Why does Valve's Steam Machine get so much hate here? Steam Machines are optimized for convenience, not just performance: same hardware, no driver issues, no tweaking settings, just press a button and play.

>Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat stated that the 2026 Steam Machine is at least on par with, if not better than, 70% of what Steam's users are utilizing on average. Aldehayyat said that the target specs behind the Steam Machine were based on user data gathered by Steam's monthly hardware surveys. According to Steam's October 2025 hardware survey, the most popular PC specs include Windows 11 as the main operating system, a six-core Intel CPU paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 8GB graphics card, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and one to two monitors that run at 1080p.
>>
They’re underpowered and overpriced. Valve should have subsidized the cost of the device with their massive revenue, but they want to have their cake and eat it to as always.
>>

>alve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat stated that the 2026 Steam Machine is at least on par with, if not better than, 70% of what Steam's users are utilizing on average.
The problem with that logic is that steam's users are made up of tons of different types of users from tons of different income levels. Millions of slavs using toasters for cs and dota aren't relevant, SEAmonkey and chink pc cafes are irrelevant because poor thirdies.
>>
>>109581877
It's for rich people so who cares?
The target demographic is Elon Musk snd gaben.

The problem with that logic is assuming that the vast majority of PC gamers buy powerful rigs and play titles that demand such specs. Most played Steam games are competishit that'll happily run on a 3060 equivalent.
>inb4 CS2 and DoTA owned
1) I got Valve Complete Back back in 2015
2) I tried DoTA around the same time and it stuck around
3) I don't play neither
>>
>>109582235

I remember checking that and seemed like it was more like "better or equal than 55%" (most of which badly needs to upgrade).

The steam machine is going to age very badly. It's already bad (basically E-waste) and the situation isn't going to get any better after the launch of PS6 and project helix.

It's difficult to get good data on that though due to issues with the steam hardware survey.
>>
>>109581877
It has AMD graphics cards which means it can't run Ais
>>
>>109581877
The "hate" is because it's neither fish nor foul. It's not a bad device. It's *mid*. It's not worthless, it's mid.

I would have preferred it to be low-end, basically a 720p device. but, understandably, they didn't think that was good enough, I get it.

But, it's also not a powerhouse.

imo a phatter one is to come.
>>
>>109582356
100% inaccurate.

>india<
>>
>>109582298
The gabecube is absolutely not meant for slavs who spend 16 hours a day playing cs2 while waiting to be drafted. The point is to bring the couch experience to pc, converting console gamers into pc gamers. You cannot play a competitive game like dota or cs2 on a gamepad, it doesn't work. The steam cube should be strong enough to run popular console games at an acceptable level of quality. It's strong enough for the popular live service games like fortnite and rocket league but that's only half of the equation. It needs to be strong enough to run the next gta, the next bethesda rpg, shit like that, because that's what the target audience for the cube plays.
>>
>>109582298
NTA, but the problem with steamie logic is assuming the number in the screenshot you posted are real. If even 50% of those current """players""" were real people and not bots I would be surprised. It is incredible how /r/pcmasterrace has such an ego when time after time it is shown it is literally full of third world tier poors using the family laptop.
>>
>>109582298
The 3060 was unironically a goat, and people don't appreciate this. But, AMD really has the whole sub-5080 level locked down on price alone.
>>
>>109582341
Fun fact: the steam hardware survey is just what you opt in to be posted publicly. You would have to be living under a rock to think they don't have the complete install base locally.
>>
>>109582401
yes but its going to be about the same percentages
>>
Steam deck was king of budgets.
It's sad how far valve has fallen.
>>
>>109581877
It's because the vast majority now on /g/ at least those who make drive by posts are non-whites who cannot afford to pay for these extra conveniences. They also simply do not understand why the "underpowered" aspect beyond the convenience stuff you've mentioned anyone would want it. They cannot comprehend that behind every purchase of valve hardware is a nail in the coffin of traditional locked down shitholer hardware like the playstation, nintendo, and microshit.

As a side note wouldn't it be great if you could add a slim 4k uhd drive to the front of the steam machine vertically that would play through emulation xbox/ps games and 4k movies?

It's been sold out since day one. Valve/Steam/Gabe has a massive amount of fanboys kind of like Nintendo and Apple.
>>
>>109582388
The Steam Machine is quite literally a bean counter design. They looked at the average PC from their Steam Hardware Survey, and that's how they got the specs for the Steam Machine. Then the top played games happen to be the type that run on the Steam Machine, cool. Buuut, Cyberpunk can run at ~60fps on this thing so it's not as bad as it might seem.

The real problem is the fucking price, Valve waited too long for this release. It's only appeal is for Valve fanboys like anon above mentioned.
>>109582389
Yeh, it was about the performance of a 1080, but at a much lower price point. No wonder Nvidia wants to bring that particular card back to the market, and if they manage to sell it at a reasonable price (lol) then people shouldn't turn their noses over it being a two generations old mid range GPU. It's perfectly fine for most games. I lived off of a 1060 before grabbing a used 3090 last year so I'm sitting on around four 1060's, or two 1080's worth of juice on a 1440p screen and I'm more than happy.
>>
Everyone would have been fine with it if it launched at 2025 prices.

valve had very unfortunate timing with the launch of the steam machine, it got cucked by DRAM price rises, could've been a good shitty budget pc but it's not worth it now, no one is buying computer parts these days unless absolutely necessary
>>
>>109582805
I honestly don't believe the whole story about RAM prices.
Even if they are paying the same premium as retail RAM (which is MASSIVELY overpriced even with the shortage) there is zero reason for a built desktop which has higher overhead for manufacturing, shipping and retail to even be comparable in price.

This either means Steam is really ass at procurement and somehow managed to secure a RAM "deal" where they pay more than the retard building his desktop or they priced it high just because.
>>
>>109582741
holy shit lmao

>>109582741

My GPU got 5.5 times better 1% low for that game (not the exact model/oc but should be about the same).

It doesn't "just work".

Plenty of games will not launch at all or will have various problems.

Performance is also quite bad.

Steam Mashine owner here:

point 1:

4chan /v/ and /g/ are group based boards: you have the nintentoids, the soinis, and an ammalgamation of pc users, some pirates, some linux fags, some windows fags, some steamies some not. the nintendoids and the soinis will make 80-90% of the negative threads because just like i have done in the past - shitted in their mouth, so do they need to do the same now - shit in my mount. it is a normal responce to being mocked for being a nintendoid or soiny - mock others back. As a result around 80% of all coverage of the steam mashine here is biased,
- thus you should listen to yourself first and firemost if you get a email about a reservation.

point 2:

the mashine plays all my games at like 60-120 fps and this is because they are good old games that do not use unreal slop engine. Civ 5/6, AoE2, SC2, CS2, Dota, Hearthstone, GTA 5, some other games - they are all old good games and they all run perfectly. The people who play modern slop will find the Steam Mashine to be underpowered but the truth is that they play slop,
- thus you should listen to yourself first and firemost if you get a email about a reservation.

point 3:

price to performance: I did the Excel sheet about building a pc: in my region the Steam Mashine beat all other options. Can expand more on this but the summariry is that unless i go and pay like 1500 euro +, i will not really build anything that is more applicable to my needs than the Steam Mashine. Even the options that were price comparable sucked and this was before considering that the Steam Mashine is small and sleek and I also wanted the Steam Controller,
- thus you should listen to yourself first and firemost if you get a email about a reservation.

I did my math based on the points above and i decided to listen to myself when i got the email to buy it, not listen to 4chan. I made the right decission. Now if you excuse me, I have a thread shitting on soinis to make on /v/.

right because I'm not actually trying to have a conversation? faggot newfag kill yourself. None of those arguments I am really even going to make. >>
>>109581877
>Bad price
That's literally it and the pricing isn't even Valve's fault. It'd be amazing if AI hadn't wrecked the entire concept of PC ownership. If you're a poorfag then even the Steam Machine is probably out of your reach.
>>
>>109581908
Subsidies aren't sustainable. Even Apple, Google, Samsung (the latter of which has their own foundary) has had to raise costs.

would you buy a pile of poop if it was priced reasonably? I don't understand why people say its a price issue, it can barely handle 1080p with modern titles. even if the steam machine was half its price you should just get a handheld pc and a dock instead, it'd play the same games and have more of a usecase in your home

You get that on every machine nowadays.
Install any OS that can start into a gamescope session with steam in its SteamOS mode (or configure any distro to do so) and you get that same experience. Unless your hardware config is full of bugs and also so obscure that the Linux kernel doesn't detect and patch those automatically, things will just work.

I can't believe you people just fall for what a company's marketing department tells you.
>B-b-b-but Valve are the good guys
LMAO.
The nicest thing I can say is that they got fucked over really back, timing wise, by the new hardware pricing and they now have to somehow justify how playing games at 1080@40fps with upscaling on the $1100 cube is somehow an acceptable deal when it seriously isn't.

Even in places with high electricity costs you can probably run that old PC with an RX 480 (I know you have one) instead for playing on your TV and by the time you even approach the break even point with the more efficient Gabecube, the Gabecube 4 will be out, with built in AI that plays your games for you.
>>
It amuses me to no end that terminally online neckbeards think the device is being made for them. It's very specifically made for people that want PC games in a console experience. Regular PC users aren't that and will never need a device such as this.

Brownoid seethe. Meanwhile, Valve is selling every one they can build because it's a neat little box as a companion to a high-end gaming PC.
