Even if you stream it, if it connects to internet, it's still collecting data and sending it to LG. Every LG TV right now is a wiretap in your home, using your conversations and content match ID to sell to AI data training companies.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/technology/consumer-electronics/is-your-lg-tv-listening-to-conversations/ar-AA29VXHK

Even if you don't care about that because nothing-to-fear-nothing-to-hide, they have also been caught pushing updates to their TVs to take functionality away after you buy them.
https://www.classaction.org/lg-tv-refresh-rate-lawsuit
They're in hot water right now over that shit.

Basically just don't get an LG TV. Since everyone is doing it, though, get a TV and don't connect it to the internet. Get a firestick or a Jellyfin setup and stream through that instead, only using the TV as an output for the picture. Or just accept you're being spied on and LG could push an update to your TV that breaks it when they want you to buy another, and get whatever you want because this is schizophrenic nonsense since no one cares about you specifically.

Which sites? If they have Cloudflare protection, etc, then that might explain it returning HTML. You may have to figure out how to import browser cookies into it (it's possible but I won't explain how since it's kinda a pain)

how do i fix the picture being cut off at the edge on my crt? nothing ive tried in the windows settings or the nvidia drivers fixes it.
>>
>>109610123
Look for overscan / underscan in the display settings
>>
>>109610144
i tried that in nvidia control panel and nothing changes
>>
>>109610123
what equipment are you using? i assume that's a tv. crt tv's are supposed to overscan, that's normal. when outputting to a tv using a computer you basically need to send an underscanned picture to it, this used to be something you'd do in your gpu control panel though idk if any offer that as an option anymore. if you're using an active box of some kind to convert the signal then that may be where you need to configure this instead.
>>
>>109610251
ive a random box off amazon with hdmi on one end and rca on the other theres not really any settings to change on it. is there a software fix or do i just need to buy a different converter?
>>
>>109610254
i suppose the question is; is this actually a problem? like i said, your picture is what it's supposed to look like. if you're playing old games or old tv shows, they will look as intended as they were designed with overscan in mind.
doing it in software is an option, that is reducing the size of the display virtually and drawing a black border around the picture, though i only know how to do that in x11 (linux) off the top of my head.
>>
>>109610254
meant to say aliexpress not amazon, brain fart, sorry
>>
>>109610269
>is this actually a problem?
yeah if i full screen my emulators i can see like health or super meters and shit sometimes
>>
>>109610254
>>109610269
oh and if you're wondering why your gpu underscan isn't working, it's likely because it works by adjusting the timing of the signal, which may not work with an active converter since it will be re-timing the signal after scaling the picture.

>>109610276
check your emulator settings to make sure they aren't cutting off the overscan area themselves. some emulators may do this to simulate using a real old tv because otherwise some games may have annoying artifacts around the edge of the picture that is supposed to be cut off by the tv's own overscan

My nine year old laptop has finally broken, the screen is filled with pink and green lines.

Regardless of whether it can be fixed, I want to backup my files before I try to do anything. The issue is, any fucking time i try to transfer large files from my computer to a USB Or Portable Drive, not only does it take hours, they end up corrupted afterwards.

What do I do with this? The files cannot be corrupted.

take the drive out, plug it into another machine and make an image of it using ddrescue
>>
>>109611063
Anon, that doesn't solve the "I want to save my important files I absolutely cannot lose before messing with the internals of the laptop"
>>
>>109611091
yes it does, it's the best thing to do with a machine in clearly bad condition. i'm not saying to try to fix it before backing it up, i'm saying quite the opposite, back it up first before even continuing to use/try anything with the machine itself

I have one of those stupid modern samsung tv's with only 2 hdmi ports and e ARC. The tv is connected to a set of bookshelf speakers by optical cable to the amp.
For some reason, only one of the two hdmi ports works for video and still sends audio out through the speakers (Maybe only 1 port has arc idk).
Is there a way I can get 4 hdmi sources (4k bluray player, game console, etc) connected to this tv at the same time while still getting audio out through the speakers? Anything that looked like it might work for 4k and mentioned arc specifically with enough ports was $200+.

Am I just overthinking this and one of the cheap $30 4k ones will do?

it's possible, hotmail is hella old and from the era that had the most email spam
what you can try is to go into your hotmail account's settings and create a new alias with the @outlook.com domain (that way you keep all your emails and stuff, and can still send/receive using your original address), then when sending emails set the "from" address to that alias
if it turns out to work better, you might even switch the outlook alias to be your default/main one, while keeping the original alias
even with the most free/unpaid hotmail account you should be able to use up to 10 aliases

Re-asking my problem since someone might be able to know what's up with it.

My pc can't rip or play CDs. Whenever I try to rip or play one the playback is crackling and ripping is slow due to much error correcting that doesn't correct anything, the EAC error boxes are completely red. It's not the disks because I tried playing and ripping them on another pc and they work. It's not the drive since if I connect it to another pc it works perfectly. It's not the OS since I tried multiple (Arch Linux, Linux Mint, and Windows 10). It's not the Sata cable or the power supply cable since I tested those. I tried Sata mode RAID instead of AHCI and nothing. DVDs rip and play completely fine and VCDs, while being a bit buggy, play good enough. The only things remaining are the Motherboard or the CPU itself. I'm using a Gigabyte B850 WIFI6 with the BIOS fully updated and a Ryzen 5 9600X.

Alright. I just bought a motorola edge 2024 since my moto g7 power took a shit on me. I am going to use it stock android until the warranty goes out and the phone loses official support. How are these? Also, is F-Droid security fucked, or is this article FUD?
https://privsec.dev/posts/android/f-droid-security-issues/
I am honestly wary of this article because it recommends sticking to the Play Store although there has been genuine malware on it that has received millions of downloads.
Seems like GrapheneOS devs recommend against it, too, but I am pretty wary of them, as well. I see Obtanium recommended as an alternative, but it looks more like an updater rather than a full app store. I want an app store. There is also Accrescent, but it looks like it's in alpha, and I can't even see what's available on it. I've read the archives, and some posters mention that the selection is limited.
Any ideas?

lz4 is about twice as fast to compress / decompress as zstd, which also means lower latency. It's good for cases where you only need zram to be <=1.5x physical memory.

842 is there because it's hardware accelerated on POWER.

Idk why lzo is still the default other than it always was.

>>109626279
>Largely depends on your processing power
Latency penalty scales with CPU speed, so not really. It's mostly a question of how much compression you need.

use lz4 when you need top speed, zstd otherwise. for ram compression depending on the use-case, lz4 is a good default. lzo is just lz4 but not as good

I'm trying to set up a Radicale server on my Linux PC that can sync with my phone, and I'm at the point where I can open localhost:5232 and 127.0.0.1:5232 in a browser and calendar client, but 192.168.???.???:5232 returns a "connection failed" error on both the PC and phone. On the other hand, when I run a live server in VSCode on 192.168.???.???:5500, it works on both devices. Is this a problem with Radicale or some network config on my PC?
>>
>>109626919
is port 5232 open on the linux box?
is the radicale server configured to listen on 192.168.x.x or 0.0.0.0?
some servers may listen only on localhost/127.0.0.1 by default either just as a safe default or if they're expected to be used locally or behind a proxy. in radicale's case it wouldn't surprise me if they did that partly because they expect most users to host it behind a web proxy in order to add https to it

>>109627335
Your friend is wrong, you're not damaging anything with compressed air so long as you're unplugged from power (make sure to hit your power button after unplugging to discharge remaining electricity) and hold your fans still (because some with copper elements can generate electricity from rotation).
>>
>>109627335
Your friend is full of shit. Unplug it, press the power button to drain the rest of the power, touch something grounded, and then spray it down from top to bottom, ensuring that you hold the fans while doing so. Then remove the heat sink, dust the crap out of it, and wipe the bottom with a paper towel with rubbing alcohol to remove the old thermal paste, do the same to the top of the CPU. Let it dry, apply new thermal paste and put it back together.

If it fits on a rectangular screen, and I burn it on a dvd, will it automatically crop when I pop it into the dvd player, or will I have to manually crop it into a program? Or is it just meant to be rectangular on screen and blacked out on the top and bottom of the screen?

Put Linux on a flash drive. Distro doesn't matter. See if you can see the drive there. You can use something like gparted to look at the partitions in a graphical manner. Linux tends to be more tolerant of things being a little broken.
If you can see your C: partition, start by copying anything important to another drive, then try using efibootmgr to create a new boot option pointing to Windows' bootloader. Hopefully you're good at that point. I've sometimes seen boot options disappear from EFI firmware for a variety of reasons, so that might be all it is.
You can try using sgdisk to copy the backup gpt headers to primary, if you can't see the partitions but can see the drive.
If you can't see the drive you might be cooked. Try moving it to a different computer if possible.

Can I get some recommendations for cheap and uber lightweight headsets that have a good microphone built in? My ancient logitech headset is finally too beat up to justify using and I was hoping to find something a bit better with the same form factor.

My main use case is primarily for voice calls while continuing to use my normal speakers for audio out, having decent sound wouldn't hurt either but it's not my #1 priority. I have tried normal free-standing desk mics but they always give me feedback even when using krisp on shitcord so that's a no-go if I'm not using headphones. My ears are unfortunately really sensitive to a lot of headphones so being light and relatively open are my main priority outside of the microphone quality.

I saw Koss Portapros mentioned before here and they make one with a microphone, would anyone reccomend them specifically? I know my use case isn't the norm but they are within my budget (which is probably $70 max) and they're are the only ones I've seen so far in a video with microphone output that doesn't sound like it came straight out of a jeet call center.

What are the steps a retard like me can take to do my own diagnostics?
(After the lockup, I have taken the computer apart for cleaning and paste reapplication, reseated my RAM and drive cables and all.)
>>
>>109645011
Does windows' event viewer have any error/warnings other than a power off event?
>>
>>109645031
Don't really know how to read the event viewer... but there were only these up until the moment of the lockup. The critical is me holding power button.

I do believe so... this sort of thing has never happened before while I was using the PC. Got me shooked.

I hope it's just a case of unplugging and replugging things and a bit of cleaning.

hey hey people I got an question.
I downloaded Localsend so i could transfer files from my phone to the pc because i cant seemingly get bluetooth working on my current distro.
But i am unable to send files from the phone to pc.
>picrel for the errors.
Looking them up i only get "wifi issues" for results.
but I can still send files from the pc to the phone with no issue, so i doubt that its an wifi issue.

any of you have any idea what could cause this?

maybe you got caught by a random single-event upset
unless this starts happening more frequently I wouldn't worry about it

Can you people tell me already if I actually should kms or not. Not joking. LLMs already try to talk me out of it, but the reasoning they use is really weak imo, it's clear that it's just their conditioning. The reason for kms are those:
1. I want to be a cis woman, but I was born male and I don't want to be male under any circumstances
2. I was born in a shithole country (Russia) and I don't want to live in a shithole country. I want to live in a developed (first world) country.
3. I'm a retard who has no real skills other than software dev, so immigration is de facto non-existent to me because why would any employer hire a foreigner over a local? This might've worked before, but with the current job market, the immigration through software dev might (or might not) be over for good.
4. Russia, of course, will never be not a shithole.

So in my opinion it is reasonable, since effectively both of these reasons I will never be able to fix (I will never be a woman and will never live in a non-shithole), and both cause me suffering. But LLMs and redditors tell me I'm wrong.

That's retarded to do. You're gonna have to accept you're trans and shit, and get on hrt. Which isn't too hard in russia I think? There're a bunch of sellers delivering over there, and that are local.
I know someone (who is trans) from russia and they moved to thailand :P, but yea, migrating out of russia is a good idea.

No point in giving up, but life changes will be necessary
>>
>>109645437
>they moved to thailand
But that's not a developed (first world) country, isn't it? That's where I want to move. I don't think I can do that with software dev, it was possible in the 2010s, but not anymore.
Either way, how did that person move there, i.e. on what visa? How did they get a job?

How would I go about duplicating or extending my main monitor onto my tv? I want to stream some movies for when I have friends or family over. It's not a smart tv.
My pc setup is this: main monitor connected to my gpu via dvi, and secondary monitor (an old drawing tablet with a screen but no pen) connected via a vga to hdmi adapter. Both into my gpu. Could I just grab any old hdmi cable and run it from my gpu to my tv? How much would the load increase for my pc?

Generic "network unreachable" message eh?
You sure the 192.168.10.* is correct AND they are both in the said network?
If that's not your network and you try to connect it, the connection will first go to your default gateway, then to ISP and at some point some router says there's no such thing.

and when I disconnect from the router and reconnect to the roaming ISP again AFTER the stuff I did on the router?

Does anyone happen to know how helium is added to hdds on the assembly line (like a special filling apparatus or are they just closed up in a boxed helium environment) and also generally if the helium is pressurized or just atmospheric? I've been toying with the idea of developing diy methods and tools to refill helium drives since refilling/refurbishment and data recovery is even more retarded expensive with them than normal air drives. Since search engines are no longer allowed to be useful searching for things like this turns up 1.7 trillion results for "why" but as far as I can tell literally 0 "how" or other technical discussion or info.

sudo dnf upgrade

every single day

How come it wants me a windows-like restart when I install updates via the gui? The little blue or red dot every day after boot triggers me and I have no idea if I should reboot or not.
So right now I install via gui and then reboot (in rare cases it doesn't want that, but usually it does).
I also thought about deactivating searching for updates, but what if I miss a CRITICAL security update then? It's all weird. Why am I so retarded?

tl;dr Microsoft was right and blindly upgrading random program files while old versions are still running has unpredictable results. Only online upgrade stuff if you understand what'll happen.
>but what if I miss a CRITICAL security update
You're still missing those because you never restarted the whatever program had the vulnerability.
dnf check-upgrade --advisory-severities=critical --changelogs

Have a systemd timer that mails you reports on this if you want. Discover also highlights these and changes the color of the notification bubble, iirc. For most people the only thing that has them with any frequency is their browser.

Not really a question but be careful anons, if you don't do it regularly, the result might be explosive and therefore hard to control where it flies. Result? Later it's a pain to get cum stains off the speaker's mesh.
Shower gel + brush worked the best for me, water alone wasn't enough and normal soap wasn't great either.

Is there such a thing as programming anxiety? When I was doing my dissertation project and interview assessments, I would be paralysed by all the design decisions i had to make and all the bugs I ought to pre-empt. I think I'm better at hobby projects.
In contrast I'm pretty confident around maths and get stuck in very easily

I guess maybe I should consciously design principles and follow those rather than stir my thoughts in my head

anyone here have experience with x265 encoding?
wondering if there's any benefit to using CRF 12 instead of CRF 18, what documentation I can find claims 18 is "visually lossless" but they also state lower = higher quality
the encoder/vapoursynth package I download called "Hybrid" defaults to CRF 18

more specifically, I have the Chobits blurays which are 1080i, but playing that back in MPC-HC (or any other media player I've tried) gives a 29.97fps video with every 4th frame repeated
90% of the encodes of the show I can find on nyaa/AB are the same, with 29.97fps video and repeat frames. this makes all the slow panning shots look like ass.
there's one encode I found that splits the OP into a separate file and uses mkv linking for playback. I think possibly the OP is 30fps and the rest of the show is 23.976, but haven't confirmed that yet. I find it odd that most encoders would have seemingly have done it wrong.
So anyway, my thinking is I'll just do my own encode to x265 in as high quality as possible, and decimate to 23.976fps, but would appreciate if anyone has more insight
I don't particularly care about filesize, as long as it's not bigger than the source material
I'm testing with the mini-OVA bonus now, and looking at a reduction from 945MB source to ~143MB encode, using CRF 12 and veryslow preset with animation tune
>>
>>109658126
turns out I had it backwards, the OP is 23.976 and all the action/panning shots are 30fps
decimating skips frames in action/fast panning shots and blending just looks like ass in general
testing QTGMC now
>>
>>109658455
did some more testing and apparently Chobits has a whole mess of 30fps segments
found one variable framerate encode but it's a bitstarved 720p with even more bitstarved audio and no signs subtitle track
far as I can tell variable framerate encoding requires supplying a txt file with a list of time/frame stamps specifying which segments are which
guess I'll just watch the 1080i bluray and live with the repeat frames, not like there's a whole lot of motion in the 24fps segments other than the OP anyway

if you're curious, i'm setting up a cheap little smart tv for a friends' campervan. using Bare Launcher instead of the stock home screen that is much faster and gets rid of all the ads/recommendations, Nova for movies/series which seems to be the simplest option for something that has support for artwork/descriptions for more of a media centre feel over something basic like vlc, LocalSend for uploading photos and things from phones directly to the tv without internet access, and Fluffy if i need to move things around.
i originally setup a usb hdd as internal storage, but then it did an os update and forgot the drive, making it completely inaccessible, so i made it external storage instead (just regular unencrypted exfat), i wanted it as internal storage so apps downloaded directly to it, but as external storage i needed a file manager instead to move stuff to the hdd if i send stuff to the tv directly. upside is i can plug the hdd into a computer as well which isn't an option for internal storage
