Reminds me of the realization I had when WoW Classic was released: I didn't actually miss the game, I was nostalgic for the life I had while the game was current. Same can be said about old versions of Windows. This is not to say that I'm one of the many fa/g/s that unironically wishes they were kids again (I'm happily married with kids now), but there is definitely a palpable nostalgia that comes from seeing "old tech" shit.

The same is true for 4chan, mind you. As much as people say "this place has gone to shit", it is hard to tell if that is actually the case or if I just enjoyed it more in my teens and early twenties in the late 2000s because of all of the other reasons that made that time period fun.

Is this Liquid Glass?

it is a shame there was not a desktop toy to give user a comically large hammer to break all that glass.

the question is: vista or 7?
I will post some comparison pics

Vista was so dogshit that an update bricked my OS and I had to learn about bootloaders, linux and drivers. Ended up making a hackintosh and writing up custom kexts for audio and wifi at the age of 15.
Thank you Vista, you were the worst.

plasma 4 never did, and it angers me because it had so much potential to look good, and they abandoned the style before it could have been looking good

microjeet in 2012: throw this beautiful futuristic flashy gui and replace it with mspaint graphics made by suckdeep singh from microsoft india marketing department. also make it tablet first. we are in tablet first world now
>>
Its like everything after 2009 went to shit at Microsoft. They made the worst decisions in almost any regard and still were able to keep market share (At least on the desktop, they lost pretty much all of it in the mobile and server market). it still battles me they are so dominant at the moment with this many terrible products and services.

There was an absolute magic here in like 2010-2012 maybe. Not this board but 4chan generally. It was the wild west, a window into a totally different world that you always knew you belonged to, but never knew existed. The internet is so 4chanized now that it can never have that impact again, plus /b/ and /pol/ were compromised by outside forces. But it was like the craziest thing you ever saw for hours on end every day back then. I never recovered.
>>
>>109606670
The reality is: Fruity Arrow could never work on a mobile phone. The entirety of the remaining Ballmer years was chasing the holy land of stealing the iphone's market with the Zune. So every aspect of the company had to pivot to Zune and being Zune friendly. Regardless if it made any sense or not.

Kind of like now with its push into AI and Indians
>>
>>109606736
Momentum. They are gradually losing in the OS market to androidOS
>>
>>109606670
Windows 2000 was the perfected GUI. XP made some questionable changes but was still mostly ok. And vista was the point they threw it all away and did whatever. Windows 8 was just a continuation of the utter destruction that started with Vista.
>>
>let me just share my dogshit opinion unprompted
why are so many posters like this now?
>>
>>109606850
I remember 2013 felt like a radical shift occurred and a few boards were just unusable, not sure what it was exactly. It felt like the internet collectively went insane
>>
>>109606430
They kind of took their work on Plasma and threw it in the garbage. Nobody really knows why and the KDE team had some kind of scandal going on with some team members that I wasn't enough of a fag to follow at the time. Its' part of what propelled GNOME as being the "Better KDE". A meme that persists to this day.
>>
>>109605277
vista could have been better, but they decided to make the theming darker than windows 7 which i don't like
>>
>>109606784
Maybe I should've clarified OS market share in the server space. They do offer many cloud services, but almost nothing is running windows server anymore. At least compared to the 00s.
>>
>>109605277
I like Vista was more colorful but I feel it also took away from some clarity. I could read the one on the right even if it were 640x480 but the light on dark text on the left is artifacting
>>
>>109606999

except literally all the enterprises
every workplace I ever worked at (in the past 10 years) as well as every 3rd party business we worked with used windows servers everywhere

It is a damn shame that throughout all the years of UI design, they completely dropped the ability to customize your OS themes. That is really something they should have focused on keeping.

I have a soft spot for ME because I had an old computer with it, but I miss when I would just play around with themes for hours. The Electron design of the new windows was the perfect opportunity to bring it back and they didn't.
>>
>>109607008
My experience is very different. At enterprises almost everything has been replaced with Linux based operating systems for quite a while. It was mostly SMB that heavily relied on Windows Server but they mostly moved everything to Microsoft 365 and don't even run their AD locally. Enterprises may have some DC VMs but it's a handful of Windows VMs compared to hundreds or thousands Linux ones. And nothing about the underlying infrastructure is Microsoft anyway. Licensing played a huge part in this. Costs are insane for running anything Microsoft on premise, especially in large environments.
>>
>>109607050
Proper customization might trick us into thinking we actually have any control over our OS.

Anon, they've practically dropped it with XP. Once the Fisher-Price bitmap-based themes became the default, that was that. Even though you had the option to use the classic theme up to Win7, that was merely a leftover.
Though around the same time as XP, people figured out you could hack Windows to accept whatever themes, and it turned out you could do a lot of cool shit with the new bitmap based themes. There are still small communities making these for Windows 11 if you look hard enough.
