>You will be able to land your Linux distro by the end of this thread.

• Google what a `desktop environment` is, this is like the core layer that will make your Linux look AND function like Windows XP if you choose the wrong one, or will make your Linux look like MacOS if you choose correctly.

•• Most Linux distributions will be packaged around what desktop environment they come with, e.g. Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu are the same Ubuntu OS packaged by Ubuntu themselves, but they come with Gnome/KDE/Xfce (respectively) desktop environments.
••• Google different desktop environments and choose the right look and feel of the system for yourself next steps will depend on it.

• Now that you decided what kind of look you want, you have 2 choices:
1. Choose distribution that comes prepackaged with it, benefits are they are unit tested to hell and more stable.
2. You get naked arch and assemble it from binaries, and install any desktop environment you want, it will be buggy, crashy, your life will revolve around fixing your computer after it updates. No you do not need bleeding edge libraries. If this is you, fuck off here >>109529010

• Congrats you picked option 1, so what are the distro options out there. Study this image:

As you have just learned there few main branches of linux:
1. Debian
2. Fedora/RedHat
3. Arch
4. nobody cares, shut up

Each distro class spreads out to subdistros, sometimes a subdistro becomes so popular for its stability and good packaging, ease of use, that it becomes a launching pad for others: Ubuntu which is under Debian.
• Ubuntu on top of having several versions of itself like I mentioned earlier (Kubuntu, Xubuntu and like 4 others), is forked into:
• • Mint
• • PopOS
• • Original SteamOS (New SteamOS is forked from Archlinux)

>BBUH MUH ADOBE
Spin up a VM retard, use it like the toilet that it is, and pause the VM after you are done, benefits are you can pirate everything and not worry about it being corrupted, activate windows for free, torrent adobe etc.

>gayms?
Solved with Proton, steam is actively improving it, the massive move to linux means developers will start to respect the platform and the more people switch the more deliberate developers will be, and will maybe even ensure that translation layers like proton are compatible.

>just dualboot
no retard, that is not a solution, that is a pain in the ass, and its a total cancer having 2 EFI drives, one of your systems will get corrupted eventually, just use a VM

•••
•So how do you pick a distro? You need a use case. If you are above 28 you might value your time, and might have more business uses where WSL2 and unsolicited updates in the middle of your workflow are not appreciated.

Look I can go on and on, the answer is Ubuntu if you are ok with Gnome, answer is Kubuntu if you want it to look good and be stable.

If you are concerned with Ubuntu having some packages older since its long term stable LTS, research Flatpacks

>Flatpack - includes all packages the latest version of an application requires, its isolated from the system.
••••So if someone cries muh outdated packages - this was solved years ago with flatpacks, this is not even a workaround, this ensures the game crashes and not your system

•Install each ISO as a VM and try them out
>but muh distrosea.com
No, those are live images you cannot do anything on them, they lack internet connection, in a VM you can live with it, you can test it, you wont game on it obviously but you can try things out, simulate your future migration so once you pull the trigger the process is smooth.

mint could be fine but it looks like shit, but if you want windows 10 like UI then its fine

fedora has newer packages but it is probably less stable than ubuntu, however it will absolutely be better than windows, stability wise it will be more stable than windows, not a bad option either

You are either misinformed, or enjoy niggeriffic fear-mongering. I've been dual booting on multiple PCs for over 16 years. Maintain a half-ass Windows program that somehow garnered 5,000+ users, but none of them want to die. Need to rebuild, thoroughly test, then push a new release once or twice a year.

Keep all my boxes on legacy boot, half of the drives are for GNU, 2 run Win 7, and 1 runs Win 8.1. Exclusively daily drive RHEL family distros and Debian. Boot into the Windows partitions as much as I update the aforementioned software, and have never encountered even one minor issue.

Great thread have a bump, but what makes you say dualboot will eventually be corrupted? I was thinking of dualbooting just to have two different environments to keep things separated and clean (i.e linux for personal usage and Windows for work)
>>
>>109556660
dualbooting should work fine with limine with minimal setup
just make sure windows doesn't update ever using ultimate windows tool or whatever
if windows has a major update it may decide to eat up the boot partition and make you have a bad day, linux should respect it unless you reinstall and start thrashing the other partitions of purpose
>>
>>109551264
its been working fine for me since february
one of my main games runs in dx12 mode faster than it does in windows despite the claim of nvidia performance being gimped when it comes to dx12 performance
the only part that actually does suck is android emulation not having any hardware acceleration, but I don't have a use case for it anymore lol

>what makes you say dualboot will eventually be corrupted?
basically windows 11 will eventually corrupt your linux, there is always some fuckery with the EFI partition, if you have 2 and one of them is windows, it will be a horrible mess an dyou might be in a situation where you are restoring EFI partition potentially corrupting some of your files

there is no point in running dual boot, like i said just VM if you need something from windows, and exit
>>
>>109557334
>m a never update fag
problem is Windows will update regardless, unless you totally block all microsoft IP's in the hosts file

I had to do this because no matter what admin settings i used on my Win11 Pro, it would still update and restart computer while my WSL2 container was running machine learning training, this happened so many times that both of my machines have hosts block all connections from microsoft forever

I'd use Artix but I don't have the time commitment to set everything up, but if you do that's probably what I'd go for. It's really not a matter of how hard it is to set things up, because you can just ask AI to do all of that for you without touching the wiki once yourself. It's a matter of what you get in linux vs windows, & some of the shit that doesn't carry over is fairly bad or a dealbreaker in some cases.

Not only is Ubuntu the Windows of Linux, Canonical themselves are very much controlled by Microsoft. The whole point of a lot of their projects in the past 10 years was to bring Windows and Ubuntu closer and to give up chunks of Linux to Windows so that Microsoft can do the "embrace" phase. Next up is the extend, then after that extinguish. That's the core reason why there was a shift from GPL to MIT and from GNU utils to uutils. Microsoft wants to embrace Linux by removing as much GPL code as possible.

rclone handles this on literally any distro. It mounts OneDrive via FUSE as a virtual drive so cloud files take up zero disk space and stream whenever.
It has a Web GUI / Rclone Browser if you don't like command line.
If you're coming from Windows, spin up a KDE Plasma or Cinnamon live USB to test it.
