/iemg/ Dogma Check
Tired of the hivemind? Here’s your prescribed sanity dose:

>Crinacle is not your priest.
Rankings are a guide, not divine scripture. Your ears > his spreadsheet.

>Harman and JM-1 ≠ perfect.
It’s a preference curve, not a law of physics. Some genres need deviation.

>Chi-Fi isn’t magic.
Great value, yes. Immune to QC issues and hype cycles? Nope.

>Graphs are not sound.
They don’t show staging, dynamics, or fit. Use your ears, not just squigs.

>BA ≠ metallic, DD ≠ perfect.
Implementation matters more than driver type. Always has.

>Meme sets aren’t the whole hobby.
If it’s not shilled 24/7, it might still be good. It's highly encouraged to form an original opinion.

>Disagreeing ≠ cope or deaf.
Let people like what they like without foaming at the mouth.

>Loud posts =/= smart takes.
Confidence without experience is just noise. Show graphs, impressions, or both.

>Cognitive dissonance.
When you're presented with a truth that threatens your entire perception of the world around you, your brain will simply refuse to process it.

This has been your scheduled break from pos groupthink.

Ok, looks like I have it. But it normal to have it and also have perfect extension up to 20k and even above?
Is there any medicine for that, should I even care is I live with it probably around 20years if not more and it's there but honestly stuff like phone chargers whine or someones breathing too loud is much more annoying
>>

Clanker begone.
>>
>>109598316
>I dunno dude how do you get a notch on specific frequencies huh? maybe because these specific frequencies are receiving higher energy than others. what a mystery. dumbass
do you think there would be no frequency specific hearing losses if there were no peaks? assuming people just listen too loud which people have always done. and that its all from iems and not working with machinery, guns and concerts etc etc
>>
>>109598391
>But it normal to have it
It's normal in a sense that some people do have it. But I guess it's relatively rare.
>also have perfect extension up to 20k and even above
That is also pretty rare but not unheard of.
I'd suggest to not earrape yourself with high frequency swipes anymore at all lol
>Is there any medicine for that
depends on what type of a tinnitus you have but most likely no.
>should I even care is I live with it probably around 20years
If it doesn't bother you too much not really. Also do not let it bother you too much.
>but honestly stuff like phone chargers whine or someones breathing too loud is much more annoying
enjoy it while you can lol high frequency hearing will go away sooner or later
>>
>>109598527
>do you think there would be no frequency specific hearing losses if there were no peaks
very likely actually
We know people get it worse with IEMs.
We know older IEMs had god awful tuning with fucked up peaks exactly where length modes will be. We know length modes are universal because of simple physics.
put 2 and 2 together and...
>and that its all from iems and not working with machinery, guns and concerts etc etc
well some of it might be from that but comparatively IEMs leave much more damage than speakers or openbacks

Has anybody here tried either and knows which one is worth the purchase?
>>
I tried to find proper studies about if people actually listen louder with IEMs but there are no consistent results
With poor isolating earbuds they do listen louder in loud environments tho.
https://pubs.asha.org/doi/abs/10.1044/1092-4388(2008/011)
musician do not listen louder than speakers tho (but can listen at lower levels cause of better isolation)
And if people do listen IEMs louder because "there's no reference" then destructive peaks will be even more damaging.
>>
>>109598899
both aren't worth

What do you guys think of iem bluetooth adapters?
Any models to recommend?
I came accross the TRN BT20 Pro but that's about all I know for now.
Possibly not expensive, I'm new to the hobby and just got my 7hz Salnotes Zero.
>>
>>109598899
just get the one with the nicer shell and/or plate. you can always just eq it to your target.
>>
>>109598937
Based on what exactly? Have you tried either?
>>
>>109598731
>very likely actually
there would be.
its curious how the 23 iem listeners in your paper had variation mostly around 4k which is typical for noise induced hearing loss in general. which could be caused by the isolation iems provide removing references as someone else pointed out. to conclude from this that all iems need eq is not putting two and two together
>>
Only listen to audio that negates needing to
>EQ length modes
>EQ HRTF
>EQ anything
Well looks like the hobby is solved. Just listen to audio that fills in the gaps. Easy.
>>
>>109598962

Somebody just made a crazy post on headphone.com forum

I suggest you retards read it but here's quick tldr
>dude got the HDB630 and got his mind blown by how things sounded both correct and out of head
>went on a wild goose chase mimicking headphones show to make another headphone sound the same
>achieved it by using DFHRTF and headphone measurements and a bunch of EQ related stuff
>final piece was binaural rendering
Though the HDB630 did it without any binaural renderings which is curious.
Speaking of IEMs achieving the same results with them might be much harder, since you’d need to shape your pinna effects for the FR at your eardrum which sounds like a nightmare thing to do
So if you are already somehow lucky (or delusional) enough to have IEM that gives you ACTUAL soundstage - congrats

Slop from the first line.
>A month ago I’d have told you the Arya couldn’t do bass like a sealed headphone. It can. It needed a spatial fix, not a tonal one, and every tonal attempt was compensation for a cue that was missing entirely.
And where would closed-backs get that spatial cue from huh?
>Every bass shelf I tried lifted the thickening at 100 to 400 Hz along with the weight, which is why each one traded warmth against openness.
>Angle matters here too. At 30 degrees the lower mid scoop is barely present. At 45 it’s the full three decibels. Part of why I preferred 45 by ear is that it separates weight from thickness more cleanly.
Is that it? He EQd with shelves only and couldn't add a dip? If yes then it's a hilarious harman victory again.
>>
>>109600118
HDB 630 doesn't have no harman dip and still gives him the effect. Who knows why he sure as fuck doesn't. But I guess it does tell us that you can EQ soundstage in after all
>>
>>109600201
My personal belief is that bass on openbacks is strong enough to leak from one ear to another. I completely made it up based on my personal openback headphone target having even bigger dip than harman.

so howlenght mode resonances can damage hearing? if its just few extra db does it only matter if u are listening at louder volumes?

Also how loud is too loud, like sometimes i can get excited and will turn that volume up but it was never at levels of night clubs, imax sound system or being near construction or farm machines kind of loud ( that stuff might be reason why i hear ringing when im in complete silience). Never went even close to that loud with headphones or iems.

>>
>>109607318
your understanding of those umbrella genres is too shallow
even jpop from 90-00 and 10-20 sound almost completely different from each other, have different harmonics emphasized, different feeling of attack and transient etc. and that's still over-generalization, if we go with case-to-case scenarios it will become evident than many weeb music artists have different methods and preferences pretty much all across the audible spectrum
and don't even get me started on EDM unless you can't hear the difference between shitty modern "edm" (big room, trap etc.) and trance, IDM or 80s eurodance
>>
>>109607316
I'd say vocal, and also the feeling of being able to hear some details from song that I didn't notice with the other IEM
>>
>>109607364
>many weeb music artists have different methods and preferences pretty much all across the audible spectrum
your understanding of weeb music sure is more astute than mine, but you're conceding that regardless of how diverse the artists tonal qualities are within those "broad" genres, it's not enough to seriously assume that covering those covers everything else.
nobody needs to be a weeb music expert to wrap their head around that.
>>
>>109607365
Truthear Nova if you want something bright, vocal-forward, bassy without mudding up the mids and can tolerate lean sound without much weight outside of the bass
Simgot EM6L if you want more warmth and impact
CrinEar Daybreak if you want studio-neutral sound with some excitement or maybe wait for the Nightfall
Etymotic ER2XR if you want to isolate yourself completely (they're really good btw)
some of them are above $150 retail so you may want to buy them used
for me Aful Explorer is also great for weeb and edm, but not necessarily for vocals, at least unless you crank up the volume - smooth bassy presentation

Hi bros currently using the hiby r5ii from ages ago
really hate android 8.1 and wanted a newer device

Was considering getting the Fiio JM21 4gb model but was wondering if the battery would be significantly lower
mostly using it for the car aux and when plugging into my speaker at work for 6-12 hours
however both of these I typically have it wired into power

I also occasionally go camping for a few days so would be using it with bluetooth headphones during these times

Is there a chance the next generation of these devices will launch soon? featuring even newer than android 13?

the pos itself sounds okay, nothing stands out. the soundcard has seven presets + custom (not downloading and apps, sorry). music mode is hard v shape, csgo/valorant preset is mid - treble forward. mic mute and noise cancelling buttons. call quality is fine, we. an hear each other fine and clear enough.
i paid the equivalent of 50usd, so 50usd usb-c dac with free pos? dunno, it's a pretty good value proposition for me, even if it's probably a 10 dollar pos, it's only 3.5mm and reliability is still pending. other than my personal comfort issue with the earpieces, it's alright. would rec especially with aliexpress coins and coupons. initial impressions, worth it.

modified my wireless HEDD D1 with a few more cable ties and 90-degree adapters and now there are no longer dangling wires that get in the way or scrape against the sides of the cups and make noise. Which Should You Choose?

Go with the CrinEar Daybreak if you prioritize reference-grade tonal balance, precise treble extension, and a lightweight shell for extended fatigue-free sessions.

Go with the Tangzu Wu Heyday if you want the fast transients and seamless coherence of a full-range planar driver, paired with extra low-end warmth and an all-metal chassis.

mr. graph makes the assumption that all audio will be affected exactly the same just by looking at a graph and assuming "too much on the graph is too much in the audio". that kind of advice overall is useless.
even though Daybreak has the most bass, it's coming from a DD in a hybrid, as opposed to a single planar trying to cover the entire frequency range.

Since S08 is a decent planar (seriously), get yourself a dongle DAC that at least has it's own physical volume control and you will have all your bases covered for powering all IEMs sufficiently. Keep the S08, totally worth it.
>is it the Ohms that power it or something else?
S08 has a high enough sensitivity rating for a planar but it is low impedance. you don't need a huge upgrade, just something like I mentioned that will cover all IEMs you throw at it. doesn't have to be a beefy desktop amp/DAC at all.

>>
>>109617767
Wireless ANC stuff is sold more as an electronic product rather than audio product. It's closer to smartphone or tablet than wired headphones. That's why lots of tech bros are buying new generation every year or so so they can go off to new better app, ANC performance or other bullshit features.
I had conversation with such guys and even showed them frequency response of product they wanted to buy, it was abysmall, +15db over harman from 20hz to almost 300hz and peaks and dips in treble with +20db difference, entire treble was also boosted by +10db over harman. That shit based on graphs alone was borderline hearing damage.
But they still defended that headpos because design is nice, app is nice, it's new so software updates are still there and tuning, tuning is just classic v shape fun and everyone hear music differently and they like it how it sound.
U just can't argue with them because most people don't care about how close FR is sticking to given target, they just listen to music and mark of quality for them is boomy bass and extra features like apps, anc and so on
>>
>>109617614
About 10ms. Not inherent, it's lower with ASIO. Bluetooth is 60ms in the best case, 100+ms typically. Though some DACs can have internal latency, I heard qudelix has 50ms, didn't verify.
>>
>>109618050
It's tied to USB controller they used. My dap fiio M21 have option of working as USBC DAC but they didn't used something to handle that data, calculations are done on soc and latency is 0.5s, so it's useless for anything other than listening to music or podcasts
>>
>>109617936
>they just listen to music
that's the whole point. because they're not sold on a religious farce of "listening correctly" and know how to simply enjoy themselves with no forced bullshit expectations or rules. there are no prerequisites to simply enjoying.
fortunately for them, they won't have to live the rest of their lives crippled with the fear of enjoying "wrong" and being ridiculed by arrogant, maniacal megalomaniacs that are driven by the need to domineer and dictate how they should enjoy their lives.
You can only pity the fools who's sole passion is to take their rage and insecurities out on others as they are utterly incapable of admitting to being wrong, about anything, ever.
It's tragic to think of being that fucked up for so long with no chance of escaping self-absorption, ego and overthinking.
>>
>>109618157
normalfags buy whatever is overly advertised to them, thats why all u seen for a few years were beats when they outspent coke on advertising, the modern anc wave is a mix of that, performative tech and ignorance
if all people want is to listen to music thats fine, but being a goy and buying horrible overpriced products because they look epic or are perceived to be elite is retarded
that way of consumerism is why nothing has to be good to sell well anymore, and i've seen it many many times, usually they feel stupid when they realized it, it's not like any of this shit is cheap, sonys gay anc is what $600?

obviously people have different fr tuning preferences but lets not confuse that with goy billy and his xm6 trash for lolicore in a silent basement, or randesh and his airpods that aren't even on so people think hes wealth unironically

fiio ka11 = 23 milliwats @300ohm

Just a nice excerpt from a book I am reading about the accurate reproduction of audio.

too bad headphones are not loudspeakers
>>

Obviously headphones still reproduce spatial information encoded in the recording.

they need to be competently designed first

hello, i just checked the shopping guide, these 3 are recommended in the 20 to 100 dollars section
>Tangzu Wan'er S.G 2 (mild V) - $20
>Tanchjim Bunny DSP (mild V~) - $20
>EPZ Q1 Pro (Harman) - $35
is the first one good enough for gaming? or should i pick one of the other two?

>>109625152
Yes. That's why I quoted “with competently designed loudspeakers. That's literally the qualification Toole makes in his literature..

The headphone equivalent is a competently engineered transducer with controlled FR, good channel matching, low enough distortion, no gross resonances, etc.
I'm not saying Toole's loudspeaker criteria can just be transferred onto IEMs. I'm pointing out that the spatial information is still in the recording and the headphone is reproducing that information.
>>
>>109625157(me)
also, are there any headphones for like 30$?

>The headphone equivalent is a competently engineered transducer with controlled FR, good channel matching, low enough distortion, no gross resonances, etc.
Wrong.
>I'm not saying Toole's loudspeaker criteria can just be transferred onto IEMs. I'm pointing out that the spatial information is still in the recording and the headphone is reproducing that information.
Only if it's "competently designed" which it isn't
In the first place we do not have enough information and studies about headphones to say anything about their reproduction of soundstage outside that they do not have a normal soundstage.
Trying to extrapolate how speakers work on headphones which do not work at all like speakers is foolish
>>
>>109625284
in general any POS should be fine for games.
your mileage may vary because of anatomy but it's like whatever
there's also truthear gate which has nice eartips and cable
>>
>>109625287
>we do not have enough information and studies about headphones to say anything about their reproduction of soundstage outside that they do not have a normal soundstage.
doesn't mean:
>Trying to extrapolate how speakers work on headphones which do not work at all like speakers is foolish.
I'm saying that competent headphones still reproduce spatial information from the audio itself.
>>
>>109625303
to hear sound stage information you need to be able to hear sound stage in the first place... which headphones do not have... because they are diffuse field devices.
>still reproduce spatial information from the audio itself.
how do you know that
>>
>>109625270
It baffles me how u guys are missing headpos gold just because manufacturer is complete fraud in iems space. They make really good planars and cash grabs like chu2 or that new cringeacle colab.

>>

Because the L/R channels contain different signals and the headphone drivers reproduce those respective signals to the respective ears.
>>
>>109625319
Para, para 2, skyland, cosmo, venus - all of them are excellent with pad rolling/EQ tho I have to say, industrial design and comfort could be better

>>109625312
“soundstage” is a perceptual. “spatial information” is information in the signal and they're not the same.

WELL not competently designed then

Hope I am being clear here. I said,
>“L/R channels contain different signals and the headphone drivers reproduce those respective signals to the respective ears.”
That's not a conjecture. That's literally how stereo headphone playback works. What is a conjecture is the jump from that physical fact to a claim about the subjective perception of spatial location.
I have already separated those things when I said spatial information isn't soundstage
You're making two different claims and neither follows from the other and you still haven't given your definition of "what is "competently designed headphones" as you simply called mine, "wrong".
>>
>>109625381
it's a simple fact
>>
>>109625385
>That's not a conjecture. That's literally how stereo headphone playback works
Hm? Are you a headphone maker? Researcher? If not then who are you citing?
>What is a conjecture is the jump from that physical fact to a claim about the subjective perception of spatial location.
word salad. read some studies instead
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7488874/
>I have already separated those things when I said spatial information isn't soundstage
Again who are you citing?
>You're making two different claims and neither follows from the other and you still haven't given your definition of "what is "competently designed headphones" as you simply called mine, "wrong".
Who are we to define what "competently designed headphones" is? That's why you are reading toole's book about loudspeakers instead of headphones. Because it doesn't exist.
It is also quite problematic to make a "competently designed headphone" because headphones will behave differently on different heads and it is not mitigated at all.
>>
>>109625413
>Who are we to define what "competently designed headphones" is?
Who are you to say what it isn't?
>>
>>109625416

>>
>>109625427
>either quote a study that defined it or fuck off?
Quote a study that explicitly states, "soundstage in headphones doesn't exist"
when, again, I explicitly split that term from "spatial information", which you are being ignorant of.
>>
>>109625438

>>
>>109625448

>>
>>109625438
>Quote a study that explicitly states, "soundstage in headphones doesn't exist"
Shouldn't you have the same opinion tho? If spatial effects are dominated by the recording then where is a soundstage in the headphones?
>>
>>109625449
are you conceding already?
>>
>>109625456
>Most sounds originate from a physical source located outside of the head and, when received with open ears in the natural world, are generally perceived to be externalized. When sounds are presented diotically via headphones, however, the perception is generally that the sound images are inside the head, or internalized (Jeffress & Taylor, 1961).
>>
>>109625458
>Shouldn't you have the same opinion tho? If spatial effects are dominated by the recording then where is a soundstage in the headphones?
You're changing the burden of proof.
I said the recording contains spatial information and the headphone reproduces that information where the listener's perception produces a spatial perception.
>>
>>109625463
what? ran out of tokens or something?
"I explicitly split that term" when it's coming from a 60 IQ nobody is not a good argument, you get that?
>>
>>109625469
I'm just asking?
>I said the recording contains spatial information and the headphone reproduces that information where the listener's perception produces a spatial perception.
and yet somehow there's still no soundstage in headphones.
Again your problem is that you are using information from speaker research for headphones without any knowledge at all.
>>
>>109625465
Thanks for condeding, anon. You just reinforced the distinction I've been making all along. It still doesn't say, “headphones do not reproduce spatial information” or, "“headphones have no soundstage at all", anywhere.
The distinction still stands. Spatial information is in the audio signal first. You couldn't cite the paper saying “headphones do not have soundstage. Just a citation that says, "You instead cited a passage saying headphone sound images are generally perceived as internalized", which aren't the same thing.
>>
>>109625470
I accept your concession, then.

>>
>>109625465
im thinking about open backs, because there that perception that sound is outside you head is stronger than with iems, for me. So in other words:
- with iems soundstage is still present for me is bit like my brain was imagining a soundstage, i could say everything is playing inside my head
-with openbacks there is sometimes that feeling like sound comes from places outside my head, maybe thanks to openness some sound gets from one earcup to other ear via air around ur head
i think size of soundstage (or rather my perception of size) is simillar between them but openbacks are more convincing in that the sound actually comes out physically in the space around you and is not just an illusion created by the brain

>>109625538
How bout you tell me explicitly where it says, "Headphones don't reproduce spatial information."
You can't because it doesn't.
>"One person's ears over one week, not a controlled study."
the author specifically states.
literally who? I'm reading a Floyd Toole book and you've turned this into an argument you can't even wrap your head around because you're too busy making assumptions.
And you worship the dude lol

>>
>>109625544
>How bout you tell me explicitly where it says, "Headphones don't reproduce spatial information."

So you can't explain how dude is getting external soundstage with specific headphones and not the others despite using same tracks with exact same spatial information? I see I see
>>109625550
Agree with what exactly?
>>
>>109625554
The same headphones can produce different spatial percepts because the playback system determines what spatial cues hit the ears.
That's literally what the article you linked shows with the HRTF/binaural processing.
I never claimed the recording alone determines the entire spatial percept, I said spatial information in the recording and the resulting soundstage are different things. You ignored that from the beginning.
>>
Speakers and headphones are playing the same audio.
Headphones do not have a soundstage
Speakers do have a soundstage
B-but it's dominated by the recording!!!
You are so fucking stupid
>>
>>109625571
>B-but it's dominated by the recording!!!
Yes, exactly why the question is how differently the same recorded information survives the playback chain.
I accept your concession again
>>
>>109625562
>I never claimed the recording alone determines the entire spatial percept,
Oh and now backtracking started. You accepted so many concessions and still need to backtrack
>Dominated by the recording.
>“The important localization and sound-stage information is the responsibility of the recording engineer, not the loudspeaker.”
>"The recording itself contains much of the spatial information you're perceiving."
So are you just posting offtopic? or maybe actually stop being a coward and acknowledge what you were obviously insinuating?
> I said spatial information in the recording and the resulting soundstage are different things. You ignored that from the beginning.
Why do you think THIS is a point of contention? Literally that's not the problem, you made it so because you can't answer a couple simple fucking questions/
>>
>>109625582
So now spatial information does not survive the playback through headphones?
I thought you were against that idea?
>How bout you tell me explicitly where it says, "Headphones don't reproduce spatial information."
>>
>>109625597
Projecting much?
You handed me your ass and getting THIS emotional/insulting while glossing over specific distinctions that were made as you conflate different things is a category error on your part.
Dr. Toole wouldn't be too happy with you, seeing how deep you dug your hole

>>109625610
Headphones are not loudspeakers. "competently made headphones" do not exists. Localization and sound stage information is the responsibility of the recording engineer simply because loudspeakers have positional queues and sound stage by default. And headphones don't.
So everything you quoted is 1. offtopic 2. irrelevant
and 3. you have no idea what you are talking about still

The soundstage comes from the room. No room - no soundstage, simple as, no matter how "well designed" your headphones or speakers are.
>>
>>109625706
>no matter how "well designed" your headphones
your premise is that "well-designed" headphones exist after all.
concession accepted again LOL
>>
>>109625720
They don't exist. If they existed they still wouldn't have soundstage, because well-designed speakers in anechoic conditions don't have it either.

Now that's shakespeare.
So we went from "it's dominated by the recording" and "headphones reproduce that spatial information" to "playback system determines"
hilarious
Maybe next you'll figure out what "spatial queues" do the recordings contain and why it does fuck all to soundstage in headphones
>that's on you. you lost the plot entirely and it was hilarious this time. you are so sweet

Headphones do not have a soundstage
Spatial information in the recording is irrelevant
