i would pay for youtube premium if they let me download video files or use third party clients while doing so. i don't mind paying but their first party apps are cancer.

Now that money is involved they have to pretend to be a legitimate service and count plays and pay royalties and whatever else so you're not allowed to keep the whole video on your computer without a little effort.
