hey, since this is a tech workers general I have a question for tech-savvy people. I recently bought a new pc from a seller who had apps like anydesk, gpu-z, aida64, crystaldiskinfo, and most importantly, a hard disk sentinel app with an activator that has a whopping 40/66 detections on virustotal. this guy has no negative reviews as far as I am aware, but I feel like this is a massive security risk no? we did an in person benchmark test with a cracked NFS 2019 game (from dodi repacks probably), after that he told me to not touch these applications and to specifically go to him for tech support, upgrades, etc... this obviously drove me insane, malwarebytes only detected the activator but I didn't run a full scan or enable the rootkits option myself.

I used the windows cloud reinstall with wipe all files and drives option, but I feel like it wasn't a full clean install since I still had nvidia control panel when using right click. someone also told me that only brings windows to factory settings and isn't enough if the malware modified any system files. scanned again with malwarebytes, full disk scan option that found nothing (no rootkit option tho, I forgot about it and was in panic), afterwards I plugged in an empty usb, put the windows media creation tool in (the installer says it wipes the usb before it puts itself in here, but it's common advice to get it from another clean PC which wasn't an option for me...), and deleted every partition until it just said "unallocated disk space" for all drives. didnt format before deleting partitions, but I suppose that's the same thing though? i've reinstalled gpu drivers, browsers, 7-zip, logged in to my discord account through firefox, steam account (has a family view code tho). it's been nearly a week and nothing has happened. I have not logged into any of my emails out of paranoia yet... am I safe? was worried about infostealers at first, but google says they don't latch onto usbs so worried about rootkits now...

If you want to solve your problem you need to do a windows full reinstall, follow up with security to perform a offline scan with boot under more options. Then full scan, reinstall windows again.

These companies operate on a huge loss, using fake money. At some point, someone is gonna want to get paid and they will rug pull. Suddenly, tokens wont be so cheap and agents will cost multiples more than a mid level dev. Companies will have no choice but to cut costs by hiring devs again, but the pay packet will be much less.

Best thing for you to do, is use AI to get better at development, use it as a personal tutor rather than a limb replacement. When the rug pull inevitably comes, you wont be left holding the bag.

Relatively new manager here, I have a direct report that I've worked with 1-2 years with already. She recently got promoted last year to senior but I think she's showing signs of burnout. Seemed a little gradual since last year I've seen her input a LOT less in meetings (she still gets her work done but nothing extra anymore nor actually asking questions about anything). Then one time she went relatively quiet and like "ghosted"ish (replied if it was urgent but otherwise most of the questions or inquiries just got dropped). After I talked to her about it (she says she's fine), she's just been acting stupid. Not in a snippy or thing way, but stuff that I'd expect her to do or handle, she's "pushing" back a lot.

I admit some of the work we do is vague but it feels like she doesn't even read her work anymore and just sends it to me and goes "Boss-man, can you read this and let me know if there's something I should do on my side? Thank you,"
How do I handle this? She was a top employee 2 years ago (which is why she got the promotion and it was just a title bump/pay increase with no added responsibilities) but I think the real shift happened after the first layoff and then started going downwards the more our projects that she initiated or worked on started getting paused/cancelled and I'll admit the current projects we're in aren't exactly all peaches and rainbows too, lots of vague responsibility and ownership, doesn't feel like anybody is leading the charge except the consultants and that's another can of worms I don't want to open.

She's def burned out. Whatever she says is shot down (while she is probably told that her contributions are valuable and expected), there's barely any vision behind the project, so why bother on the meetings? A lot of the times she mentions blockers, my boss usually gives her direction on where to go "you should ask X team, you should ask Y team" but then she'll just stop doing it. For example, there was a report we wanted on how many people we're onboarding and offloading but our system only keeps track of onboarding and not offloading (It's not an HR system), she gave us a report based on onboarding and said she couldn't get the offboarding data points because of system limitations. I was away that day but I heard they forced her to stay after hours because the business did sign offs with no notice to complete an integration. That's not enough to recover from burnout. Approach her, and give her at least 1 week, preferably 2 since you notice that she has been distant. Don't blame her for it, and let her know that you value her enough to not lose her. She might already be looking. Once you get that checked out it's pretty damn bad. Feeling like you're the only person that gives a shit, so why give a shit, is the last straw for most.
