government approved identified card, hence the name nation.

Does anyone else have a shit experience with USB C? I swear it feels like I'm the only person in the world that doesn't feel like it's God's gift to technology. I genuinely have as much or perhaps even more problems with my phone's charging port now as I did with micro-USB when I worked in a filthy kitchen with flour and grease in the air constantly and I work in a clean office now.
What's really pissing me off is that now my keyboard is doing the same shit, the connection is flimsy as fuck and just moving my keyboard forward to make room on my desk to work on something else makes it disconnect.
>>
>>109596242
>>109596290
By the way, there are smartcard protocols, and many USB security keys (at least Yubikey, and I'd assume others too) can act as a "smart card" effectively.
But the benefit is they usually support other protocols too, like FIDO U2F, FIDO2 passkeys, pretending to be a USB keyboard to type in TOTP 2FA codes, storing GPG keys, etc.
>>
>>109596941
What are you using? Website? Free or paid?
There's usually a massive system prompt that sets most shit, so your instructions can be insignificant in comparison. Also the website model is specifically made to talk to normies in gpt speak, while for example the codex models are made purely to read and write code and so are a bit less prone to gpt-speak in my experience.
Cheaper and free models are also a lot worse at following instructions than more expensive models. Subtle "writing style" instructions are also generally somewhat unreliable, a lot more so than straightforward "do this thing" instructions, because the writing style affects all of its words and it can't just easily "think" to itself
>ah, the user also specified X, let me make sure I do that
instead it has to follow the style in everything it generates which is not easy to do reliably when the model is tuned to speak in a different style.
>>
>>109597019
I think there's just no existing market for that shit. Not as in people wouldn't buy it, but as in there's literally nobody making stuff like this and advertising it, and I've never heard a reliable term for this feature that would let you search it either.
I also agree that it'd be useful but I have no idea how to find shit like this.

Bluetooth multipoint, as far as I'm aware, is not that either since I don't think it can literally play sounds from two sources mixed. It just keeps a bluetooth connection open to two devices, and plays whichever one is currently playing sound. Not entirely sure what happens if both are trying to play sound but I've never heard of someone, say, mixing music this way, or taking a call while listening to music or whatever, even though bt multipoint is really common.

I just clean it regularly: I fold a post it note into a thin triangle and scrape out the dust and lint. Works wonders. Usb C is still poorly designed.
>>
>>109597597
There may be lint in the port. Take it out with thin tweezers.
It has improvements and it has drawbacks. In my experience the actual port is more durable than USB-A, and being reversable is a massive convenience boost. Micro was quite solid though, I agree, and its shape meant it didn't have the fullsized's problem of finding the correct orientation. But in my experience over time my micro ports also became flimsy and/or gathered lint.

The worst part about USB-C is almost certainly the fuckhead standards. USB1 was slow, USB2 was an improvement in speed, USB3 was a big improvement in speed. You'd expect the next standard to also improve speed, but no, instead they made USB 3.1, and what it is is the exact same thing as USB3 but with an option for higher speeds. Then they made 3.2 and it has options for the original 3 speeds, the original 3.1 speeds and a new even faster speed, but all of that is still considered 3.2. Also there's displayport support and it's optional. Also there's power delivery support and it's optional and the maximum wattage has many options.
And the issue is not just with the ports (can this port charge? can this port do display out? is this 3.2 port actually fast or not?) but with the cables too.

But those aren't really problems with USB-C itself, just with the USB standard in general, it just happens to coincide that some time around USB3 they basically pushed out A so all of those issues are exclusive to C.
>>
>>109597883
Yeah I clean it out fairly regularly but I've never got one feeling like new from cleaning, it always still feels a bit loose and I get like a month before I need to clean again because my phone won't charge literally at all.
>>109597936
>more durable than USB-A,
Can't say I agree or that I've had any problems of this nature that I can think of with USB-A. USB-A ports always hold my USB plugs in tightly with a solid connection. I really think the convenience of not having to turn USB-C plugs around is overstated to a frankly ludicrous degree but I'll admit that a good bit of that is just me being jaded about the problems I have with it and not seeing that microscopic convenience as worth it.
>the speed and power standards
Yeah don't even get me fucking started.
>>
>>109598001
>USB-A
On my old desktop, every single front panel USB-A port ended up having the "tongue" broken over time.
Some ports are pretty stiff and tight, so you have to use force even when plugging in the right way in. This means I always have to be paranoid about the orientation, because if I get it wrong just one time, I'll press down hard expecting it to slide in and it'll crack the tongue and break the port. I haven't done it in a very long time, but the ports still feel fragile to me and I'm still always paranoid about double-checking the orientation.

I dunno maybe I'm just a mong, but that's why I really appreciate USB-C's reversibility. I've also not had any durability problems with it despite using some ports for a few years by now. On my laptop (which I don't put in my pocket to gather lint), they feel like new. On my phone I have had to clean out lint a few times, but when I do it feels fine, I haven't ever felt it "loose".
I guess we maybe just have had different experiences.

Also for all the mess that the standard is, I've actually come to enjoy USB-C power delivery. I carry one charger with me when travelling, I have two identical and reversible cables, and I can charge both my phone and my laptop directly. If I get a new phone or a new laptop I know I'll be able to reuse the same charger. It's neat. It is however kind of brute-forced because both USB-C ports on my laptop support charging, which is convenient, but feels like a useless cost that only exists because there's no clear way to mark or differentiate PD ports so they just said fuck it and made it so there's no wrong port. Caveman approach but hey it works.

Is this an implication in the USA the magnetic stripe is still a thing?

NTA but a few years ago it definitely was, and it was a common thing to laugh at amerifats who had to literally sign (with an actual pen) to pay at cash registers. I think they may have modernised by now though.

It's still a thing but it's mostly for store gift cards. CC processors charge merchants a huge fee to clear swipe transactions.

Are magnetic supports like this a bad idea? Cause I was thinking it’d help a lot having my notebook hold the phone right besides it but I dunno how dangerous the magnet can be

Some phones (notably iphones, but more recently some other phones too) come with a dedicated magnetic ring on the back specifically for various holder accessories like these. It's pretty neat actually I wish more phones had it. It's clearly safe enough. But it does need the ring inside your phone, if your phone doesn't have that as a feature then the magnet will not stick to your phone and it will be useless.

On the screen, I assume it's got some sticky pad or something right? I don't think screens are magnetic. I do think putting a magnet next to an LCD is iffy, while putting it next to an OLED is probably fine, but I don't know enough to say for certain - anyway I'd be very surprised if this wasn't sticky because I can't imagine a magnet on a random laptop lid actually sticking and moreover strongly enough to support the weight of a phone on a lever arm.

Picrel? I'm over 40 and only seen it used by older people when I didn't have my own cards to pay with.

Electronic swipe + signature was a thing for a while in the 00s. Some restaurants still do chip + sig for tips, but it's considered outmoded.

Shops would keep the carbon paper + roller things in case the network went down, but I haven't used one since Christmas 08. New cards don't even come with raised numbers any more.

Alright I feel more safe in buying one of those

If it needs a 6 pin, most prebuilts don't have the PSU to support it. HP Elitedesks have a same fit replacement SKU for their PSU that's 500W. I'm not sure about Dell and Lenovo prebuilts.

I miss this. My dad used to sign one whenever he took us out to dinner.
