>Proton is needed to game on Linux
>essentially a Wine fork
>under FOSS licenses
>cannot be installed from a package manager (unlike Wine)
>has to be installed via Steam
>Steam is a proprietary launcher
>it requires a Steam account
>all to download a FOSS package
>which makes Proton locked behind proprietary DRM
If it was any other company than Valve, the Linux community would've caused a revolution. Yet Gabe can get away with this diabolical bullshit that's antithetical to how Linux software distribution operated for decades, and people will defend it.
>inb4 DonkeyBalls Launcher lets you download Proton without Steam
A sane way to install a FOSS package shouldn't be obscure knowledge. It should be as easy as installing Wine, end of discussion.

Valve supports WINE too, they maintain Proton but don't exclusively support just it
>Linux software distribution operated for decades, and people will defend it.
This is just like Libreboot vs Coreboot, or Debian introducing proprietary packages as an option, there have been people for decades that wanted to support convenience over ideology for FOSS, and after decades of not doing that, now that side has more support and people are willing to do it, this in no way stops you from maintaining your ideologically pure alternatives, FOSS is not a dogma, you're allowed to do what you want, even if what you want is to support other software that certain people disagree with.

the vast majority of linux users don't care about open source anymore, they just want a OS that works
they're not using linux because of muh open software and proprietary BAD!, but because they just want a OS that works
I bet most couldn't care less about who Stallman is to be desu

just regular wine with dxvk works for most games
>>
>>109568159
The vast majority of Linux users are also walking talking contradictions that simultaneously want to LARP like they care about FOSS, even if for decades the Linux kernel is what it is and not another GNU Hurd because of binary blobs within it for it to actually work on various hardware configurations.
>>
>>109568294
yeah that's what I use hence my surprise

>>109568331
linux users and "freetards" are not the same thing. not even linux torvalds himself uses a gnu-approved distro. how often do you see someone here using parabola or trisquel? most people just want something better than windows, and foss is more of a nice-to-have than a need-to-have
>>
>>109568388
>linux torvalds
lol that was unintentional
>>
caring about running steam when trying to run games because of proprietary software doesn't make sense from the start because the games themselves are proprietary software. and i can say they are because you're talking about using proton, which only runs windows software, and what foss game only has a windows version?
>>
>>109568087
Linux itself has not been free software since 1996. It was never developed with freedom in mind and Linus Torvalds even made it proproetary at first, before changing his mind in 1992.
>>
I still cant believe people bitch about why Guix doesnt have a Discord server or why they wont ship firmware and steam more easily.
>>
>>109568465
those are systemd protesters
they dont care about free software either, they just care if the distro doesnt use systemd
systemd relying heavily on glibc and being licensed gpl2.1+ isnt hostile to free software either but guix falls to one side of a venn diagram thats acceptable to systemd protestors simply becasue of shephard, and nothing else.

>has to be installed via steam
obviously false, lutris can install and run a proton experimental/hotfix prefix without steam even being installed on your PC
protonup-qt can install any other proton version (including ge) straight into lutris so you can use that too
and you can place that prefix anywhere you like - I have a separate prefix for every game I install (pirate so obviously not steam), then I symlink the appdata and documents folder in each prefix to a single other folder so all my save games are in one place while being able to safely wipe a whole prefix and start over if necessary - every prefix bar one is running proton
>inb4
news flash OP open source software IS obscure knowledge, if you got as far as installing Linux but can't install lutris what are you doing here?

Faugus launcher can manage Proton runners.
The AUR has proton runners.
Nix can manage proton runners with version pinning.

Plenty of options for people that care.

it's honestly no more obscure than knowing about wine.
if you put a totally fresh gaymer on a linux box they MIGHT be able to install steam, but installing wine requires knowledge of wine, and if you know about wine then you know way more about linux than the average person already

i really don't get it. you hate on valve for making proprietary drm software, but then also get mad at them for not compiling their completely free and open source code for you?

This is just the drmschizo. He hates valve for some reason and has been making tens of threads daily for quite a while both here and especially on /v/.
He's genuinely retarded and has shown that he doesn't understand anything he talks about.
Despite the constant and consistent spam, neither /g/ or /v/ jannies ever react, strangely enough.

>source code
No one said anything about source code but (You) do (You) ig, add all the imaginary context you need to win the argument
>>
>>109572037
op very clearly mentions "proprietary [software]" and "how linux software distribution operated for decades", along with "FOSS licenses", and "FOSS packages".
he pretends to care about source availability, but then balks at the availability of only source code
>>
>>109572093
You're the only one reframing the entire discussion to be about source code because you're an autistic faggot that always needs to win gay online arguments so you'll misconstrue a post that's quite obviously referring to the end user experience of installing compiled binaries into bickering about source code since that way you can say that you're right, and you'll forever be blind to the basic things like "99% of people in the world aren't (You) and don't care about compiling from source".
>>
>>109572126
Cool story, but the "end user" in Linux is at the very least a programmer, a decently skilled man that doesn't whine and bitch at the thought of compiling.
Why are you using Linux when it's clearly not meant for you?
>>
>>109568001
I installed vkd3d and dxvk into my PC's default wine prefix and everything seemed to just work
>>
>>109572126
99% of the world doesn't care if something is foss, but op doesn't reflect that.
ops' post reads as /primarily/ being concerned if something is foss or not, i am not reframing anything.

Valve released Proton under the BSD license and you can download it separately. Lutris is available on basically every distro and it pulls proton.
>>
Is it possible to have truly windows games/programs on Linux? Let's say I have a DRM free game on my USB stick and no internet and no steam. What do I need to make the game/program work? You can just run the installer on Windows. But what about Linux? Proton, wine, UI? What do you need to backup?
>>
>>109572149
op doesn't yet understand he's the kind of "user" linux users don't want. ones that bitch and moan at source code rather than thinking "i can make a package for my preferred distribution out of this"
>>
>>109572380
>the kind of "user" linux users don't want
While at the same time Linux users desperately want such people to switch to Linux so that they can circlejerk over Steam Hardware Survey and StatCounter percentages. Funny how that works.
>>
>>109572379
proton is a modified version of wine, you can run most games using plain wine if you add dxvk (directx <12 games) or vkd3d (directx 12 games) to it.
not sure what you mean about backing things up
>>
>>109572400
Great! How do you install DX? And is it possible to have wine portable?
>>
>>109572422
you don't have to "install directx", you install dxvk/vkd3d (refer to your distro's documentation). not sure what you mean with "have wine portable", it's a bit ambiguous.
>>
>>109568001
>cannot be installed from a package manager
It can, though. No idea why you'd put that in a package repo when everything that actually uses it also has functionality to manage downloads and creating prefixes, but you certainly can.
>>
>>109572397
Those scum are exactly the same as you, retards wanting to ruin a niche because mainstream doesn't stroke their ego enough, yet still wanting to be a part of something popular.
Fucking influencer-addled zombies without a single fucking original thought in their smashed brains.
I want both of your ilk as far away as humanly possible from Linux and all of my hobbies.
