What's the next step for linux? It feels at this point it's just optimization, cutting off dead branches, bug fixing. That's great, but is something new gonna happen soon? BTRFS2, EXT5?
>>109578366if women suddenly started using linux I would switch to BSD
>>109578366>BTRFS2, EXT5Hopefully never, upgrading filesystem is the worst task. I just migrated from ext4 to btrfs and I'm glad I didn't lose any data. Not to mention there is not much space to upgrade anymore, maybe when btrfs implements native encryption and even then it probably won't bring much advantages over LUKS.
>>109578419>maybe when btrfs implements native encryptionYes and no, LUKS works fine as a layer above it. But what is the ETA of BTRFS native encryption? Heard about it on and off over the years.

>>109578366You're asking the fundamentally wrong question.Continuous low level iteration is a quintessential part of making software that's actually worth using.
>>109578366idk man maybe making dx12 games playable without a 20% gpu util tax or maybe making wayland not create an insane amount of input latency on fullscreen windows, maybe adding display color support for wayland without having to go for nvibrant.

>>109578366nothing its a kernel for a computer all it needs to do as a 'next step' is support new advances in computer hardware
>>109578366Hopefully actual, working Nvidia drivers
>>109578366replace macos on latest cpus of it.
>>109578366The optimization is creating unnecessary incompatibilities, by using specific code or flags for cpu (see rhel, fedora, opensuse and the rest)New kernel releases have become substantially slower than their predecessor, frankly i'm not even sure they fix a bug or simply create them, to cut of another piece. >>109578391Rest assure, every " linux women" is in fact a transvestite.>IBM she might have been hired as a bona fide man, but one she put on a dress. I wish Kent didn't go off the deep end of AI psychosis and bcachefs was still in mainline. It seemed actually promising.
>>109578366There is not next step, it already accomplished it's purpose. Provide an actual functional alternative in a monopolized market.Be thankful that there is still coordinated effort to maintain this ecosystem for free
>>109578366>What's the next step for linux? IStandardization to the point distros are indistinguishable from one another in everything other than name. >systemd >waylandare already standardizing Linux. there is no escape either. For now you CAN run to Void or Artix, but it's only a matter of time before software and apps will all require systemd to run (see GNOME 49) and at that point you'll have no choice.SO, my prediction is that in the 5 to 10 years (which isn't as long as you think) all distros will essentially the same with the only difference other than their names will be maybe the package manger and repos.Screenshot this.
>>109578366>What's the next stepDo it really need one? last time i heard this, they made Windows 8
