this has basically nothing to do with github

If you delete everything it will delete everything.
If you don't have backups, that's your problem.

PEBCAK again. Go figure.

Serious question. I'm developing a commercial video game full time (I quit my job to work on it) and I haven't set up any sort of version control, I just back things up on an external drive. I know how to use git, I just haven't set it up because I'm a solo dev and also I don't like the idea of putting my valuable files on someone else's computer (github). Am I retarded? I just feel like whoever runs github is going to push some slopcode to production and some hacker is going to steal everything on there at some point.
>>
>>109619601
probably because vscode has been vibecoded for a while now

yes

you can run git locally
you dont have to add a remote repository at github or gitlab ever
>>
>>109619601
>know enough about tech to get to github
>dont actually use git (…?)
>no backups either
people are strange
>>109619710
you are retarded and should not be allowed to use a computer that isnt a smartphone
not having source code in git or fossil is retarded. not having versioning for your assets is also retarded. maybe you should figure out the very basics before you waste a year on a pipedream
>>
>>109619601

>don't commit anything for 3 months
>press discard all changes
>"Are you sure you want to discard ALL changes in N files? This is IRREVERSIBLE! The current working set will be FOREVER LOST if you proceed."
>Click Discard All Files.
>Lose all changes.
>Somehow it's VSCode's fault.
>>
>>109619710
Other people have correctly answered that you are retarded but I would like to add that if github genuinely ends up leaking private repositories, it's global catastrophe for everyone and your timmy video game will be a drop in the ocean compared to the immediately following flood of AWS/cloud hacks, extorted intellectual property, FAGMAN tears, and government system leaks/shutdowns. I figure it would be pandemonium.

You should be worried about your personal opsec, which if it is good will not be the issue. Don't have shit passwords, don't get social engineered, and you can use online services without being paranoid.
>>
>>109619601
recycle bin not a backup
dude looked in a wrong place for a backup
>>
>>109619779
I do have version control though. I keep an "old" folder and a "new" folder. When I copy over to the drive, I delete the old folder, rename new to old, and put the files in a new new folder.

>>
>>109619883
This. My first tech job as in a small company where our CEO had a similar mindset. We couldn't use cloud services like GitHub because someone might "steal our code", host on AWS because someone might "hack our servers", or even use front-end libraries like React because a client might choose someone else to work on the project later on (we had our own buggy front-end library, which was the worst thing I've ever used). Designers wouldn't get licenses for Illustrator or Photoshop because Inkscape and "GIMP" were "just as good or even better" and it's a conspiracy created by Adobe that their product are better. I wish I was making this up. Now that I think about it, it's just so bizarre.

The button says it's a permanent irrevocable action that Github and thus Microsoft are legally bound to abiding to. They literally make you manually type it a specific way before allowing you to complete the action. Microsoft is respecting your rights (I would hope)
>>
>>109619710
I could understand it if you were some PLC nerd with a library of unchanging decades-old scripts, but not using version control for video games is retarded. Creative works need version control the most because you end up changing things back and forth while experimenting.

The issue here was not understanding how Git works. When you press discard all button on the source control panel, it's the same as running `git restore .`.
>>
>>109620023
Thank you. I can't believe this guy acts like Rockstar Games or Activison Blizzard don't use version control systems (VCs, not to be confused with Voice Calls, or Verifiable Credentials or Venture Capitalist Funding, because apparently some people don't have enough memory to juggle these various things in their head)

Version control doesn't have to be for collaboration, it also allows you the ability to experiment. Ie you might start implementing something, then realize the way you're doing it is retarded, with a VCS you can just roll back. Or, you can work on multiple things in parallel, very important to be able to do if you want to be able to keep your brain happy

HOW THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT POSSIBLE, WHO THE HELL IS THE DUMBFUCK WHO MADE THE OPTION TO PERMANENTLY DELETE ALL THE FILES ON A DRIVE BY ACCIDENT EVEN POSSIBLE?? CANNOT EVEN FIND THEM IN THE RECYCLE BIN!!!! I DIDN'T EVEN THOUGHT THAT WAS POSSIBLE ON UNIX!!!

The button that explicitly tells you it'll delete everything? You clicked the button that explicitly tells you it'll delete everything and it deleted everything?

>>109621065
does it really tho'? in every context? i don't use that dogshit IDE. i remember pulling a folder into an IDE many years ago, then i didn't want it there anymore, i right clicked, "remove", and with no warning or confirmation it just removed that folder from the drive. very cool. shit UI
>>
>>109621110
Yes, it says >>109619823

This is why you use cli instead of these dogshit "user-friendly" gui layers. With cli you can revert everything and still un-revert if you decide you want your local changes back after all, by finding the ref in the ref log.

I think they've added that DELETE PERMANENTLY in caps on that message explicitly because of tards like op
notice how the post is from ALMOST A DECADE AGO too
it's funny how hipsters as a subculture went away decades ago too but some people obviously still need to feel superior about the niche product they consume

I think the only thing I am missing from github is something like dependabot which can make merge requests to upgrade critical security stuff for packages in your repo, other than that I am very satisfied with gitlab

I wouldn't bother with git if you're working on a game and your team isn't big.
SVN + TortoiseSVN is good if you're on Windows.
