Software engineering is doomed

> be me, autistic software dev with an MS in Computer Science from a mid-tier uni
> live out in the middle of bumblefuck nowhere far away from any major city
> been fully remote at the same small company since the covid era (> 5yoe)
> doing standard backend slop in nodejs and php
> the company is quietly preparing for layoffs
> once a month some recruiter on LinkedIn slides into my DMs for an initial HR screening
> it's not even the actual technical interview, just the warmup before a multi-stage procedure (theory interview, system design interview, leetcode and live coding stage)
> can't answer half the questions because they're completely useless esoteric trivia that has zero relevance to real-world coding, even on highload projects
> obviously get ghosted
> can't find a job anywhere, not even getting callbacks for initial interviews
> spend my free time actually focusing on CS theory, building small hobby projects in C, C++, Go, and Rust
> literally zero stars across all my GitHub repos
> can't even land an entry-level gig paying minimum wage

A welder with 1 YOE unironically has better career prospects and a higher ROI on their trade school diploma than I will ever see. My experience is completely worthless.

How did it get this bad. It's so over.

Because AI replaced it.
As you said, go become a welder instead. Computer jobs are the new Horse and Buggy rider.

Those programmers are shit.

Ironically enough, the well-compensated SWE jobs at those AI companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) themselves use Leetcode stuff in their interviews.
>>
>>109600923
This. It is still next to impossible to find a good developer. It's just an ocean of shit. No wonder AI is popular.

Give us some examples of "useless esoteric trivia" that gets you filtered.

Thank you saar.

1. In what order are process.nextTick(), Promise callbacks, setTimeout(..., 0), and setImmediate() executed?
2. Why does an exception inside an async function become a rejected Promise even when no Promise was explicitly created?
3. What is backpressure in Node.js streams, and what happens if you ignore it?
4. Which Node.js operations actually use the libuv thread pool, and which ones are handled by the operating system?

I totally understand that /g/ experts can answer these questions without any prior preparation or googling it, but still, be honest with yourselves.
>>
>>109603441
1. setImmediate() = nextTick() then promise callback then setTimeout(,,0)
2. Because async is syntactic sugar for promises
3. idk
4. Idk what this means. Everything on the event loop would be handled by libuv? If you work with fs or network sure that's handled by OS but ends up being piped to libuv
>>
>>109603441
I'd expect most Node.js devs to know the answer to 2 without having to look anything up but the other 3 definitely seem like things you'd only permanently keep in mind after dealing with a very particular problem or bug.

True but also AI is cheaper than jeets at producing identical slopcode to jeets.

It follows that AI is the new jeet.

Oceans of shit, everywhere.

Go join the Ukrainian foreign legion. They need cyber guys. Or get a trade.

5 years in a cheap zone means you already own your home and probably have enough for a small investement
...
right???

When I was still interviewing I could answer shit like this for Java.
Though back then async stuff was less important.
>>
>>109603441
I've only dabbled with node, but these look much more relevant questions when I think of my C++ interviews.
>>

if javascript is your main you should know how the event loop works.

Have you considered founding your own startup?
>>
>>109606668
I can easily write code for a startup, set up an online payment system, host the project on a Linux server, but I don't know exactly what my startup will do. Absolutely every startup idea out there has already been taken. Nobody needs yet another startup like an "online service for scraping prices from eBay"

>Absolutely every startup idea out there has already been taken.
Got to disagree with that one. The best approach is to scratch an itch you have felt yourself, a shortcoming or a problem youhave met several times. The trick is to be sufficiently irritable and unreasonable.
Go for it.

I can't get over how codecels programmed their own obsolescence with AI. Darwinism in action.
>>
>>109600781
What isn't doomed, if not enough people become convinced that AI shouldn't be allowed to exist?
