I think I need a smaller phone, I have small hands and want to prioritize ease of one-handed use. However I am also poorfag. Shortlist:
>Pixel 9a
>Pixel 10a
>Moto Edge 60 Neo (which look like Moto's Pixel 'a' copy)

Is it retarded to get a Pixel 9a now? It was released 1 year 4 months ago. Obviously some may have been produced later, but it is possible that if I buy one it has been sitting untouched for over a year, possibly even 1.5 years. Would that have a negative long term impact on the battery health? Smarter to eat the higher initial cost and get the 10a instead?
And what about the Edge 60 Neo, anyone have any experience with that?

I would always pay more to have access to GrapheneOS.

"Flagship" performance has been completely irrelevant at the start of this decade since mid-range and budget devices are all performant enough for Android and all the apps you'd ever need.
This >>109620739 >>109620760 difference quite literally only matters to phone gamers and people doing local AI stuff on their phone, both of which is largely irrelevant. The overwhelming majority of people only use their phones for communication, YouTube and web browsing.

Alright. I just bought a motorola edge 2024 since my moto g7 power took a shit on me. I am going to use it stock android until the warranty goes out and the phone loses official support. I need some suggestions for de-googling. Don't plan to root it. I'm open to using ADB for debloating. Trying to decide what apps I want (OSS) to replace stock apps.

How are these? Also, is F-Droid security fucked, or is this article FUD?
https://privsec.dev/posts/android/f-droid-security-issues/
I am honestly wary of this article because it recommends sticking to the Play Store although there has been genuine malware on it that has received millions of downloads.
Seems like GrapheneOS devs recommend against it, too, but I am pretty wary of them, as well. I see Obtanium recommended as an alternative, but it looks more like an updater rather than a full app store. I want an app store. There is also Accrescent, but it looks like it's in alpha, and I can't even see what's available on it. I've read the archives, and some posters mention that the selection is limited.
Any ideas?

Everything you need to get an ad-free YouTube Music experience on iOS without paying for a subscription, you can sideload custom modified IPA files like YTLitePlus or YouTubeiVanced using tools like Sideloadly, AltStore, or SideStore. With Google locking down, it's crazy to think in 2027 iOS will be able to install files without a pc and android will need a 24 hour wait than a pc adb file load.

Stock will have Google Play Services, which has root level access and is the primary source of Google's telemetry. Unless you get rid of play services you can run as many "non-Google" apps you want and it won't make any real difference.
>>
>>109624064
Good to know. I still want to think about the apps I will eventually use when I do switch the thing to LineageOS and transition to using them beforehand.
Anyone have any non-clanker wisdom?
>>
>>109624134
I had Graphene for a while, your original set-up would keep you extremely private because Graphene is completely Google free (unless you install Play Services) - although installing Play Services on Graphene (and I assume Lineage too) is very different than what's on stock. On Graphene (and, again, I assume Lineage too), Play Services is sandboxed and treated like a regular app, which means it doesn't have the root access if does on stock.
Graphene is solid, the schizo that used to run it stepped down a few/couple of years ago. Lineage is a good choice too, although I've never used it, so I can't offer any guidance or an opinion on it.
>>

>>
>>109623287
I would think so. Seen a lot of people with broken screens roaming around, I imagine if they had one it would have taken the hit for them. That said if you're careful enough with your phone it shouldn't even be a problem. Still using my note 10 plus and I have no damage on it whatsoever, no screen protector, but always keep it in a simple case. Dropped it maybe a handful of times.
>>
>>109620476
I got one, but am still in the process of figuring it out/getting files from my old phone transferred because transferring folders and shit between android devices is hell, at least to me. Maybe I'm missing a program that would make it easier to transfer settings and shit.

I'm also trying to figure out if I want to root it and put another OS on it, but I don't want to lose access to Google play shit (even though I only really play Master Duel) and banking. I'll get back to you on my adventures in that.

Isn't file transfer from another Android/Apple device cooked into the firmware? It's usually one of the first options on running the phone setup after a fresh install, asking you to connect your new phone to your old one with the a USB-C cable.

Agreed and that is why I mentioned the launchers originally but it's still an OS with telemetry. The Microg implementation is good and it's OK to use but the OS still wants you to set up a Murena account. GrapheneOS is the best option for the foil hat brigade as per the Trinity College results..

>is F-Droid security fucked
F-Droid doesn't provide you with the official builds of apks in most cases, at least in their own default repo. I would suggest directly sourcing your apps from developers (or Play Store).
>it recommends sticking to the Play Store
Yes, that's because the Play Store gives you apps directly built by developers, which you can verify with app signatures. F-Droid on the other hand builds apps themselves (in their own repo). This is why when you install an app on F-Droid you can't update it on Play Store, but when you "side-load" the apk file from within your web browser you can still update it in Play Store, as the apk signatures match.
Basically, having your app built by someone other than the original source is always risky.
>Obtanium recommended as an alternative
It is much better, yes.
>it looks more like an updater rather than a full app store
It's both. You can use it as an "app store", but you have to manually opt into each individual app, or a batch of apps. It's similar to how F-Droid repositories work.
>Youtube: Newpipe
Use GrayJay. It's significantly faster when it comes to unfucking itself after YouTube does an update which bricks 3rd party video players. It also supports more platforms than just YouTube, if you're ever in the need for those.

I ordered a Pixel 10 Pro to replace my OnePlus 11 now that OnePlus has decided to leave my market. I feel uneasy buying a OnePlus 15 and I used the early Samsung Notes but the stock software was dreadful. Recent Samsung seem to still have that OneUI smell and iOS just sucks for smartphones (I like it for iPads though). So I feel like Google is my only option. Is anyone here enjoying their Pixel 10? I've heard battery problems but it sounds like it's people dealing with the battery optimization when you update Android.
>>

the problem with pixel is their performance is shit. one plus was the only one making a near stock android with flagship performance that can rival Samsung. it’s literally over for android. otherwise if you don’t give a shit about that pixel is fine, I think they’re the most beautifully designed phones on the US market

There's very little difference between the two, but going for a 10a will guarantee a more recent battery and you'll have longer software updates. But it sounds like this doesn't matter to you, in which case just get the Pixel 8. Although keep in mind that even at 100% battery health it apparently has a 30% worse day-to-day battery life compared to Pixel 10a.
>>
Just ordered a 512gb S26 Ultra. 90 Bongbucks a month for a year to get it interest free. I see smartphones as a boring necessity and I'm not particularly excited by them, but this is the first time I've been able to get a flagship model and I'm hoping it's going to last me a long time since I usually run phones into the ground anyway, and those have all been pre-owned or old as fuck.

Did I make the right choice or is it going to explode in my pocket and cripple me? Or is that feature exclusive to the Jeet market?

Pick one. The 10 series has low/mid-range specs with high prices for what you get. A $200 chinkphone will likely have better specs than the $549 or whatever you pay for a 10 VII much less the new VIII. Only reason to overpay for a Sony is your love of antique features like xboxhueg bezels, SD Card slow storage, and a weak headphone jack.

This. The ship has sailed on privacy and it's all just for marketing purposes anyway, who gives a fuck? Like some GCHQ glowbong cares that I'm jerking it to /gif/ or watching old WCW clips on youtube in my spare time. If the bobbies really wanted to fit me up with something they'd just drop a load of CP on my laptop when they seized it for spurious reasons anyway. Spying on my phone makes zero difference to my actual life outside of ideological reasons, and the time for doing anything about that was back when people would call you a schizo for suggesting it was even possible.

Here in the US people just stick to their carrier and rarely, if ever shop around. Personally I've always bought unlocked so I usually take advantage of free trials and the deals that come with them. Currently paying about $12 a month for 3 months of US Mobile's unlimited starter plan, after which it'll go up to its regular $25. Before I had a special deal with Google Fi paying $38 a month for 18 months, and before that I was on T-Mobile paying $50 a month.

if you care about bootloader unlocking and/or want custom roms, then maybe a oneplus 15. will last you those 8 years. battery is huge, soc is a beast.
if you're not planning to or don't care about bootloader unlock then maybe an iphone or a pixel. shitty for mobile gaming, but has much more years of updates. you could also get the op15 but it has like 4 or 5 years of software updates.

>>109628850
>I am pretty against it because I do not have a jewgle account
You don't need an account. Aurora Store uses a universal Google account for all users. APKPure bypasses Google's servers entirely.
>will not provide my phone number to make one
You don't need to. This is only needed if you're making the account outside of the Play Store app. The phone number is optional for all Android users.
>>
>>109628199
Privacy is a meme. You think running an iPhone or Graphene or Lineage makes a single ounce of difference? Lol no. No it doesn't.
What you need to be worried about is malware, which apple is very good at mitigating. Certain android phones are too if you're not a retard.
>>
>>109628991
Ah, I was aware of Aurora. I use it, but I use it very sparingly. Aurora seems good, but I am not sure if there are any risks I am unaware of. I think I'd prefer Aurora to something like APKPure.
>You don't need to. This is only needed if you're making the account outside of the Play Store app. The phone number is optional for all Android users.

>>
>>109629061
This.
>>
>>109629102
>Is that so?
Yes, at least in most places. Normally you should be able to do a factory reset on a phone and immediately set up a new Google account by going into the Play Store. You will be prompted for a phone number, but it should be optional. I've set up a couple accounts just last month.
>>
>>109629061
privacy isn't a meme and custom roms are better than ios for privacy. malware isn't really something to worry about these days, even clueless boomers have been using android phones for years.

One video where the Indian Tik Tok man KNEW the line would appear with the heat of an update?

You cannot get a software update that causes a green line. It is ALWAYS the result of damage to a) the display itself, or b) the ribbon cable connecting the display.

>>109631519
What software did S26U launch with? Durr...oh yeah, OneUI 8.5! So how could an update that was preloaded on the phone cause it to magically get a green line?

Now think for a second, I know this is difficult. But why would Samsung make their brand new phones have a green line? What purpose does that serve? I could see a planned obsolescence scenario where you want to ruin the phones that are over a couple years old, but to punish the people who bought your new shiny flagship? It makes no sense.

Now, guess who makes screens for Apple? Mostly Samsung, LG, and BOE. You think these screens are magically immune to the same types of issues that all OLED displays can suffer from? Many examples of iPhones with green or purple lines, many start on fire ("explode") because of Lithium Ion battery failures, JUST. LIKE. EVERY. OTHER. PHONE.

So please stop crap flooding the thread with anti-Samsung trolling and flamebait, it just makes you look pathetic. Your behavior not resulting in extended bans is really quite strange.

I want to love Xperia phones but I hate them. For a start, you're pretty much stuck with Sony as your only option if you want a headphone jack and an OLED display in a new phone, due to current market being totally enshittified.
Xperia 1 is literally perfect, but it costs 1500$, and there's no way any sane person pays that much for a phone.
Xperia 5 was great and less expensive - but it's fucking dead. Thanks, Sony.
Xperia 10 is a joke. $500-600 and the specs of a $150-200 chinkphone, which looks less and less justifiable with each new year. Nearly zero progress, every new model has almost the same specs as the last one. Upcoming 10 VIII is literally identical to 10 VII. Even my cheap Motorola G84 from 2023 has more storage/RAM, and a similar SoC.
I guess I may have to give up on Sony (and on my hope to keep the headphone jack), and just get Pixel 10a/11a or a Motorola Edge 70/Fusion, as well as some stupid dongles.
>>
>buy pixel 11 directly from google

>>
>>109631751
Removal of the jack makes the phone objectively worse and less usable, while bringing zero benefits.
I don't want to think about having to charge my headphones, ever. I don't want to be interrupted by that. Sometimes I leave something playing while falling asleep, which will drain any wireless headphones to zero by the morning (and eventually start having a permanent effect on their tiny batteries).
I also want to be able to charge the phone and use headphones at the same time, so "just use a dongle" is not a good solution either, unless you have one of those dongles with USB passthrough, which aren't very common, and sometimes don't even work.
Nothing was stopping you from using your wireless headphones with a phone that has a jack. But everyone who has reasons to use wired headphones is now screwed because of this "i don't use it - therefore it's not needed anymore" mentality.
>>

Any phone mogs apple unless it's pixel. But apple gets away with it because they made themselves a cult based following. They don't have to compete with others. Meanwhile chinaphones look like other chinaphones so they have 100 of different Chinese brands to compete with and they have to push forward lot

Going forward will the only viable OS option for phones be GrapheneOS? Android will be locked down and I refuse to switch to fagple

There's always the 1% chance UBPorts will become a viable phone OS.
There's always the 5% chance an un-cucked Android fork will be made.
There's always the 50% chance HarmonyOS will go global.

Has anyone used the Pixel Buds Pro 2, preferably with multiple devices like connecting them to a PC? I have a Pixel 10 Pro Fold and overall its pretty great (still need to flash a custom ROM though) but it appears that there isn't a new Pixel Buds Pro 3 to go along with the Pixel 11 series, so I've thought about picking up some of the Pro 2. Many of the reviews seem pretty positive, but a lot of it has to do with using specific features (ie translation or Gemini stuff) when right now I'm just more concerned first about good wireless audio quality, microphone quality, and ability to use them on multiple devices - which some said in the past before the updates the last one was more difficult like getting multiple microphone/headphone listings in WIndows/Linux instead of the array in total etc. Anyone tried them overall?

My Pixel 7 got wet and the screen is fucked, replacing it doesn't make much sense for the cost.

What phone should I get instead if I want clean software and a bright screen? The Pixel 10/10a look decent but why the fuck is the main camera sensor half the size?

Was considering the Nothing (3a) Pro or (4a) Pro as well.

Motorolas look interesting as well but from what I've heard they just keep getting buggier with software updates.

I'm in the EU looking for something midrange like 400-600e.

Pixel 9a if you can still get one as they're on sale in most territories but they're showing out of stock. It's got the same SOC and a better camera than the 10a. If you're looking at Motorola for GrapheneOS, it'll only be available on new flagships in 2027 with Qualcomm SOCs. I don't know that much about the Nothing brand but they look decent and ran by Carl Pei who co-founded OnePlus. I might buy one in a year or two as the scene support is good.

I've ordered a Pixel 11 Pro. The £520 trade-in for the Pixel 7 Pro was too good to refuse in the current scorching hot climate. I'll let you know how things are going later in the week.
>>
>>109636746
Hope it's OK anon. The software is supposed to be good but I'm not sold on the hardware. Coming out with statements that the Tensor 6 is optimised for the software whilst in runs two gens behind other SOCs on the benchmarks just sounds like the bullshit Apple used to say about the Bionic chip before they got their act together. Thing is, this is the 6 iteration of the Google chip and for a 2nm SOC, it's pretty shitty.

It should be a fine phone after the GPU driver stuff gets sorted out. Kinda dumb they went with that particular GPU but there's probably a reason. That trade in is ridiculous though, £520 for a 7 Pro?

I go on the Google Store, enter in my Pixel 10 Pro as trade bait, and they offer me $550CAD, which is less than £300. Canada usually has shit trade in offers so I'm not surprised just disappointed.

A lovely phone mate but unfortunately your only option is a generic Bluetooth case Amazon flog for around £30. Nothing that will actually fit your phone that I can find. My only other suggestion would be to visit a tiki owned mobile phone shop that you usually find in town centres (ours is near a bus station). These Pakis hoard shit loads of old tech and stock and chances are they may have the case/keyboard you're looking for.
>>
>>109637346
You know, I am genuinely going to miss OnePlus. I've switched between them, Sony and Samsung for so long, now that they've left the market, I can't recommend them as even if you bought the Chinese or Indian variant, it's going to be locked down with no global ROM to fall back on. And avoid Oppo; they may be the same hardware as 1+ but their firmware is bloated shite and if you're bothered, their bootloaders are locked. Yes, I could debloat using ADB but, just like Samsung who've locked the bootloader since OneUI 8.5, I won't be buying their phones in the future.
>>
>>109637561
"Less is more". You can hear the Samsung spin department now and the thing is, they're partly responsible for the current component cost crisis that's caused them to reduce memory/hardware components to reduce BOM costs whilst adding a $100 to their unit price.
>>
>>109637705
I've always liked the idea of owning a Sony phone, but they were always fairly expensive, and their competition dropped prices way faster making them even worse deals.

I'm leaning towards getting the Vivo V70, since I'm seeing good deals at like 350-400e locally. not the clean software I was hoping for but doesn't look as bad as xiaomi phones.
>>
>>109637760
>You get less cameras because of the ram crisis
>>
>>109637785
You get less camera and a reduction in quality components because the company is trying to reduce costs any way they can because of the overinflated costs of RAM. In the upcoming releases, I doubt you'll get a SIM card ejector tool, let alone a USB-C cable packaged with the phone. One thing I do know is that there are going to be a lot more failures in field caused by this penny pinching.
>>
>>109637785
Vivo looks on par for specs and price with the Nothing (4a) but the V70 has a bigger battery and faster charging. Looks like a good choice anon. You can always debloat using ADB or UAD. https://xdaforums.com/t/2022-07-03-v0-5-1-universal-android-debloater.4069209/
Can't see a safe debloat list for the V70 yet.

I have a s23 (base model) on 8.5, no issues with display, I don't see how software can cause physical damage without some underlying hardware issue
>>
>>109639488
>they post feelings and I post facts
reading comprehension is important and just because you feel a certain way, its not gonna alter reality. people’s devices with no damage were getting green lines, catching fire and exploding too. you can cope as much as you want. it will not change the facts. >>109639488
>>
>>109639509
>gets to be a retard twice in a row
my phone working perfectly fine isn't a feeling. Software doesn't cause physical damage without some preexisting hardware issue no matter how much you cry about it, I'm not even defending samsung as it's entirely possible something about the way the phone is designed makes it more prone to certain issues, but without failure rate it's hard to gauge how pervasive these issues are and I have fixed enough phones and consoles to not take people at face value when they say they have "no idea" how their device got damaged. Now this is specifically about about shit like greenlines, safety hazards like exploding batteries show they don't have enough safety measures for something that people keep in close proximity the majority of the day and barring physical tampering from users needs to be taken very seriously

I don't find the trade-off better making your already large phone even bulkier and the meagre extra protection that they offer, phones are significantly more durable these days, and superficial damage like scuffs is just superficial, which is hardly a problem unless you're super worried about resale value
The better solution imo is to commit to owning a phone for more than a few years and to repair it if it's badly damaged
