Nothing like good clean crisp bitmap fonts.
>>
Crisp? Maybe. Clean? Definitely not. More aliasing jaggies than a hand saw.

Scalable vector fonts at high DPI are where it's at.

I don't like the kerning on that one, makes it a bit hard to read.
>>

This. Fonts are perfect in phones, PC monitors should be the same
>>

What font is this?

It's an oldie but goodie that I only was able to locate due to some Internet archaeology. Sony NEWS's default font. IIRC it was also used in the Sony Readers.

Comes in two sizes, small and large!
>>
>>109590499
Thanks! I remembered this being posted before but couldn't remember the details
>>
>>109590577
A very similar font can be seen on older SGI systems, before Irix, can't remember what they used to call their old OS. But it lacks Japanese characters, which this Sony font has. IMHO it probably came from Bell Labs or someplace, I think I've seen it on old Suns too.
>>
>>109590619
I can't judge the Kanji but the Latin letters are very nice imo, a lot more character to them than Ricoh's bitmap fonts
>>

Well, could you upload it?

That's copyrighted material, anon.

I didn't keep those files so I didn't have permission, because I didn't have the COPYING file which I would have needed to satisfy the terms of the license and allow me to redistribute it.

Didn't you even read what you just posted?
>>
Also I doubt those are the same files because a couple dozen KB file isn't big enough to hold all the Japanese characters.
>>
>>109590317
What is with lincux tards and fonts? I have never even though about it before retards like op started talking about it constantly. Is it just severe autism?
>>
>>109591241
OP here, I don't use Linux and that isn't a screeshot of "Linux" at all, why are you like this? Emacs runs on practically every computer OS made in the last 40+ years.
>>
I like bitmap fonts. they make every pixel matter.
for me, best one is vga 8x16.
>>
>>109591251
Emacs is linux coded, lol bro.
>>
>>109590317
I saw this shit literally months ago and you got assblasted like you deserved.
What drives you to try again? We're all the same anons, you aren't squeezing out a win.
>>
>>109591320
How did I get ass blasted? I always win these little Internet slapfights, always.
>>
>>109591302
I first used it on a Nextstep computer, so it's more Apple coded, in a way.
>>
>>109591054
Don't worry, you'll have enough time before your death to regret your lack of kindness.
>>
>>109591367
Ah yes, you did so it must be so. You are the universal trendsetter after all.
Are you genuinely autistic?
>>
>>109591398
Enjoy your new AI features in your OS, it will be magical I'm sure.
>>
>>109591413
What does that have to do with fonts, dude? Are you high?
>>
bitmap fonts are a product of technological limitations and should be left behind
saying this as someone who has compiled a customized version of bmfont for special purposes
>>
>>109591451
What about for teeny tiny screens and stuff like embedded?
>>
>>109591451
it will be left behind once there's something better.
can you name something better than vga 8x16?
>>
>>109591464

>>
>>109591484
there's only one of such on that webpage! ibm vga 8x16.

There are more pages... my VGA card was a Trident so I didn't have the IBM VGA 8x16 font.
>>
First VGA card I should say. Next I had a Voodoo 3, which has its own onboard VGA adapter and I don't know which font it uses.

Then I got a Powerbook G4 which had the ATI VGA font and you could get at it by booting into the OpenFirmware console, which was great for tinkering with the computer.

In fact most computers even today have a VGA or VGA-alike console mode with some built in fonts. If they have a display adapter at all.
>>
>>109591543
trident 8x16 looks very similar to ibm vga 8x16.
>>
>>109591581
In those days IBM would sue if the font was exactly alike, probably meant you cloned their VGA ROM and etc. directly so the dodgier Taiwanese companies would just clone the fonts and change a pixel here and there, the Europeans and Americans would actually create their own fonts sometimes.
>>
>>109591593
that's some funny business considering fonts are uncopyrightable in usa.
>>
love bitmap fonts. I used to use Montecarlo with the M+ Helvetica clone and my own custom fixed 7x14. Unfortunaltely it's too annoying to deal with in browsers and mixing aliased and antialiased fonts looks horrible
>>
>>109591666
It wound up being a huge pain in the ass to get emacs to finally use bitmapped fonts only, first it would try to scale them, sometimes they wouldn't show at all. Other times the line and character spacings wouldbe funky. It took me months to get it completely right because edge and corner cases kept popping up. Must have added 40 lines to my .emacs file.
>>
>>109591685
Yeah configuring fonts on emacs can be tricky. Every time I overhaul my configuration I end up using a different method and a different unit.
>>
Are you insane?
>>
>>109591864
Do you feel blame? Are you mad? Uh, do you feel like wolf kabob Roth vantage?
>>
>>109591864
What's crazy about comfy bitmapped emacs with old school authentic fonts?

he probably uses an ultra high-dpi screen where even fonts pulled out of one's ass with no regard to alignment or hinting look smooth and readable.

Not on a phone, you can literally see issues with "486" in bold 25pix font right there.
