Is there anything still fun left to do with phones? I've got a VOIP number for fun and other than order pickup sometimes I basically never use it. It's like a few dollars a month and trivial to set up.

Phones were good when each call had a more or less dedicated analog copper wire and you could "hear a pin drop" on the other end, as the ads said. It's hard to explain how vastly superior it was talking on the phone in the analog days. Second, there is hardly anyone worth talking to now since a conversation is beyond the capability of the average Westoid at this point.

But to actually answer your question you could set up "party line" calls and invite people to join them. This is basically what Twitter spaces tries to do, but theirs is the worst thing ever made.

Pick a topic and a time and invite people to call in. Have a discussion with them.

an old school joke was to write "For a good time call: Jenny at 555-1212" in a bathroom at a bar or a payphone when those used to exist. enough time has passed where this might be fun again. find a bar or place where people you think are cool hang out and write the number on the wall and tell them to call you. if you have a clever line that makes it sound fun people WILL call you. Could be pretty fun

I remember tinkering with the Cisco CUCM. Setting up labs all day and playing with partitions and calling search spaces and dial plans and having a fun time breaking things.

I like this one. I also left my number in the image to see if anyone would call lol. I might start doing this though, and set up a voicemail with a womans voice.

They suck since they shut down the old POTS systems a few years ago
2022-23 at my dad's work
They NEVER got spam calls until (((AT&T))) forced them to go VOIP
And since we live in the south the power goes out every winter but you used to still make phone calls, not anymore. Latency is remarkably worse. it takes much longer to go from dialing to ringing, like 10 seconds sometimes. We somehow get worse EM interference. They forced us to abandon an objectively superior technology for an inferior one

Never knew this was a thing.
Little anti-social chud me from a few years ago graffiti'd my email address on interesting/obscure corners of my old campus.
Alas, no one ever found it, or if they did, no one decided to reach out, and alas, alas, I'm still but an anti-social chud.

That's cool. I do have a couple rotary phones linked to my cell via bluetooth with a Cell2Jack and Xlink BT. You can answer incoming calls with them and even dial out, though that lost its novelty pretty quick with mandatory 10-digit dialing. I mostly just have them because it's cool to hear real bells ringing when somebody calls.

if you are autistic about calls phone still is

They don't seem to be mean spirited or anything and he's fucking with what sounds like Canadians so it's basically a victimless crime.
