Why did AMD FX get so much hate? AMD FX-8350 was pretty great
>>109608806>faildozer
These things had worse performance than 5yo Intel CPUs. When my first-gen i7 mobo broke down, I decided to "upgrade" to an FX-6300, only to find that I suddenly couldn't emulate PS2 and GameCube anymore.
>>109608822they had great general performance but windows 7 forced the entire desktop through the fpu for it's shitty blur mechanic and Microsoft refused to implement a decent scheduler to take advantage of the chip.things like compilers and hpc that knew about the architecture worked great, and thread pinning could basically double your performance in games.the real problem with them was the long pipeline basically killed performance on branchy code and they ran really hot.
>>109609053>forced the entire desktop through the fpu for it's shitty blur mechanicWindows 7 was gorgeous, but more importantly this is false because it was GPU-accelerated.This doesn't answer the question: why did PCSX2 and Dolphin run great on obsolete Intels but choked on the latest and greatest AMD processors at the time?
>>1096088068 cores didn't help much when most code didn't scale beyond 1 core. Working together they were phenom(!)enal, but it was really a workstation CPU, the same way Ryzen is at its core - it just has the single-core go to hide this fact. Then there was the astroturfed bullshit Intcel lusers made up about FPUs, after telling us for years that x87 was irrelevant and [S[S[S[S]]]E was the future while the Athlon-based cores were assraping them in FP performance.
>>109609087there wasn't a question, but whatever: pcsx2 implements a mips instruction decoder in software which is inherently branchy. Intel is really good at branch prediction and always has been because they had the money during the Pentium era to figure it outand while yes, the aero theme was GPU accelerated, that was only for offscreen compositing. the window drawing was still done on CPU including the glare and blur regions.it was always really funny to me that window events actually got throttled to monitor refresh rate. aero on vs aero off drastically affected the file copy dialog
>>109608806Because shilling and LinusTechTips didn't speak about them much due to money, an FX-6300 with a 750Ti or better was actually an amazing budget computer back in the day, I had the big boi 990FX board and an 8350 and I loved it, 125w power consumption isn't even something that's never been done before but people acted as if it was like a 253w CPU like Intel later ended up doing.
>>109608822>I decided to "upgrade" to an FX-6300, only to find that I suddenly couldn't emulate PS2 and GameCube anymoreHorse shit. I could emulate the vast majority of PS2 and GameCube games at full speed on a Phenom II X3 720 back in the day. One of the first things I did when I built that system in 2009 was play through Final Fantasy XII from start to finish via PCSX2. Some really heavy stuff like Xenosaga Episode 1 couldn't quite get there, but even most Wii games on Dolphin were fine.
>>109609514So many people are full of shit about what you can't do on FX it's unreal, I used to play wind waker on my Turion II 45nm 2.3GHz laptop AMD FX CPUs absolutely chew up when it's leveraged, and emulation does leverage it.
>>109609531I think it's just the usual "lie to fit in" NPC crap that Reddi^W4chan has elevated to an art form.
>>109609571It's really incredible how people who never even had an FX CPU have the most to say about it, the only thing FX failed to do is beat Intel in the high end segment like $350 CPUs because the FX-8350 didn't even compete in that space at $200, but price for price FX was better than an Intel CPU, and most gamers in the low to mid range segment playing 1080p games would be fine using the $120 FX-6300 instead of an i3 or i5, the single core performance wasn't that much worse to the point where your games are lagging.
>>109609514>Phenom II X3 720Bullshit, bull fucking shit.>>109609571>>109609626Why are YOU making things up? You can find plenty of contemporary forum posts bitching about these emulators on FX processors:https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-amd-fx6300-is-not-good-enoughhttps://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-how-well-would-an-fx-6300-work-for-dolphinhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPXUkoJmHIYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCl6QaK0vSAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-zz18QP0Wchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn1Mx0qvtJM
>>109608806Every amd cpu I’ve ever used has been shit when compared to Intel.
>>109608806>Why did AMD FX get so much hate? There was a ton of hype for essentially a big downgrade from Phenom 2.Piledriver fixed some stuff but still wasn't a good upgrade while intel was pulling ahead.
>>109609713Intel is about to release a set of chips that’s going to btfo everyone else. Watch.
>>109609626Hell, I didn't even have an FX: I had an even crummier A10-6600. Sure, it was a Richlands - so a bit better... well, everything - but it only four cores. Frankly, I didn't miss those cores. Back then, as I mentioned above, very little took advantage of multicore back then. But yeah, all the kids knocking FX were in elementary school, and by their own admission, were using Sandy Bridges and the like at the time. Further, they would have been running them at stock speeds - dad would have flogged their asses raw if he came home to find they'd overclocked them to 5.5GHz - so their claims of "hurrdurr soooooo much faster" is completely born of turbo-nutter overclocks that they only did once the machine was worthless and it didn't matter if they blew it up - but by then, we had Ryzens.
>>109609514>I could emulate the vast majority of PS2 and GameCube games at full speed on a Phenom II X3 720 back in the dayLol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_CMx5uhhT8Meanwhile on Intel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLsC1Bch_rU
The problem with it is that clock for clock it was slower in performance than an Intel build from 2008
Shitty bait. Even AMD fanboys (myself included) admit these things were kinda shit. They overclocked well, which was fun. But even with a ridiculous overclock Intel's processors at the time were just better.
>>109608806I was always under the impression that the performance-to-price ratio was good, rather than overall performance. Maybe that was only true for certain Phenoms before them and I'm misremembering.
>old rig has a Piledriver in it>replace it>next power bill is 40 dollars less than the one before it
>>109610744The price to performance was amazing, you weren't gonna get a $120 CPU brand new that did better than an FX-6300, everybody loves to compare expensive ass high end chips to the mid range priced FX-8350, but if you compare a $120 FX-6300 to a similar priced i3 where a lot of budget builders are looking, things start to become retarded.
>>109608806As someone who owned one I'll sum it up like this:You get power of an i3 with a power draw of an i7.It was fucking awful.
>>109608806>AMD FX-8350Heated homes like nobody's business
I still use a fx8300I think the main problem is that the bios had retarded defaults, like if you raise HT and some other parameter to what amd says to OC you get way better performance for basically no cost. but people tried to intel way to overclock, or didnt do shit.iirc you also benefit a ton from memory speed
I had an FX8350 many years. It's single thread performance was appalling in some applications. It underperformed my previous Phenom II which were chips launched in 2008.When it did perform ok it never beat any of the Sandy Bridges available at the time. AMD kept selling this shit until 2017, and by then, those chips were a total joke.I upgraded to a 9900k, the jump was huge. I could do things like emulation, Stalker, and many games 2009+ finally without lots of frametime issues.
>>109609087Because pcsx 2 was coded with Intel opcode in mind and they didn't care to port it to AMD?
>>109612052Dolphin runs just fine on modern AMD processors because AMD processors are finally fast
>>109608806I had a phenom II x4 955. Upgrading to fx was either go back in performance, barely tie, or have slighty better performance with a ridicolous tdp. Performance PER dollars gain d It was better ton just go to haswell or whatever. Faildozer indeed. So much they wanted the fx moniker to try to give the idea they werent a waste of sand.
>>109608806Bulldozer was shit, pile driver was OK. Problem was its about 50% more power consumption than sandy bridge and 4x worse than ivy bridge, its contemporary. The architecture has held up well once people learned how to use threads. If Intel made it on their process and you had 8 cores at 95 watts people would have been blown away.
>>109608806They were awesome imo. The first AMD chips I took seriously. AMD came out and said "here's a chip 80% as good as Intels for half the price" and it certainly upset some people.
>>109608806I had way more AMD GPU issues back then than CPU issues
>>109615144>and it certainly upset some peopleKek people will always make excuses to defend Intelsrael, they went real hard during FX because it was getting firmly beaten by intel (for much ore money) but even after Ryzen came out and AMD was competitive and then eventually smacking Intel around during Zen3, the shilling really became obvious, you had the user benchmark shenanigans,it was an interesting time for CPUs in the late 2010s, it's that classic Moore's law is dead moment in 2019 where you're like "holy shit"
>>109608806it was assthe only reason people bring it up is because it was the only one comparable to anything intel back thenpretty crazy how now things are reversed
>>109615219>the only reason people bring it up is because it was the only one comparable to anything intel back thenI would actually argue against the "great value" of the FX-8350 even as a user of one back in the day, simply because you needed a motherboard with at least a 6+2 phase power setup in order to run an 8350 without throttling, which means you couldn't use a dirt cheap motherboard, looking back it it I personally wished I had gotten the FX-6300 with a good mid range card, and then just went to ryzen with a newer mid range card, and then newer and newer and newer instead of sticking with my 990FX 8350 setup for 9 years ringing it out lel, but truly the FX-6300 was the value king for $120, nothing you could buy new from ivy bridge could touch it for that kind of money, and you could get a cheap 970 board, maybe even cheaper 780G motherboard and it would run without throttling and be a good experience.
I had an fx8150 and it was fucking garbage
I miss my fx 8320. first cpu in my first pc, 10 years ago.
>>109608806Sometimes I want to strangle all the subhuman underage amdrones. Shitdozer was so bad that all subhuman older amdrones went silent until zen 1 which also sucked but less so and they finally could pretend it's the greatest thing ever all over the internet.Amdrones are the pajeets of tech forums. Filthy, loud, obnoxious and incompetent.
>>109609694>>109609781you're cherry picking the heaviest games to emulate for the respective consoles
>>109615714I built my 8350 in late 2013 when I was 18 Anon, I was where, the CPU was fine, it was i7-3770 multicore performance for i5-3470 money, performed on the single core about as well as an i3-3210, that's just what it was.
>>109615144Except it was way worse and more expensive then a used 2500k

>>109615826and a used honda is cheaper than a new toyota what's your point dumbass
>>109608806They were worse than the phenom 2's before it and they basically gave up fixing it until ryzen. Intel hopped on the bandwagon to farm free cash reselling the same shit with minimal improvements so technology was stuck in 2012 for 5 years
>>109615806How is it an unfair comparison when those games ran fine on Core 2 Duos?
>>109615951Subhumans like you should be grinded into paste and used as compost. The mental gymnastics and outright lies I've seen amdrones use would make even a jew blush.
>>109615991*should be ground into paste
>>109609457The FX-9590 could reach 220W, then again nobody really bought the thing because its power draw could kill the motherboard it's in.
>>109608806No, it was shit.It was so shit it allowed Intel to re-release the same shitty quad cores with minimal IPC improvements for like 5 generations. Everyone who had anything good to say about FX were people coping and hoping AMD would one day return.Still surprising that that actually happened.
>>109617113Kek I wish AMD hadn't even bothered with that stupid ass 220w shit, leave the need for exotic cooling for the OC niggas and go hard in the price to performance that you know how to actually deliver on, not the high end where you can't compete.>>109617125It happened because we gave them our energy
>>109608806Because of the way the "cores" were built, all the performance improvements were in integer operations, while floating point performance sucked. And unfortunately very very few heavier applications are integer only, so it was mostly only fast in either benchmarks or shit that didn't need performance anyways. To make matters worse, Intel struck gold with their chips around the same time with the Sandy Bridge lineup that had excellent performance and low power usage. The one advantage of AMD FX as a plaform was heat density. While they consumed power like an Intel HEDT, they were also very easy to cool despite of it. But once again there's only very specific and few scenarios where that matters.
>>109617159>The one advantage of AMD FX as a plaform was heat densityThat was my favorite part about them that a lot of Intel consoomer socket people didn't understand, the FX CPUs were like the size of a goddamn LGA 1366 CPU, that's why 125w doesn't mean shit, it was quite easy to get the heat off the CPU, it was actually more important that your VRM be able to cool itself from the draw, it was very common with people paring the 8350 with the cheapest fucking board ever to get stuttering in games and a 1.4GHz throttling chip even though the CPU is just sitting there chilling, and it gave FX a bad name, I always say that AMD shoul've never allowed 125W CPUs on anything that wasn't a 990FX, because at the very minimum a 990FX board is specced for a 6+2 power phase, meanwhile 970 and lower boards can be 4+1 phase, and MSI was stupid enough to make a 3 phase 970 Krait mobo that didn't work with an 8 core stock.
>>109608806I used this until recently and it was fine. Upgraded to something more modern for 3d work. Otherwise i'd still be using it. All the crying these retards are doing is pointless. For 99% of shit it was fine. But then most of the retards in here are purely cracked out on gayming. So yeah just use your ubermench gaming rig bullshit with the LED's everywhere and the billion gig GPU for 900fps and raytracing and all that other bullshit. Enjoy the fake threads.I forgot I also have at least 3 other FX series chips. They're pretty neat.
