>Under a new European Union law starting February 18, 2027, all portable batteries in consumer electronics—including smartphones—must be "readily removable and replaceable" by users using basic, common tools without special heating or glue.
So why haven't smartphone companies announced any new phones with removable batteries yet /g/?
>>
>>109625452
because there's a loophole where if the device needs to be waterproof then it's okay not to have replaceable battery or some shit like that iirc. Just a typical EU moral grandstanding and regulation bureaucracy to kneecap their own tech industry, while leaders can pat themselves on the back while sipping wine

Apple is still looking for a way to circumvent that.
evil fucking faggots
>>
>>109625467
Is it possible for a phone with a removable battery to be waterproof?
>>
>>109625497
Depends. You also have to consider all those overengineered foldable phones which need a very tight packing of everything especially when making it waterproof
>>
>>109625497
Just use screws to hold the backplate just like every waterproof digital watch does.

Samsung literally makes and sells a rugged phone that is both dust and waterproof and with removable battery: https://youtu.be/Rm9rTYB7CdQ?
The only problem is that It has shit specs, but the tech already exists.
>>
>>109625452
Because they found loopholes or paid politicians off to make loopholes

I’m honestly surprised the EU was successful in making apple use usb c. They were so butthurt about that they cucked it to usb 2.0 speeds for no reason
>>
>>109625497
Yes, but why would they do that when they have a convenient way to ignore the law and continue doing what they already are?
>>
>>109625567
>The only problem is that It has shit specs, but the tech already exists.
Yes but the thing is I don't want to have a phone with shit specs
>>
>>109625578
They themselves would also like to have somewhat replaceable battery as it's one of the components they have to repair themselves if issues happen. It's usually glued tho and requires IPA to remove it (and the watertight seal)
>>
>>109625586
They did It on purpose so the only people who'll buy It would be construction companies and not the general public.
>>
>>109625497
Galaxy S5 was waterproof with removable backplate.
It was always possible, which makes it all the more infuriating that they switched to glued-on backplates under the cover of waterproofing.
>>
>>109625573
cause they were gonna do it anyways. It's prob much sooner than they wanted to milk lightning as much as possible but they transitioned macs to thunderbolt/usbc port way before eu said anything
>>
>>109625586
As >>109625616 said, the buyers of phones like this are corporations to distribute to supervisors in construction, mining, forestry, oil and gas, etc. So they put them together with the cheapest shit that will still work as a phone/email machine and add a huge markup.

Casio and other quartz watches have been waterproof and with removable batteries for decades. All you need are rubber gaskets.
>>
>>109625628
it was all done in the name of design TM (officially) and anti-consumer practices (inofficially)

>>109625452
you vill have removable batteries
>>
>>109625497
They could do it 12 years ago.
>>
>>109625452
You skipped the most important part
>To avoid the replacement requirement the battery must retain at least 80% of its original capacity after 1,000 charge cycles
All new phones now advertise as capable of meeting this criteria
>>
>>109625452
>exempt on warerproof devices
its a nothingburger
>>
>>109625497
Galaxy S5 was like that so yes.
>>
>>109625777
80% after 3 years is nothing. My Samsung S10e still has 97% and that is a 6 years old phone.
>>
>>109625578
Nintendo already announced a new switch 2 model with a replaceable battery. It will be sold in the EU only. Take a guess why.
>>
>>109625777
What's the fucking point of this law then?
>>
>>109625769
>>109625628
this is where smartphones peaked: Removable battery, microSD card slot, 3.5 mm headphone jack, IR blaster, dedicated heart-rate sensor, physical Home button, capacitive Back button, capacitive Recent Apps button, RGB notification LED, removable rear cover, micro-USB 3.0 port, MHL wired HDMI output, IP67 water-proof
I got it second-hand for 250€.
>>
>>109625809
And a plastic back. I hate they wrap phones in glass and metal now.
>>
>>109625467
That sounds like some bullshit loophole forced by "lobbyists"
>>
>>109625777
1000 cycles is standard for li-ion batteries, then they get exponentially worse and die soon after
>>
>>109625798
Most manufacturers wont be able to prove that. And even then, manufacturers will have to provide replacement batteries and instructions on how to do it
>>
>>109625467
>>109625779
> that are specifically designed to be used, for the majority of the active service of the appliance, in an environment that is regularly subject to splashing water, water streams or water immersion and that are intended to be washable or rinseable. This derogation should only apply when it is not possible, by way of redesign of the appliance, to ensure the safety of the end-user and the safe continued use of the appliance after the end-user has correctly followed the instructions to remove and replace the battery.
Devices that will only be accidentally immersed are not exempt and if it is possible to redesign the device to allow the end user to replace the battery, then that is also required.

Well, you don't want to cripple the economy now do you?

great. Carrying 3 slim batteries is much better than carryng a power bank. If the battery is mere 3000 phone will be light too. So i guess my next hpone will be apple's when their profit maximisation is curbed
>>
>>109625825
You can blame those "tech" influencers such as MKBHD for planting the idea of having plastic body in smartphones as disgusting. One of most beloved phone ever, Lumia 920 has polycarbonate body and built like a tank. I'm also don't give a shit about wireless charging btw.

almost all smartphones are exempt, maybe some <100€ chinkphones will need to be changed
now almost all phones have enough battery cycles or are water/dust sealed to be exempt
>>
>>109625567
And they decided to make the Pro version lack an audiojack, so I had to get the even shittier version.
It runs well though, no complaints besides the absolute bloat that consumes the battery within two days with any type of use.
I played games on it, can't run all of them at max settings, but the hardware compares to Samsung S6 or S7 in performance, I guess.
>inb4 jeet
I wanted a reputable brand phone with a detachable battery since I go in the middle of nowhere quite a lot and 2 days of battery no matter the usage isn't a lot, and I want my ATAK to work. I bought a custom phone holder, similar to those Tactical XCover 6 marketing pictures, I paid slightly more than the phone itself lmao, I fucking hate military price gouging, but it is what it is. It was cheaper to buy new than to make myself, so I guess we can roll with it.
>>
>>109625856
Since Samsung made the XCover series, I guess there are solid arguments that every IP68 must have detachable batteries as it is technically viable.
>>
>>109625809
...And absolute dogshit performance even by 2015 standard.
I don't miss that one bit.
>>
>>109625901
Smartphone companies just need to get better at marketing. Like car companies calling vinyl seats "vegan leather"
>>
>>109625985
>but but i need to play gerkins infact on my phone!!!

gadgetgoy
>>
>>109625790
the switch 2 wasn't waterproof in the first place
>>
>>109625985
I had no complaints with the performance although it was definitely faster on LineageOS without Samsung's bloatware UI
