HDD's are terrible cost per gigabyte if you only put like 1TB on them. Where as discs movies or TV shows or games you burn you only use the storage you need for your collection through discs. Zero power, Zero storage cost, Zero electric cost, Zero drive replacement cost. Most blurays and DVDs if taken care of will last 70+ years.

LD can also withstand small amounts of damage better than DVD or a digital file. With LD (or VHS) and a modern signal chain, any damage to the disc can be reconstructed or at least be made invisible by looking at the nearest unaffected neighboring line and blending. With DVD the picture will freak out until the next key frame or, in some cases, the timing information is gone and the thing will skip until the player (be it a program running a file, or a player with a disc in it) can find the next non-garbled bit and track. It's complicated.
