What the bugger was winFS?
>context based FS
how is that supposed to work? what were they smoking?

imagine your filesystem was actually a database and your 2000s era hardware was too dogshit to fulfill the vision that was far too ahead of its time and still is

Simple answer and best answer.

FWIW Microsoft never quite gave up
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftsearch/semantic-index-for-copilot
And neither did Apple
https://9to5mac.com/2026/08/11/ios-27-public-beta-3/

But neither of these are the SQL-like queries WinFS promised. They use semantic ranking based on embeddings.

uuuuuuuuhhhhhh
aaaaaaaa
DOOD!
is that Frutiger Aero???

Longhorn was too ambitious for it's own good, and Dave Cutler managed to salvage as much as he realistically could from that disaster. We got Vista, and with it the modern Windows foundation that we use to this day.

Don't cry over losing WinFS, it, like many other Longhorn concepts, were too ambitious to ever come to life, unfortunately.

>we had these smooth animations back around windows 7
>can barely animate smoothly in windows 11 on hardware multiple times more powerful
>>
>>109557290
Ntfs is a B*Tree indexed filesystem.
It’s already a database.
>>
>>109559816
It's not that Win11 can't animate smoothly.
It's that the animations in Win11 aren't made smooth.

You mean too retarded and jeetified.
The problem with microsoft is that if you don't keep an impression purely from use but actually dig into the code leaks and the actual low level design, you realize that they got the vast majority of ideas correct. The problem is their implementation is always the worst possible shit ever. Partly it's due to their internal culture (every team is always competing with the other teams, so the product is fragmented and many features are genuinely sabotaged by other teams on purpose. I know this because I worked for m$ briefly and saw it happen in real time).

Ambition has never been the right word for this either. They generally just follow. So basically it's like this:

- Someone innovates something
- Years later M$ thinks it's a good idea to have it.
- Someone smart at M$ plans the thing in a very cool way
- Jeets and politics fuck it all up
- It's more retarded than the crappy alternative on other OSs because the others didn't botch the implementation quite as bad.

all animations are shitty time wasters

ok make a query involving multiple joins

the fuck are you talking about nigger? jeets are a recent problem. is this just another case of words having no meaning?

Poo in loo pajeet, not in thread

All filesystems are technically databases.
I understand what you're trying to convey about the vision of WinFS but it wasn't that it was a database, it was that it was structured differently in a way you didn't describe and I dont remember enough to elaborate on.

>context based FS
that's what phones have
normies don't even know what a directory is
it all goes into the bucket
>>
>>109562089
phones don't even really have that.
they have apps and those apps have isolated storage; mostly for your protection and not because it's "good" for you.
you can't tell your phone, "list 100 photos coming from phone number 555-555-5555 and zip them up into a file"
bonus points if it could create a share intent into an app
>>

Steam is the only modern software that attempts something like this and it is pretty cool. It's far more impressive than the standard webslop/svg/flat interface (yes ik steam is also webslop). If only.

Just did. Shit was so cash. What now?
