what makes arm so much better than x86?>inb4 it's notthen why did apple make apple silicon using arm, and why are a bunch of laptop manufacturers switching to snapdragon processors despite terrible app and driver support?
Literally nobody bought snapdragon laptops.
>>109631787well x86 windows suckarm windows suckthe issue is windows here.snapdragon elite x2 elite has good performanceweak gpu though compare to like silicone max variant 40core one.
It's notBecause they're stupid
The ISA is basically a frontend in the big 2026. AArch64 being less nuts helps in some ways and probably reduces some real estate on the chips (lower energy cost) especially when you realize how completely insane x86 instruction encoding is.
>>109631859I mean, out of the gate, you got more registers and less nutty instruction encoding. You also don't have to be beholden to total store order either, like x86 so you have more room to reorder instructions that aren't explicitly ordered by some mechanism.
>>109631787>>then why did apple make apple silicon using armBecause they can license ARM but not x86.> and why are a bunch of laptop manufacturers switching to snapdragon processors despite terrible app and driver support?Cause its cheaper than buying x86 chips

>>109631787>then why did apple make apple silicon using armThey were already making the best Arm SoCs for phones. They have a god license for Arm.Intel were shitting the bed, just like IBM did in the past.Perfect time to vertically integrate PC-grade SoCs.

modern x86 is risc under the hood. sorry to disappoint!

>>109632217i've heard that modern x86 are all risc processors pretending to be cisc ones.

>>109632301100% fake numbers in that image
>>109632518They decode instructions into micro ops, that isn't quite RISC, it's lower level and partially software-defined through microcode.>>109632637Feel free to show the real ones. Make sure to include the "extensions" and "optional" sets that every arm platform includes to actually be useful.
>>109632682You posted absolute fabricated numbers.

>>109632786you're talking about your curryjeet ARMshit that needs 4x the electricity to perform the same task
>>109632786>so are they just glorified emulators? No you dip, the instruction set is just the interface. You can't expose micro ops to user software or you'd have to compile a different version of every software for every CPU family.
>>109631787I will admit, yes arm is good at certain thingsWhat is meant by good here is Snapdragon, Raspberry Pinot mediatek, some arm based macbooks can only be installed asahi linux, other than that the support is locked
>>109631787There is nothing remotely "reduced" about a modern ARM cpu. Modern ARM is CISC
>>109631787ARM is more CISC these days anyways, they have specific instructions for accelerating javascript, which literally break down into macro operations for execution
>>109631787>what makes arm so much better than x86?Jim Keller says its not, that the instruction fetching/translation adds minimal power consumption and that the focus of x86 has always been performance. I'll believe him over anything posted ITT

low power with high performance is the future
>>109631787apple succeeds because they can tune the OS for the hardware they have a lot more control over how software leverages the platform. Compare with microsoft which is a completely shitshow because every time they try it they fuck it up and no one believes in them. Same problem qualcomm faces. x86 vs arm doesn't matter Apple would this be better than Intel and co. simply because they control the platform.
