I set up jellyfin purely for the convenience of being able to rewatch like 15 movies and 20 tv shows. And its a matter of minutes if I want to watch a specific movie I don't have. I can even search ptp at work from my phone thanks to wireguard, add it to qbitorrent using an app, ssh to my server with termux, hardlink it to my movies directory and watch on jellyfin.

Then I look at my private tracker torrents. I've treated them exactly the same way: downloaded them, left them seeding, and kept them available for months or years. Yet many of them have 0 bytes uploaded, and others might have something like a 0.4 ratio.

The difference isn't that I'm unwilling to seed. I'm seeding the same way on both. The difference is simply whether other people happen to download from my particular seed.

And that's the problem with using ratio as the measure of contribution.

If the goal is to encourage people to seed their downloads, then "I downloaded it and kept it available indefinitely" should count as meaningful contribution. I can control whether my client is seeding. I cannot control whether someone else decides to download from me.

Instead, ratio requirements incentivize people to:

prioritize torrents that are likely to generate upload;
avoid downloading obscure material;
farm ratio;
use seedboxes or other high-bandwidth setups;
and potentially delete torrents that aren't generating upload.

That's pretty much the opposite of what I think a tracker should encourage.

I have unlimited internet and don't mind leaving everything I've downloaded seeding indefinitely. But if the system eventually tells me that my ratio is too low because nobody downloaded from me, what exactly was the point of keeping those torrents seeded?

Ironically, the trackers where I'm not required to maintain a ratio are the ones where I have some of my highest upload ratios, simply because I can download something I actually want, leave it running, and not worry about whether it will "pay back" my download.

We need people who contribute new content way more than we need just another long haul seeder. But if you are one there are still rewards for being one depending on the tracker. I'm sure most of this is covered in depth in the wiki. But consider this a first draft for a simplified explanation. If any other /ptg/ posters have something to add just reply. It's time to put all this in writing.

We have 3 competing economic systems for non-hard economy trackers. On general trackers like TL and IPT it's the pay2win system. On cabal and cabal adjacent trackers it's either ez bonus point mode or gambling/gaming mode.

General trackers:
Large torrents are freeleech. There are rules requiring you to seed them for a specific amount of time. Generated bonus points can buy buffer but the rates are cucked. A better use for your bonus points is removing hit and runs from your account on any torrent you choose. Tracker economy is built around trapping neons into tanking their ratio then paying to get their account back. But simply paying for 1 month of seedbox service and hoarding a fuckton of buffer is cheaper and a better use of your money. If you do this start with freeleech then hit popular torrents like daily TV episode releases from scene groups.

Cabal trackers:
Ez mode: PTP/HDB, naturally. Seeding large amounts of data gets bonus points that can easily be converted into TBs of buffer or used for an extended period of personal freeleech that can fill up a drive which leads to even more BP generation. Cross seeding from general trackers to PTP/HDB or BTN to HDB makes shit ez as can be. Being set4life couldn't be easier.

Gambling/gaming mode:
Trackers like BHD, GGn, EMP introduce games you can play with your bonus points and make converting into buffer or similar things more cucked, in line with what the general trackers give you for your hard earned BP. Some people love this stuff and discuss it on /ptg/ endlessly. Others not so much.

Don't get me wrong. HDB was my main tracker for like 20 years, and many people consider HDB is prestigious. However, during the last few years, I had no interest in HDB anymore.
