It's step 1 in your transition.
It's like when your favorite speedrunner starts wearing earrings while telling you it means nothing and it's a perfectly normal thing for a man to try out.

WSL is how it started for me.

Troonux is transitioning onto a windows addon

does WSL match bare metal performance though, i would wonder about penalties in running emulation layers for something resource intensive like ai or ml
>>
>>109574591
Corporate overlords often support Windows but not Linux. This is how many run Linux at work.

same. i started with wsl ubuntu for the coding environment and linux support for certain repos/projects. now i'm using it full time as my main os.

inb4 my distro sucks. it works well for me. i just put an ai agent in the terminal and tell it to fix or set up whatever i want.
>>
>>109574717
Same, though I went with Ubuntu. Gnome with some extensions is actually really nice. Ubuntu is a good OS IMO because it's well supported by everything and you find guides for everything. It might not give you cool points with retards, but I don't want some lone wolf hardcore adventure, I want something that works.
>>
>>109574752
>I want something that works.
same. also i'm doing local ai stuff and i notice big speed gains in comfyui and with llama cpp on kubuntu compared to windows.
>>
>>109574591
I had my first dose of linux from msys2. with wsl it's even easier. it's only a gateway drug to installing linux.
>>
>>109574657
Top can't happen if bottom people exist.

Also unrelated but is there an extension that automatically sage's whatever I post? So like it enters sage into the options field without me having to do it manually?
>>
>ubuntu
well yeah, no shit, no one wants that shit bare metal
>>
>>109574591
This happens where I work as well. We use Windows because everything just works, drivers, peripherals, scaling, cuda, etc. everything is just ready and when we need to use linux for anything we just open a WSL instance and work for a bit then close it. That's the use of linux, it's a tool. Only midwits want to make it a desktop for whatever reason. I use linux everyday at work but I will never use it for my personal desktop

>>

Yes. Sometimes it outperforms bare metal linux
>>
>>109575066
Who the fuck is actually using Ubuntu?
>>
>>109574636
>does WSL match bare metal performance though
it is bare metal performance. Windows 11 actually always boots as a type 1 hypervisor when VBS is enabled but even if it isn't, when WSL is enabled, it will start booting as such. Linux then uses virtio parav drivers for everything. The only time you'll ever be able to realize something is up is that moving files between NTFS/ReFS and ext4 partitions is very slow because it uses the plan9d for that because they apparently cannot be bothered to write a working NTFS driver for Linux or a working ext4 driver for NT.
>>
>>109574636
File access is hindered on WSL2, two file systems to go through. Prioritizes compatibility and some use cases over performance.
>>
>>109574591
Not transferring to Linux until it has its own SearchEverything that can index new files INSTANTLY like SearchEverything
>>
>>109576173
Someone will come along and suggest something, but I tried every option I could find, and none of them worked reliably. I don't think it's possible anyway, it works on Window due to MFT (Master File Table) which keeps tracks of all files on the volume.

Said nobody ever who actually uses Windows. It needs almost 3x the tech support BigMacOS does, just ask IBM.
>>
>>109575559
nta but there are actually functioning NTFS drivers for linux, the bigger issue is that you can't really have two OSes concurrently operating on the same filesystem
they should probably learn how to use virtiofs instead of plan9d though
>>
>>109576173
>>109576202

Maybe it's because I've never used it but I don't get what it has over the various search tools on Linux that can do metadata and content indexing as well as filenames with instant search results.
>>
>>109574591
I started with WSL and later troonout to bare metal Linux. It's a good way to learn things before making a larger commitment.

Windows users being a decade behind is not surprising. They only recently discovered workspaces and tabs in file managers.

Given the choice they will not install Ubuntu on their computer, but use it for work.
Simply stating Ubuntu is bad but Windows is worse.

Why is modern marketing so weird? even AI and ml is added at the end.
