don't forget to yay today
I update every 3 months
>AUR
don't have yay, no need.
>>109591369> name fag> microsoft edgemfw
>>109591369No, friday is update day.If you don't have a sys admin schedule for computer maintenance and upkeep then you're literally an animal.
>>109591438nay then
>>109591369isn't arch linux compromised?
>>109591698Things change in a ever-changing world, nigga.
>>109591397It's been over a year since I updated on gentoo
>>109591753afraid your cpu will overheat?
>>109591369Get your latest AUR malware package update, for free!!!!!
>>109591858>for freegonna paru -Syu rn, thanks for the tip
>>109591858that's the cool thing about ARCH LINUX, all the programs are free
I guess malware are technically programs
That's a dangerously outdated version of Redmond Chrome. Even if the package itself isn't compromised you'll get 0dayed by the first website.
>>109591698It was AuR so technically any distro using it could be.
>>109591369>Edge Stable packages are available as .deb and .rpm for Debian, Ubuntu-based, and Fedora, RHEL-based distributions. And as expected, it is also available in the Arch user repository.Having to use malware to install edge of all things is hilarious. Not a problem on debian based distros that download directly from microsoft as an extra repository.
>>109592515I don't agree with you.Microsoft only has a limited amount of resources to package software for GNU/Linux distributions and it targets the two most used package formats. That's fine. Luckily, it is easily possible to convert those packages to Arch. The download in the AUR is straight from Microsoft as well.
>>109592524>The download in the AUR is straight from Microsoft as well.Is it? I thought those were uploaded by arch users.
>>109591369If you don't use one of>apk>pkgsrc>xbpsand build whatever isn't on there locally into new packages which you install with the package manager and keep a private package registry, you have genuinely no idea what you are doing.
>>109592534do you even read your pkgbuilds or what?
>>109592540>>109591753sorry forgot>portage
>>109592548I don't use arch, this is why i'm asking
>>109592557aur just gives instructions to build or install the package, and you review the file with the instructions before you install it
>>109591369I do everything manually.
>>109592675yeah that's slow though
>>109592681cattle mindset
>>109591369i moved to fedora because of AUR issues
>>109592675same here, running LFS like a real man
>>109593509based
>Like fixed release distros.>Like immutable/atomic distros.>Fedora has both with plenty of experience in them.>Hate redhat and IBM so never use fedora.Guess I'll stick to debian, might look into opensuse leap and their micro OS.
>>109593585alpine
>>109593585>>109593623Unironically Alpine Linux. I've also been using it as a desktop and it's really nice.
>>109593623>>109593691How's the driver support? I tried it in the early days but most drivers didn't compile with the musl library. Is it any better now?
>>109593691why do people assume it's a joke? alpine is extremely polished and just works.>inb4 but muslplease learn to compile yourself
>>109593715I haven't had issues but just from gut feeling I assume you are a bit fucked if you have an nvidia GPU
>>109593720LuaJIT is still probably broken on musl for some targets.
>>109593727works on my machine
>>109591369>krashdelmao
>>109591369is it safe to yay yet
>>109593715The drivers that are in the repository just work desu. I also use amdgpu so I don't know if nvidia drivers would work or how to even set that up.The only drivers that I compiled from source were some drivers for an epson scanner, and it had some errors during the compile but I just changed one line of code and it worked. I don't think it was musl related either, probably the source code was just too old and newer version of compilers complain about things that they did not in the past. For programs like steam or discord you can just set up container or a chroot with bubblewrap or use flatpak and call it a day. I actually prefer this over running those binaries directly on my machine so this isn't an issue for me (I've also done this on Debian in the past). I've not tried running them directly on Alpine. There's gcompat for running binaries that depend on glibc but I've not tried it:https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Software_management#gcompatDepending on your desktop environment, you may run into some systemd dependent annoyances with them, like the system monitor not working out of the box on KDE for some reason. I believe it may be systemd dependency related (systemd cgroups) but I've not had the time to investigate it yet.If you come from a distribution like Debian which likes to pull all recommended/suggested packages, then you will have to adapt a bit with apk, as you'll have to install what you need yourself, apk won't pull things the packages don't strictly require. This means you will have to know which packages you need. Example: if you install cups and need to print pdfs directly using IPP Everywhere, you also want to install the cups filters and the cups pdf package.Just try it in a vm and see if you like it. It's a nice distribution and even if you don't run it on your desktop, it's really nice as a server OS. The next time I have to upgrade my Debian servers I'll be migrating them to Alpine instead.

>>109591369Thank you for beta testing KDE so I get to enjoy Kubuntu LTS
>>109591763he missed the winter update window
>>109591401and?
>>109592534it is a user repository, but it uses the official Microsoft .deb to build Edge on Arch
>>109591858>>109591698The AUR isn't in the default Arch installs, you morons. You have to be retarded enough to go hunting/install yay and other third party shit for it.Which at that point you DESERVE to be pwned if you're not having the DISTRO MAINTAINERS MANAGE YOUR PACKAGES.
>>109591369No need, I'm autistic and maintain my own set of pkgbuilds, managed with my own cli utility that auto bumps on package source updates, all hosted on my own server
why does anyone willingly use a distro besides NixOS or Guix?
>>109600264that shit is for nerds imo
>>109591526I do it whenever I feel the need. Or if tailscale dashboard tells me there's security updates.
>>109600264not having to learn yet another language used exclusively for package management.
>>109597542>542
>>109593720Do you mind taking the time to write about your usecase, what's good about alpine and what you don't like about it? It's fascinating.
>>109591369>Why yes, I check ALL the pkgbuilds for all of those. And what's more, I check all the binaries they pull in by reverse engineering them all in IDA pro. Of course I do. Using Arch safely and responsibly is totally possible.
I update dailyWhat is the point of using arch and only updating once a week?
>>109604382B4 I got a macbook I would update monthly. Every time I updated it would break a game or an app or bluetooth o algo and I'd have to spend an hour fixing it.
>>109591369i update daily it takes 15 seconds and usually 10 packages.
